What if one day you found out that the monsters you thought only existed in stories, were real?
Years after the discovery of Vampires, seventeen year old Jade and her twin sister Violet are sent to the very first Vampire Containment Facility. Also known as Campus Eternal.
At the school, Jade is confronted by Vampires who believe she can save them, but she doesn't think she is strong enough.
There is a man there who everyone is afraid of, he is personally responsible for the death of the last human at Campus Eternal. Even though people see him as wicked and cruel, she believes that he can help her save the Vampires.
The only question is: Is he willing to help her?

25. Prototype Ch. 24 - Not an Angel

I couldn’t believe it.

I finally figure out what Lucian is and he runs off and disappears for a few days.

Everyone I asked hadn’t seen him, or at least Lucian told them to tell me that they hadn’t seen him. Bastard.

I need him to confirm that he is an Angel.

That’s the only way I’ll know for sure.

I can speculate as much as I want, but until he says it, I don’t know.

I laid on my bed trying my hardest not to sleep, I had to stay awake.

The door opened and the first voice I heard belonged to my twin, Violet.

“Hey, Jade” she said walking in.

“Hi” I said staring up at the ceiling.

“Hey” Ariel said.

I sat up to look at them “Aren’t you both here at a weird time?”

They both didn’t seem to understand.

Violet is never usually here because she is with Juliet, and Ariel is usually here early in the morning, not very often does she come here after classes.

“So I hear there is something going on with Lucian” Violet said.

“Do you?” I asked.

Ariel didn’t look too pleased, I can still see how pissed she looked when she found out that Lucian wasn’t really dead. Words could not describe that kind of fury.

“Have you talked to him recently?” Violet asked.

“I haven’t seen him for a few days” I stated.

“Well then why is it that when I asked Blaze where Lucian was, he told me to tell you that you would have to do better than sending me to find out where he was?”

I shrugged “Maybe he is on his period?”

Ariel made a grossed out face.

“Yeah” I said “Men seem to have one too.”

Violet glared at me “So what?” she asked “Are you two fighting again?”

“We’re not fighting, per say” I said.

“Jade” Violet hissed.

“What?” I demanded “He goes off and has a bitch fit, how is it my fault?”

“It usually is these days” Ariel stated.

I looked over at Ariel “Don’t you have a war to prepare for?”

Her eyes went wide “What has he been saying to you?”

“Nothing” I shrugged “I’m just very observant.”

Violet shook her head “No, you’re nosy.”

I huffed “I find out information, does it really matter how I do it?”

“Yeah” Violet stated “It kind of does.”

I shrugged “Oh well then.”

“So” Ariel said “Spit it out, what do you know?”

“Well” I looked over at Violet to see the glare she was giving me “I noticed the lack of Brock these days.”

Ariel looked to the floor “He is a Werewolf after all.”

“I mean the complete lack of him” I stated “He’s never here, he doesn’t attend any of his classes, where is he?”

“He’s been at Campus Inferno for a while” she stated.

“But you guys are still together right?” Violet asked.

Ariel didn’t say anything.

“Oh my god” she pulled Ariel’s hands into her own “I’m so sorry.”

“Why?” I asked “What happened?”

“He couldn’t take the rejection from his pack” she shrugged “It was either them or me; he made his choice very clear.”

I thought that they were in love; love wouldn’t just give up that easily, would it?

Ariel smiled lightly “It’s alright; I just kind of figured that if I hung out with you guys more it would take my mind off things.”

Violet and I asking questions about him didn’t exactly help with that.

“I’m sorry” I said “I didn’t know.”

“It’s alright” she said “I don’t really know either.”

“So there really is a war brewing?” I asked.

Ariel nodded “I don’t know what’s going to happen to us.”

I didn’t know what was going to happen to anyone. It was my job to try and save the Vampires, so why wasn’t I trying?

Okay, maybe it was because I didn’t know where to start, but I’ll get the hang of it eventually.

Part of me felt kind of bad for Ariel, so Violet and I let her stay the night in our room. We stayed up all night and talked about all kinds of things, our past, our family; it was really nice to see a new part of her.

There was this ticking sound in my ear, and I couldn’t put my finger on where it was coming from.

I opened my eyes only to be blinded by lights.

The smell of something floral filled the air, it was a good smell.

“It changes every time I come here.”

I shot up from where I was to see Lucian standing only inches away from where I sat.

“I thought you were the one throwing a temper tantrum this time” I stated.

He didn’t say anything.

“Are you going to say something?” I asked.

“Hi” was all he said.

“Are you going to tell me that I was right?” I asked.

“No” he said.

“So where are we?” I asked “In my mind or some sort of place you made up?”

“This is a dream” he stated “Your subconscious, not mine.”

“Then how do you know about it?” I demanded.

“I just do” he stated.

“Liar, liar pants on fire” I said.

He sighed “I think your brain reverted back to grade school Jade, I’m a little worried.”

I laughed “Sure you are.”

He just stared back at me.

“Since when have you been worried about anyone besides yourself?” I asked.

“It’s been a while” he admitted.

Part of me felt flattered, but if I was dreaming then it didn’t matter what he said.

“So tell me what you are” I stated.

“Nope” he shrugged.

I glared “Then leave.”

“Nope” he said again.

“Seriously, you’re in my dream” I said “If you don’t answer me then you can leave.”

“Or” he said sitting in front of me “I could just stay right where I am.”

I really wanted to wake up right now.

