Sarah opened the door to her apartment on 22nd Street it was huge inside, it was tastefully decorated in a modern style of the 1940’s unlike the furniture at home.

There was a gramophone that played records which her aunt enjoyed and a radio.

Her room looked out onto the street below where she could watch the people come and go. There were fans in all of the rooms because the temperature was far hotter here than back home too.

The bathroom had a free standing bath and shower with all the latest gadgets for drying your hair. There was an array of bath salts, soaps, bubble bath, and hair products.

There was also a medicine cabinet with just about every remedy for every eventuality inside.

In her room was a chest of draws with a large mirror and a chair all in mahogany so that she could do her hair in her room there was a double wardrobe to put all her clothes and space inside for shoes. All the floors were polished wood and the kitchen was the biggest she had ever seen all with modern appliances like a toaster, gas oven; and a coffee percolator that was permanently on so that coffee could be drank throughout the day.

“Well how do you like the place Mavis? Said her aunt as she lit up a cigarette and blew out the smoke.”

“She looked at Mavis and said sorry dear it’s a nasty habit don’t ever start.”

“There is some fresh orange in the ice box in the kitchen and cold ham if you would like a sandwich. ‘ Just make yourself at home here.”

I love it here already Sarah, I cannot wait to try the big bath and shower.

“Yeah; that’s what I liked too when I came here.

“Now tomorrow I will take you down town you will have to put on your new things as I am going to get you a job at the local library I was telling you about. The wage isn’t great but it’s better than gutting herring all day right?

“Yes it is.”

“There will be plenty of opportunities for you to go to college and learn here Mavis; so I am going to enrol you in the night school too where you can pick up valuable skills.

Women in this country are as valuable as the men in the work place.

“Now I would go have yourself a nap as the time difference here will catch up with you.

“I am tired a little; it’s been a long day.
