A Universe Trapped in a Labyrinth

This is my boring and interesting and teenager life spanning from age 15 to 18 (May 2015-August 2018)
Within you'll find many re-inventions of myself, boy trouble, school trouble and life trouble. (Plus interesting bits I thought I would include as well).
Do you dare to enter the maze?

159. Rudy Francisco

On the weekend I was invited to a slam poetry event, something I have never been to before. I had only once heard of the poet and my sister happily dragged me along for the ride.

The supporting act, who was brave to shock the crowd in a leopard print dress and boots, was eccentric and just the thing to warm the crowd up before Rudy came on. He spoke of the intricacies of living in both Nottingham and Newcastle and trying to find a home in both.

Then Rudy Francisco, quite a famous American poet, entered the stage with flair. He read several poems from his book Helium and even more from memory, which I honestly don't know how he memorised that many.

He spoke of two love poems, recounting the stories behind them with the confidence of name dropping the ex's that inspired them.

"I know this sounds strange but every now and then I pray that God somehow turns you back into one of my ribs / Just so I would never have to spend an entire day without you." - Rudy Francisco.

He then spoke of how when people learn his poems are about the struggles of black people in America they don't like them, which then proves the point of why he writes about it in the first place. Personally, I don't understand why people would want to restrict poetry to a race, gender or religion, it's poetry for god's sake.

My sister loves him so I had to later coax her to get her book signed and get a photo with him. I also got a photo with him because why not, plus he really is a wonderful poet who reminded me what it is to write.

"The only difference between a garden and a graveyard is only what you choose to put in the soil."
