The drive to Jonathan’s parent’s house took three quarters of an hour. The drove through the gates and along the long gravel path until she saw the house that was built on a hill over looking a stream there was at least 20 acres of land that surrounded the New England styled property.

Jonathan opened the door for Mavis; his parents came out to greet them as Jonathan carried Mavis’s case into the house.

“Hello Mavis; Angela Carrington, pleased to meet you; this is my husband Edward.

Please come in I bet you could use a drink after your journey.

Angela Carrington was bedecked in diamonds and wore a yellow all in one trouser suit with white court shoes. Edward wore a tweed suit and brown brogues.

In only five seconds she knew who wore the trousers in this household.

The house was very impressive with oil paintings from Monet and Seurat.

The staircase lead up to five rooms; that all had their own bath, shower, and toilets.

There was a huge drawing room a study and a dining room. The kitchen had every gadget known to man. They had eight servants and three chefs who cooked to Michelin standard. There was also a butler who came in with a tray of drinks.

“You have a lovely home here Angela.”

“Thank you dear, and where do you live?

“I have a meagre apartment on 5th Avenue it has five bedrooms where my parents live too.

Mavis took a sip of the cocktail that had been made for her after Jonathan had informed his mother what she liked.

“Jonathan tells me you came from England five years ago where in England were you brought up dear; anywhere near London?

“No Angela, I was brought up in North Shields the biggest herring port in the world.” “That is where I worked until I emigrated.”

“So you were a fish woman?

“Yes, I was; does that surprise you.

Both Edward and Angela; said no, no, dear. We are only interested in your background I do hope you don’t think that we are prying.

Jonathan came to her rescue; when he said come Mavis I will show you to your room.

“Please excuse me said Mavis as she got up from the sofa she was sitting on and followed Jonathan to the bedrooms.

When Jonathan showed her the room he spoke: I’m sorry for the way my mother has spoken Mavis.”

“It’s alright; I was expecting it. “ Your mother is just being protective.

“She will warm to you I’m sure.” Remember you are not on trial here.”

“Am I not; it certainly feels that way.

I will leave you to change for dinner.

Jonathan smiled then gave her a wink before turning and leaving the room.
