Someone was playing the piano in the Jungle bar as the customers all joined in with “Roll out the Barrel.” Tug was in fine voice after five pints of Newcastle Brown Ale the girls sang along with him until the song was finished and everyone clapped.

Bill and Tug left with the girls around eleven thirty where they spent the night in Janice’s house.

In the morning the two lads ate breakfast made by Janice before leaving. Bill and Tug left ten guineas each on the table before they left. Both Bill and Tug worked in “Smiths Dock Ship Repair Yard” as painters during the day. If they worked of an evening they earned more money but Tug was happy just doing the odd shift which left him time to train at the gym called “The Bloodkit” across the road from Christ Church with his mate Bill.

Many good fighters trained there when they went Manny Burgo, a good looking Heavyweight was fast becoming a force to be reckoned with. His fast hand speed and his slick footwork; it had earned him twenty victories in 22 fights with two draws so far and he was looking to fight Jim Cooper from London in a British title illumination bout. Then there was Stan Hawthorn who had fought the great Dave Charnley for the British title as well as his team mate Johnny Miller. They both were beaten by Charnley but gave good accounts of themselves.

A regular visitor to the gym was “Seaman Tommy Watson who was a great fighter and had gone over to America to fight World Champion Kid Chocolate and only got beat by a split decision. A lot of people said after the fight that had it been anywhere else, Watson would have got it.

Bill clocked in at the gate at seven fifteen with his friend and they made there way down the bank into the yard. They found their lockers and put on their overalls and safety riggers boots before heading towards the” Lunar passage” a large oil tanker that had come in for a refit and repaint. Both men climbed up the scaffolding and picked up their spray guns. They pulled the masks over their nose and mouth put on a safety hard hat and began working.
