18. Kilo Chapter 18

Nelly prepared the ingredients needed for the making the bread for that day. She had made a list of the duties that the house maid would have to do throughout the week.
There was a gentle knock on the door at 8.45am. Kilo barked then went to the door
Nelly reached the door then opened it.
Mrs Reamer, hello, I’m Katie Berry from over the road. I have been asked to call because your son would like me to start work.
“Come in Kate, here give me your coat and hat I will show you where to hang them up.”
 “Thank you Mrs Reamer.”
“Please call me Nelly.”
“Oh thank you, where would you like me to start?
“Well can you bake bread?
“Yes, well I will watch how you make it and if I see you going wrong I will tell you okay?
“Yes alright.”
There was little cause for concern as this girl knew her way around a kitchen and was very competent in cooking a variety of meals.
She prepared a pan haggerty with crispy corner puddings and some apple crumble for afters. The kitchen was cleaned then scones some shortbread biscuits and a rhubarb tart were made. Kate had been given the rhubarb from her father’s allotment.
My father grows an assortment of vegetables which he sells cheaper than the market Nelly.
Any shopping you need I will get after I finish work so do not worry.
“How about a nice cup of tea Nelly?
“That would be nice.”
Nelly showed Kate where the cups were kept.
Whilst making the tea Kate also prepared a bottle for Tilly and left it to cool.
“I’m going to be totally redundant Kate.”
“The washing we will do together Nelly that will make the job easier. I do it with my mother and it’s done in no time.”
“So what time does Jack get up?
“You know Jack do you?
“Yes, all the girls talk about Jack.” In a nice way mind you.”
“Do you know he has new had a day off from work due to sickness in over eleven years?”
“He will make someone a good man my mother says.”
“Are my ears burning said Jack as he popped his head round the scullery door?
“Kate’s face turned scarlet as she apologised.
“How is she doing then mam? Do we keep her or what?
“Jack she is very good, wait until you see what’s for dinner.
“Would you like some tea Mr Reamer?
“Mr is it, Katie you know me, call me Jack, and I take milk and three sugars he said with a wink.
“Now the wage is four pounds a week. Is that fair?
