Riding home from work at the Battle Hill Colliery in Wallsend a young lad hears what he thinks is a woman in distress- He parks his bike and runs down an an embankment where he discovers it is not a woman but a sack that has been thrown into a sewer. upon opening the bag he discovers that it is in fact a little staffordshire bull terrier pup. He places the pup into his bait bag and takes it home to his mother where they live in a miner's cottage in Cullercoats. If you love animals you will love this story.

52. Kilo Chapter 52

When the court resumed Susan Doherty was reminded that she still was under oath as she was cross examined by Sir Gordon Sime.
He was ruthless in his questioning and trying to make out that Susan was indeed telling a pack of lies. But Susan Doherty then dropped the bombshell when she told the jury that Edward Rochdale had raped her also in his study two month previous to him raping Miss Martha Stephenson. It was then that Sir Jeffery walked out of the court and never came back.
 The Judge had to quieten the gallery down again.
 The jury retired and it took them less than forty minutes to find Edward Rochdale guilty of rape on two counts.
In sentencing Edward Rochdale to eight years imprisonment judge Sarin said that he had tarnished the name of the Rochdale family forever.
“Take him down.”
It is the will of this court that the child known as Tilly Rochdale stay at the Reamer house hold until such time that it is possible for the child to be adopted legally.
“Case dismissed.
Kate hugged jack and Jack hugged his mother.
Jack shook the hand of Alan Bertram; picked up Tilly in his arms and kissed her on the cheek.

It was later that week that it was reported that Sir Jeffery Rochdale had blown his brains out with a Purdy shotgun because he couldn’t live with the shame that his son had brought upon the family.
Edward Rochdale served two years in Durham jail before hanging himself with a bed sheet tied to a cell door. The inmates discovered his sordid past and he himself became a victim to rape by other prisoners.
 Hartford Manor became the property of Tilly Stephenson Reamer who changed her name by deed pole on her 21st birthday. She sold the property and married a farm owner and had three children. She went on to college where she became a teacher in a village in Preston.
Jack taught her to drive and she bought herself a Ford Cortina so that she was able to visit when she was on holiday.
Nelly Reamer lived until she was seventy two years of age when she died peacefully in her sleep she was buried along side Martha Elizabeth Stephens in Whitley Bay cemetery.
Jack and Kate had two children; his son Tom started working as an engineer at the Shotton Colliery when it was left to Jack in George Shotton’s will. His Daughter Mary Kate studied at Oxford and became a vetinary surgeon working with Nigel in his practice until he retired in 1978. He still lives with Gino in the house his parent brought him up in.
As for Kilo he lived to the grand old age of seventeen, fathered twenty four puppies of which both Mary Kate and Tilly kept one each.
