Elizabeth packed a small bag with clean clothes and toiletries. She went into the kitchen where she wrapped up a fresh loaf, a bottle of milk, some cheese, and ham, bacon, egg’s, some mushrooms, and fresh tomatoes. There was half a steak and kidney pie left from her dinner. So that went into the bag along with carrots potatoes and a tin of peas. She kissed her Gran before leaving.

She sped along the roads at fifty miles an hour so she could get to Gerald’s house faster.

She wasn’t worried in case there was police car waiting on the highway ready to arrest speeding drivers. She was wearing a seat belt in the new car she had bought. It was a Vauxhall Viva. The new car had four doors and a boot in which to store luggage. It was cherry red with a sun roof which opened to allow air in during the hot summer months.

It was just after six fifteen on that cold Friday evening that Elizabeth arrived at Gerald’s house. When he answered the door Elizabeth got a shock.

“My God Gerald what have you done to yourself.”

“Do I really look that bad?

“Worse, Gerald you could of died; look at you you’re a bag of bones. Come on I’m going to cook you a meal. I’ve brought bread, milk, and a steak and kidney pie.

“Lovey pet, but I don’t think my stomach could take a big meal right now. I’ve been living on home made soup.”

Ged went on o tell her about the pickets the riots and the women who fed them and gave them blankets so they could sleep and keep warm.

Elizabeth heated the pie in the oven but did not make any vegetables when it was ready she popped on the kettle to make Ged some tea she cut half of the pie and Placed it onto a plate then handed it to Gerald.

“Thanks; what would I do without you?

Ged ate the pie and was pretty full after it. He managed a few sips before his eyes started dropping.

“Come on its bed for you Mr Hopkins.

“I could sleep for a week; said Ged yarning.

Taking off his clothes he slid under the covers and was asleep in less than ten minutes.

Elizabeth tidied away went to the bathroom and cleaned her teeth before getting inside the bed with Gerald. She didn’t have a stitch of clothing on. She wanted to feel Gerald’s body next to hers; she threw arm around him and rested her head on his chest. It was good just to hear him breathing. It wasn’t long before she nodded off herself.
