19. Kilo Chapter 19

“Kate thought for a while then laughed and accepted.
You can start tomorrow.
I have already started Jack, I will stay until I’m finished then that will be my first day.
Kate made Jack his tea then gave him some of her bread and scones to try with rhubarb jam that she made from the remainder of the rhubarb from the tart.
Unlike Martha, Kate had red hair, blue eyes she was very slim and pretty.
Your father was from Ireland Katie is that right?
Yes, we moved from Belfast about fourteen years back.
“I thought there was a hint of the Irish accent in your voice.
“Good old protestant girl I am.”
Nelly could see that they were all going to get along just fine so she got up from the table and went to feed Tilly her bottle.
“Would you like me to do that Nelly?
“It’s alright Kate you’ve never stopped since you got here. This isn’t the work house you know. Jack chatted away to Kate for a good half hour before Kilo started whining. “Oh what a lovely looking dog where did you get him?
Look put on your coat and you can come with us and I will tell you all about it.
 What about my chores?
“First rule of the house, Jack mimicked an Irish accent; don’t be arguing with the gaffer.
Kate got up then went down the passage then picked up her coat and hat.
Jack put on a cap and an overcoat because it was getting colder out there.
“Not be long mam, just taking Kilo out.
He slipped the lead over the dog’s head then let Kate out first. The condensation from their breathes told the story of how cold it was. They crossed the road onto the prom and headed towards Tynemouth. Jack found it so easy to talk with Katie. He told her how he’d found the dog and why it was called Kilo.
“A very cute name for a dog, Jack.”

Kilo rolled about on the frosty grass as jack threw a ball down the links.
By the time they realised it they had walked down to Tynemouth Priory Castle.
Better head back said Jack
