Keith nearly choked on his pint as he stammered y’yes; we did; didn’t we Tom?

“Yes; it’s a good job I was there to help.”

“So where was the suite coming from Keith again I forgot?

“I told you love; it was from his mother’s house.”

Margaret knew Tom and she knew when he was lying and he was lying now.

“So where is Sandra now?

Oh; she left to go back to Huddersfield this morning; she’s a teacher.”

“I bet she is.”

“So did she teach you anything then Tom?

“I don’t know what you mean love; look there’s nothing going on here Margaret; we only talked about our day’s in school that is all.”

Margaret finished her drink then stood up and put her coat on; then picked up her bag.

“Where are you going?

“I’m going home Tom; but do stay with your friends. Don’t come to my bed tonight

“Margaret; listen to me?

Margaret had gone; Tom thanked Alice for dropping him in then went after his wife.

He saw her fifty yards up the road; he ran after her then when he caught her up he took hold of her arm until she stopped.

“Margaret you have got to believe me that nothing happened between Sandie and me.”

“Sandie is it said Margaret as she walked further on.”

“We all called her Sandie at school; I’ve never called her Sandra ever.”

“Look Margaret; I know we haven’t been getting on lately; I love you and wouldn’t do anything to hurt you.”

“Margaret knew he meant what he said.”

She opened the gate to the house and was about to open the door to the house when Tom took hold of his wife; he kissed her tenderly; I love you Margaret Johansson.”

They went inside and into the bedroom and closed the door.

Even though she was in pain she let Tom make love to her; when it was over Tom lit up a cigarette and blew out a satisfied cloud of smoke.

Margaret lay awake all night thinking about what the doctor was going to say. She nearly told Tom when he grabbed her breast and she winced in pain.

She thought about what would happen to Tom and Georgie if she was no longer around. She thought that she would have to make plans in case the worst was to happen. The dawn began to break through the window so Margaret got out of bed to use the toilet. Then she put on her bathrobe and went into the scullery and put on the kettle.
