24. 24

Mollie came over to the table and asked for a drink Ruth excused herself then went over to the kitchen where there were plastic cups and poured Mollie a drink of orange.

Here Mollie said Ruth as she sat Mollie in one of the seats then gave her the drink.

“What do you say now Mollie.

“Thank you she replied.”

“Well done Mollie said Ruth; she is learning fast, I only started teaching her manners yesterday and she’s picked it up already.”

“That’s marvellous, it means she can learn. I will have to tell Greg when I get back.”

“Is Greg her father?

“Yes he is.”

Mollie finished the orange and Ruth asked if she needed the toilet. Mollie nodded.

“The toilets are across the hall on your right Ruth.

“Thanks Lynn, I won’t be a minute.”

After Mollie had gone to the toilet she ran to play with the other kids who were going up a mini slide.

“Are you married then Ruth?

“No, are you?

“I was, my husband was killed in Normandy.”

“I’m Sorry Lynn.”

“I’m over it now and can talk about it; it’s been almost six years now. I get a small pension from the M.O.D but I work part time in a shoe shop on Saville Street.

The job doesn’t pay much but there’s only me see.”

“Do you not have any children of your own Lynn?

“I had two miscarriages and they gave me a hysterectomy; these are my children now.

“I hope to have children one day.”

“You are young Ruth enjoy yourself a little first.”

“Yes, I am only twenty five.”

“Just a slip of a lass, you are very attractive so you will be fighting them off are you?

Ruth laughed then went on to tell her about the relationship she had just come out of.

“Some men a just wicked to the core; I haven’t found one as good as Jimmy; that’s why I’m still single.

“Do you get out much?

“No not really; I liked going to the Gourmont to see a film with Jimmy when he was on leave.”

Have you seen “Brief Encounter” with Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard?

 “No I haven’t.”

“Oh it’s a wonderful story by David Lean about a married woman called Laura who’s life becomes complicated when she meets Alec at a railway station’

“It sounds very romantic.”

“It is.” Do you know it was based on a play written by Noel Coward?

“I didn’t know that either but I will certainly look out for the book Lynn.

Ruth looked at her watch; I must go I have to get back to cook a meal for Greg and Mollie but I will come again.”
