23. The Incident

I heard a crack while I was sleeping, but I didn't think it mattered.

It did.

I heard it twice more, before I felt the warm liquid and searing pain.

I screamed at the top of my lungs and someone came rushing up. I couldn't see anything.

"There's glass embedded into your face, Clarissa. The doctors will get it out, soon," a voice said. I didn't know who it was or what happened. "Luckily you didn't take your glasses off, so you'll be able to see again!" The same voice said.
"I'm Nurse Annabel, by the way," she said.
I stayed still not able to move.

FIVE HOURS LATER

I woke up, gasping for air, sitting up, but falling back down. "Good, you're awake," Annabel said.
I slowly opened my eyes, wincing in the bright lights. Slowly I sat up, looking around. "We got the glass out, but there will be scars forever," Annabel informed me.

"Okay," I said. She handed me a mirror and I looked at myself. I still had my brilliant blue eyes, wavy blonde hair, and fair skin. But I had a scar. Er- a few scars: one from the bottom of my right eye going down my cheek; one going straight down the left side of my face; and a few more.

Talia, Max, Madi, and Tanner all rushed over to me.
"I'm so sorry!" Talia sobbed. "What'd'ya mean?" I rasped.

"I'm the one that put the glass there!"
Madi and the others just looked at me. Staring.

"The one from the bottom of your lip will go away in a few months," Annabel reassured me. I smiled at her, and she nodded at the clipboard. "Couldn't you take our the glass with magic?" I asked her. "Not this glass. There was some of it inside of your skull," she shook her head.

"Oh."

There was dead silence in the room. "You will be released in two weeks," she said. "Unless your parents sign this release form," Annabel said.

I called for Snowflake, my owl, to send it to my parents.

She came back a day later with the signatures.

"You are free to go," Nurse Annabel said. I smiled and left.
