“There’s a widow woman I know Mavis; she may be able to help you can you stay here whilst I go and fetch her. Isabella got out of her seat then told Mavis that she wouldn’t be long.

Bill Peters limbered up as he prepared to fight Butch Whitelaw a big hulk of a man weighing over two hundred and fifty pounds.

This was Billy’s twelfth prize fight he was now earning twenty guineas a fight organised by Norman Fawcett who’s own son Billy “Tug Fawcett was fighting today also.

The crowd were baying for blood as the two men sized each other up. Money was exchanging hands as bets were taken on who was going to win.

Bill Peters lay down a side bet of sixty guineas that he would knock out the big man in less than three rounds.

Bill Peters was the first to strike; with a solid left jab to the nose of Butch Whitelaw. The sound of broken bone could be heard as the big fists of Bill Peters crashed against the side of the big mans face. Blood was oozing from Butch as he tried to fight back but Bill was too quick for him and buried a left hook into the rib cage of his opponent.

The pain registered on the big mans face as he grabbed hold of Bill and head butted him. Bill stumbled back then raised his hand to his eye and felt blood he set himself as Butch who saw the blood rushed in to finish Bill off.

Bill moved to his right then threw another left hook to his ribs then doubled it up to his chin. The big man fell in a crumbled heap on the ground and didn’t move.

Billy’s hand was raised and he went to collect his money. After paying Norman his expenses he was left with Fifteen guineas but his side bet paid out at 4-1 so he was pretty pleased with himself as he stood back to watch light weight Bill “Tug Fawcett Knock out “Scrapper Williams from South Shields in two rounds.

The two men walked away and took the ferry back across to North Shields and headed for the “Jungle bar where they knew the ladies of the night would be touting for business.

Tug Fawcett went to the bar and ordered two bottles of Newcastle Brown Ale as his friend found them a seat.

Bill didn’t feel very attractive with a big sticking plaster across his left eye but thought what the hell as he took the bottle from Tug who sat next to him.

They were discussing their bouts when to ladies came across.

Hello Bill, hi Tug; said Teresa, you two been fighting again then?

No need to ask if you’ve won then?

“Buying us a drink then? ‘ You know Janice don’t you Tug?

“Hello Janice; come and sit with us.”

Hi tug; did you win today?

Yes, I knocked him out in the second round.”

Bill Peters returned with to port and lemons for the girls. They thanked Bill then moved closer to the two men.
