Elizabeth Phelps sat in the courtroom as Judge Jason Sowersby read out the decree absolute.

“Ms Phelps you have been wronged by your ex husband Albert Phelps This is what I propose to right that wrong.

Mr Phelps will be made to pay you annual maintainenence of £2520 pounds; you will also receive half of all his assets including the boat named as “The Misty Dawn.

The property that you now live in shall be yours until such times that all the children leave that premises then the house must be sold and the equity from that sale shared between you and your ex husband.

“That is the judgement of this court case dismissed.”

Albert Phelps appealed the courts ruling on the boat as he stated that it was taking away his livelihood and that of his crew. The court agreed but instead they told Mr Phelps that he must pay his ex wife the sum of £4.000 per annum until half the value of the boat was paid.

Albert Phelps moved to Spitsbergen with Inga where they were married in a simple ceremony.

Liz met Simon Smith in 1962. The man who had given the boys a fishing rod each they started seeing each other after Liz had a burst water pipe in her bathroom.

Simon was a plumber by trade and kindly fixed it for her. Simon wasn’t married but had his own house in Jesmond left to him by his parents.

Liz moved in with Simon with the three boys and the house on Bedford Street sold.

The court awarded her the £26.000 because of non payment of Maintainenence.

She started her own business in Jesmond called “In Style” where her friends from Bedford Street come to get their hair done and have a chat. Liz learned to drive, bought her own Ford Cortina, she and Simon are very happy together; they planned to marry in June that year. Simon takes the boys fishing when Billy isn’t training or playing.

Carl Allen and Doreen Laws Hart were married four years after meeting at that Christmas party. They sold their houses and now live in Darras Hall together.

Carl takes Doreen to France every summer where they spend time visiting vine yards and sampling French food.
