11. Kilo Chapter 11

As the summer ended the leaves from the trees turned yellow and red before finally dropping to the ground the wind started picking up and the seas became choppier as Martha and Nelly walked Kilo across the beach each morning to allow Jack to sleep.
Martha was waddling along and had to keep stopping every hundred yards or so to get her breath back.
“Are you alright Martha?
“Yes just give me a moment will you.”
Several minutes past before Martha got up and carried on walking back to the cottage.
Once inside Nelly got her a chair to sit on.
“Sit yourself down dear and I will make you a cup of tea.
Nelly filled the kettle and placed it on the range. Nelly shovelled more coal on the fire then spooned tea into the pot from the caddy. She thought she must remember to buy some tea the next time they went shopping together. Looking over at Martha she didn’t look well at all. Her face had lost its usual colour. She was panting as well which wasn’t good.
Jack got up as the tea was being poured and his mother nodded in Martha’s direction.
Jack looked at her then said come on you’re going to have a lie down.
He gently picked her up then carried her to her bed.
After he laid her down she dropped off to sleep. By five o’clock she was no better. Then there was a scream from the bedroom Jack ran in first followed by his mother. “Can I talk to her son?
“What about?
“Women’s things.”
“Oh I see.”
Jack left the room and his mother closed the door. Thirty seconds later his mother came out and told jack to fetch Dr Booth.
Jack jumped on his bike and rode like hell up Mariners Avenue then turned left down the street until he came to Dr Booth’s surgery. Not waiting in the queue he rushed to the front to speak to the receptionist who quickly got up then went into the Doctors office.
One minute later the Doctor came out and told Jack to get into the car but he didn’t want to leave his bike as he would need it for work. Look you go Doctor. I will see you there.

It took less than five minutes for Dr Booth to reach the cottage where his mother led the doctor into the bedroom and closed the door. Jack got there four minutes after and was pacing the floor outside the bedroom.
It was a good twenty minutes before both the Doctor and his mother emerged from the room.
“What’s going on mam?
“Martha is in labour but there are complications Jack.
