Lost Stars

“If you want to know, you might wanna sit down then.”
I didn’t question.
Once seated on the couch, he opened his mouth, “I murdered a man.”
I choked.

12. CHAPTER 12

The next morning, it all started out weird.

When I was a child, and in my second foster home, it was Christmas. The family, the Fitz’s, had decided to watch some movie to spend the night. Although I don’t even remember the name of the movie, I vividly remember the part where the girl woke up in the morning and the guy brought a tray of breakfast to the bed for her. Then she was all shocked- mighty fake- and for god knows why she didn’t even take a nibble from the tray- what a bitch- and then the lovey dovey kisses, as scripted.

Only did I know this was going to happen to me.

Not the kissy part, of course. Just the basic breakfast-in-bed routine.

Finely at 8 in the sunny morning, there were two knocks at my door. Not that I lock it, but chivalry comes with consequences, I suppose. I cracked open my eyes, the sunlight creeping into my vision. I looked at the door to see Harry, shirtless and messy hair, holding a tray and a Daisy hanging from the corner. He gleaned a smile at me, showing his teeth, but his eyes held a sleepy story of their own.

He handed out the Daisy and said, “Hey. Good morning.”

I sat up on my bed and took the flower. “This will be quite a morning, I guess.”

He set the tray on the table and turned to look at me. “Well, I figured this might as well be my last morning as a free man. And without a doubt, you have worked so very very hard in every way to save me.” He sat down on the bed and took my hand and added, “ And for whatsoever cause, you didn’t give up on me. Even though I had. So, it’s just a way to repay you.”

I shook my head. “Nonsense. We still have like 28 hours, Harry. I’ll figure something out, I promise.” I pressed his hands and smiled.

For a moment, when he smiled back at me, I felt my heart lift up. I could feel his grip on my hand get tighter, his eyes taking in more and more of me with every second. It was like his eyes held this parallel world of their own. And without a care, I wanted to go there. I kept staring into his eyes, for all that was around me ceased to exist. And before I knew it, the air between us was as thin as paper. The air he breathed out was what I breathed in. He closed his eyes, tilting his head forward. I followed.

The tip of his nose touched my skin, setting my heart ablaze. The air between us heated up. But just before our lips could touch, I opened my eyes to see Harry backing away.

In that instance, to kiss her was all I wanted. I wanted to feel her lips, drawing her in, only me breathing for the two of us.

But she has a boyfriend.

Turning my heart to stone, I pushed away. Our lips were so close, but I moved apart. My arms were ready to pull her into me, but I stopped. I didn’t wish to, but I had to.

When I looked at Diana, she simply smiled and said, “Well, I’ll just plunge right into this wonderful breakfast.”

She was broken.
