Every Other Weekend (Payzer/Sophiam)

Ali and Rachel Payne are devastated when their parents, Liam and Danielle split, and are suspicious about their dad's new girlfriend, Sophia.

17. We Need To Talk

I put on a purple and black flannel over my black undershirt, pairing it with navy blue skinny jeans and black converse. I brush through my hair, and use a donut to shape a nice bun. James should be here any minute, and I'm excited.

My dad's suspicious about James and I, but he trusts my judgement and that I'll make good decisions.

Never the less, he wants to meet James and like your typical protective father, he'll want to interrogate him, and probably embarrass me. I just hope it won't change James's mind about me.

Liam's POV

I tap my fingers impatiently against the kitchen table as I wait for this 'James' character. Ali's been texting him, and today, she's going out with him to Central Park. I trust Ali 100% to make good decisions. She's my daughter, and she hasn't given me a reason not to trust her. I just don't trust James.

After what seems like ages, there's a knock at the door. I waste no time in answering it. The brunette boy standing on my porch when I open the door wears a grey hoodie and jeans, with black Jordans.

"Hi, I'm-"

"James. I know. Come in." I open the door enough so he can come in, before closing it. "Sit down."

He does so, and I tilt my head, squinting slightly at him.

"Do you do drugs?"

"No sir," he shakes his head, looking slightly taken back by the question.

"How are your grades?"

"A's and B's."

I can tell he's nervous, so I fake a smile.

"Relax. I'm just trying to get to know my daughter's new friend."

"Okay," he bites his lip.

"Have you ever cheated on a girl before?"

"No, I would never, and I'm actually-"

"What are your intentions when you take my daughter out tonight? Where are you going?"

"Just for a walk around Central Park, I just wanted to hang out, get to know her better."

"Okay." I stand up. "If you ever hurt my little girl, you will regret it. Got it?"

He nods.

"Good," I fake a smile again. "Have her home by 6:30, she has somewhere to go tonight."

Ali's POV

James is awkwardly quiet in the car, and after a while, I decide to break the silence.

"So, what did you and my dad talk about?"

"Oh nothing, he just asked me a few questions."

"Like what?"

"Typical guy stuff. He asked me what sports I like, if I prefer PlayStation or XBox, nothing serious." He laughs.

I can tell he's probably lying, but I decide not to bother him with more questions, so I smile.

He nods. "So I hear it's your birthday soon."

"Yeah, next Friday. Did my dad tell you?"

"No, I overheard your friends talking about it yesterday."

"Way to eavesdrop," I joke, and he shrugs, smiling.

"We're here."

"Well, it was nice walking around and talking to you. Thanks for tonight, it was fun."

I lean over and hug James goodbye, before getting out of his car and walking up the sidewalk to my house.

James and I had a great time. We talked about funny things, he told me about his weird fear of squirrels, and I told him about the time I was at Chuck-E-Cheese's and I peed my pants in front of all of my friends at Rachel's and I's fifth birthday party. We took funny selfies on my phone, and laid in the grass and stared at the sky.

When I walk in the door, I try to hide my smile when I see my dad sitting at the kitchen table.

"So, how was your date?"

"It wasn't a date. And it was okay."

"What did you guys do?"

"Nothing more than that?"

"Yes," I sigh, rolling my eyes.

I grab a granola bar from the cupboard, and go upstairs to my room to get my things ready to go to my mom's.

I grab my black volleyball duffel bag, and throw a few outfits in it, as well as a brush and some hairties, and usual toiletries.

I unwrap the granola bar and quickly eat it. I look out my window, to see my mom pull into our driveway. I waste no time in running downstairs and bolting out the door. I'd rather be with my mom than my dad, who obviously doesn't trust me.

"Well you're excited to see me," my mom giggles when I get into the front seat.

I shrug innocently as Rachel gets in the car, and my mom pulls out of the driveway.

"So, how have you girls been?" My mom asks.

"I've been pretty good."

Rachel rolls her eyes.

"Yeah, because your little boyfriend," she mumbles.

My mom must not have heard my bratty sister, or if she did, she didn't say anything.

The ride to her house is quiet, with the exception of a few questions here and there from my mom, who tries to break the awkward silence.

When we get to her house, I'm putting my stuff away when my phone vibrates in my pocket.

James: Ali, we need to talk.
