Saying Nothing is Saying 'Okay'

I wrote this poem a while ago for a competiton about bullying. Although it didn't win, the support was amazing and it was what inspired me to continue writing poetry. Since we're allowed to enter poems that we wrote a while ago, and bullying is something I feel very passionately about, I've decided to enter this too :)

1. The Bystander

They bullied the boy with glasses

Broke the lenses

He couldn’t see during classes.

I did nothing,

But it was okay:

I wore contacts.

They bullied the girl with ginger hair

Called her ‘blood-head’

Bruised her face, beat in fear.

I did nothing,

But it was okay:

I was a brunette.

They bullied the boy who was overweight

Sliced his stomach

Left him in a traumatised state.

I did nothing,

But it was okay:

I was thin.

They bullied the boy who was black

Burnt his skin

He wheezed on the floor; panic attack.

I did nothing,

But it was okay:

I was white.

They bullied the girl who was disabled

Yanked from her wheelchair

Left sobbing on the concrete, emotionally unstable.

I did nothing,

But it was okay:

I was able-bodied.

They bullied the boy who was Jewish

Declared him a rat

Yelled he was just filthy sewage.

I did nothing,

But it was okay:

I was an atheist.

They bullied the girl who was gay

Labelled her queer

Scratched and spat at her all day.

I did nothing,

But it was okay:

I was straight.

Then they bullied the cowardly child

Said he was weak

Smashed up his face, and smiled.

But I did nothing:

There was nothing I could do.

I was being bullied, too.
