Tony Asiamah put down three nines, and then his brother put down three tens.

“That beats me said Albert. Then Ralphie Mason put down three Jacks; Beat that!

“Don’t crow too soon said Alvin as he lay down three Kings.

Alvin picked up the money; he left a pound in the pot for the next game.

Go on then Mick; get the drinks in with this said Alvin. He shoved a five pound note in his hand. Get yourself a bag of nuts for going.

“Just wait until the night is over and I’ve taken fifty quid off you.

He got up from his stool and went to the bar where Doreen Wyness was serving.

“Hey Doreen give us another round would you and can I have a packet of those salted nuts as well.

Okay Mick hold on a second.

She went under the counter and pulled seven bottles of Newcastle Brown Ale from the fridge then pulled a pint of lager.

Mick gave her the blue five pound note she rang the price into the till then gave Mick his change.

He came back and sat down then picked up his cards and with a wry smile he placed his pound stake after giving Alvin Willis his change.

The game of cards lasted long until after closing. The drinks were still flowing during “The Lock In” the money changed hands from person to person as games were won and lost. It was three in the morning when Albert walked out of the Pan Shop Club seventy pounds less than he had come with.

He said good bye to his crew and said he would see Alvin later that morning down on the quay.

Albert tried to sober himself up by walking home but it seemed to take ages. The road looked very long indeed but eventually he found his way home and opened the gate and struggled to open the front door with the key.

He took off his coat then his shoes as quietly as he could he went into the fridge and took out some ham then searched for a tomato and some lettuce.

He made the sandwich in the scullery then pulled out a chair that screeched across the wooden floor. Albert put his finger to his lips in mock silence then sat down.

He ate the sandwich nosily then tried to sneak up stairs to bed but took the wrong a turn and ended up on the sofa where he fell asleep.
