Darkest of Days

Darkest of Days is a story about three high school students from a small town who gain superpowers after a meteor shower. Andrew, Drake, and Kyle were just normal foster children who were outcast by the public until one night on which a meteor shower occurred. When they came in contact with a meteor that landed not far from their foster home, they adopted superhuman abilities. With their new found powers they run away from home to live out their dreams together. However, will the power go to their head, or can they control it and live together happily as friends? Follow as Andrew tells the tale from his perspective, a tale of friendship and loyalty, lust and love, and power and triumph.

2. Celest

IKyle and I waited in the high school courtyard for Drake. Our fear for his life grew every minute he didn't come out. It was now an hour after school and the clubs just got out. Kyle and I scanned the crowd for Drake, with each person passing by, I get even more frightened. Was me being a hopeless, scrawny, pussy the cause of this, of him getting in trouble for protecting me. I scanned the crowd again to clear my mind.

"Andrew, I found him!" called Kyle pointing at his splitting image pushing through a small crowd of kids, some flipping him off for it.

"Fuck him," called Drake as we approached him, "They get detention and I'm suspended!"

"What the fuck? They could have killed him, and they only get detention?" Kyle flung his arm towards study hall hitting a girl in the back of the head, "Sorry."

They turned around to respond with eye rolls and curses underneath their breath. I snickered back already annoyed from the day. Turning around I started to question Drake about his office trouble when I was suddenly interrupted by the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. Across the street stood the girl who I have crushed on since the day I began attending Wheaten High. She was a stunning young woman with strawberry blonde hair and bright hazel blue eyes. Her face was round but slender and was dotted almost perfectly and evenly with freckles. Her smile lit up the world and brought joy to everyone who saw, she was an angel sent from heaven, or maybe a demon since I lust for her. My trance was soon interrupted by a sharp stinging pain that struck the back of my head.

"What the hell man, get ahold of yourself, we gotta get back to the home!" yelled Drake grabbing my arm and dragging me down the road.

The girl smiled at me, waving shyly, I attempted to return the gesture but was unable to see if she saw, she was soon swarmed by a group of girls who always swooned and stalked the soccer jocks. She disappeared from sight.

The damp wooden attic seemed a lot less gloomy when I see her during the day. she seems to brighten up my mood, make me forget about Elga, our caretaker. She was sleeping, like usual when we aren't home, as the only three foster kids in the home, and being in the same grade, she could care less about anyone else who wants to stop by. We have one solitary year in her custody and then we are adults, free to do whatever we please.

Kyle ascended the ladder to the attic hideout with a tray of "forbidden snacks" reserved only for Elga.

"He still ogling over Celest?" Kyle asked Drake placing the platter on a wood box and sitting on a lawn chair. The single light flickered as the glow shining in from the flower patterned stain glass window dimmed.

"Yeah, he's been like this for a while," Drake responded. Hearing that, I threw a moldy pillow at him, hitting Drake right in the face. We all laughed.

The attic was a great place for us, it was where we could just be ourselves and relax with one another. The attic was our oasis.

Kyle unlocked his Ipod and typed quickly.

"Oh yeah, there's a meteor shower tonight!" he squealed showing us a picture from a satellite taken a week before.

"I call the shooting star!" snapped Drake jokingly running for the flower window, flipping it up to peer out.

"That's not how it works," I called to him, "you call it when you see it!" He waited a second staring out of the window, I began to crawl over when I saw one.

"Call it!" yelled Drake almost instantly.

Kyle and I squeezed in next to Drake gazing at the fireballs whizzing by the dark blue sky.

"They're really close!" Kyle squeaked nervously

"Wouldn't it be cool if one would land right here?" I asked them

"That could be catastrophic, it could be the end of humanity in this hemisphere if big enough!" Kyle cried horrified. Drake's eyes opened signalling that his wish was over and noticing that Kyle didn't see, I called it.

I closed my eyes tight wishing with all my heart.

"There are so many things I could wish for in this world," I thought to the shooting star, "but at the moment, the only thing that I would want to wish for, love. If I could get a sign showing me if I was meant to love and be loved, and who would love me. Hopefully it's Celest, she's nice and beautiful, and I wish I knew her better." I opened my eyes and nodded to Kyle who called one and started wishing. when he finished we all watched the sky again.

"Andrew," Drake started, "what's your wish?" Before I could answer, Kyle butted in.

"Telling a wish will prevent it from coming true!" he frantically whined

"Not when you're close friends!" Drake returned then looked to me, "What did you wish for?"

"I wished," I hesitated, "I wished for the power to find out if I was meant to love and be loved. You know since I never had the experience of love like you guys." They nodded in approval

"Kyle?" Drake asked

"Freedom," Kyle blurted after a long pause, " I wished for our freedom from this Wheaten hell!" We nodded again

"What about you Drake?" I questioned

"Yeah!" Kyle added

Drake paused for a moment, still not looking to us.

"I wanted all of our dreams and wishes to come true, and I wanted us to never drift apart." he then turned to us, and we smiled at him.

It was at that time that the attic turned a tint of read, and a heat hit our backs. We all snapped back to the window to see what was the matter.
