Billy came home from school with his kit bag, where he told his mother that Mr Tucker wanted him to play football for the school. Look said Billy; he gave me a football strip, a pair of football boots, and a shower towel as well.

“That’s good Billy give me them here; I will wash them for you and get them dry for you.

“Thanks mam.”

“I have made “Toad in the Hole for your tea’s; I’m going to do Florence’s hair tonight so I will be about an hour or so. Just put the telly on and sit and watch until I come back.

The three brothers sat at the table in the scullery as their mother put out their tea. She gave Billy an extra sausage and more mashed potato because he was growing so fast he was nearly as tall as her; he would be eight next week she thought. Her children were no longer babies anymore. Where had the years gone it was like the world was spinning faster and faster where the years were as short as a day?

Will you boys be alright then because I’ve got to go?

Lizzy put the football strip into the twin tub along with the blue towel empties the last of the Daz washing powder into the wash then switched it on.

“Yes Mam don’t worry I will watch them for you.”

She stroked Billy’s head then put on her coat picked up her bag with her scissors, blow drier head bag, dyes, and curlers then headed out.

Billy finished his meal first so he filled up the sink with hot water and squeezed some fairy liquid into it.

He washed the plate that he was using and the pans that his mother had made to make their tea. When Alan and John were finished he washed theirs too along with the cups they had used as well.

They all sat on the sofa near the television as Billy switched it on “Wagon Train was on with Clint Eastwood as Rowdy Yeats so they settled down to watch.