Lucian just sat there, he didn’t say anything, and he didn’t do anything but look at me.

“This is starting to get weird” I stated.

“You’ll be fine” he said.

“So are you going to tell me what you are or not?” I asked.

“Not” he said.

“Why can’t you just say yes or no?”

“I already said no” he stated.

“But you’re lying” I hissed.

“How would you know if I was lying or not?” he asked amused.

“Because, it just feels” I sighed “Like I’m right.”

“You shouldn’t always trust your instincts.”

“Well I am right, why do you keep denying it?”

“Because there is no way I could be an Angel” he shrugged.

“You’re lying.”

“I’m not.”

“Yes you are” I growled “Just be honest with me.”

“Why?” he asked “You’re just going to leave.”

“No I won’t” I said.

“Yes” he sighed “You will.”

“When will you finally stop running away from me?” I asked “Aren’t you tired of having to keep all this stuff a secret?”

He looked down at the poppies surrounding us.

“Don’t you want someone you can tell everything to?” I asked “I won’t run away, I promise.”

“You can’t make that promise” he stated “Because no matter what you say now, you will leave.”

“I am not my ancestors” I hissed “Obviously there is something wrong with me, maybe this is why.”

“I seriously doubt that.”

“Why can’t you just give me a chance?” I asked “You shut me down every time.”

“I’ve learned from past mistakes, this will be no different.”

“It’s already different” I pointed out “We met in a Vampire school Lucian.”

He looked away.

“Hold on” I growled “Are you telling me that I met you before?”

He looked up at me “You were too young to remember.”

“Oh my god” I had to look away.

I met him before? What the hell?

“When?” I asked.

“Like I said” he stated “You were too young to remember.”

“Obviously” I hissed “Where did we meet?”

“It was a park” he said “The one your mother used to take you and Violet to all the time.”

“How the hell do you know that?” I demanded.

He gaze remained on the poppies “I know a lot more than you think I do.”

“Maybe you should stop stalking my family” I said harshly.

“Right” he said low “Stalking.”

“If you were an Angel I would understand” I said smoothly “But since you aren’t its pretty creepy of you.”

“Well sorry for being creepy then.”

He was acting strange, my dreams never usually lasted this long, so how was I here still?

“Shouldn’t I be waking up any minute?” I asked.

“Tomorrow is Sunday” he stated “So no, Violet has no reason to wake you.”

I sighed “Of course.”

“Are you really that desperate to get away from me, that you’ll let your sister wake you up?”

I shrugged “It’s frustrating talking to you when I know you’re hiding things from me.”

“Likewise” he said.

“This is different” I said “You already know a lot about me, why won’t you let me get to know more about you?”

He looked up at me again “I fear that if someone from your family learns what I am…”
he stopped.

“Tell me” I said low.

“I fear that you will be taken from me” he admitted.

“Shut up” I said helplessly “Just tell me that you’re an Angel already.”

“It’s been a long time since I’ve been called that” his gaze dropped again “You were right about the scars on my back.”

“Your wings were taken from you?” I asked.

“More like ripped from my back” the pain in his voice made my heart ache.

“What was it like?” I asked.

“You wouldn’t believe me even if I told you.”

“Try me” I said.

“I have free will here” he stated “In heaven I was made to worship humans.”

“Is that why you hate us?” I asked.

He opened his mouth but shut it “This conversation is over.”

“What?” I asked confused.

“You already know more than you should, leave it at that.”

“Well you obviously are in a talking mood” I said “So talk to me.”

“You’re going to wake up now” he stated.

As if on cue the poppy field started to melt away.

I found myself walking around with Ariel, Violet and Juliet. I was with all the girls.

Strangely I found myself having more fun then I would have.

Of course I kept my new found Lucian discovery to myself; he finally admitted what he was. I knew he wouldn’t be able to keep it to himself for too long.

What I really wanted to do, was see his scars again.

We even did things most girls do when they go out with their friends, lunch for one. We did something we probably shouldn’t have, but we did.

We got dressed, Ariel had all kinds of wigs for the occasion, and we snuck off campus.

Of course we had the help of one of our male Demon friend, Abel that is.

I was the one that asked him to take us; I made sure he didn’t ask Blaze or Lucian because they would just be jerks about it.

We went into clothes stores, Ariel and Juliet bought us all kinds of things. Who would have thought that they would have had so much money?

I’d have to say the best thing about today was that we all got to be someone else. We were dressed up as someone we only knew from a memory, wigs cut in ways that none of us dared to actually have our hair cut like. It was truly an amazing day.

That is, until we got back to Campus Eternal.

“We should probably go to your room” Abel stated.

We all already knew that he and Blaze shared a room, so none of us protested.

In a flash we returned to campus with all our stuff in hand, all of us were feeling good until we set our eyes on the figure in the room.

“I know you too well” he growled.

“Blaze” Abel said low.

“I knew that if you were doing something you weren’t supposed to you would hide it from me” he had this crazy look in his eyes. I was scared for Abel.

“It wasn’t his fault” I said “I asked him to.”

He barely glanced at me “And he could have said no.”

“I practically begged, it was for Ariel” I said “She needed a good day out, we all did.”

He looked over at Abel; it looked like he was searching for the answers as if they were written on Abel’s face. Which obviously they weren’t.

Blaze looked beyond pissed.

“It was my fault” Abel said quickly “You were right, I could have said no, but I didn’t.”

“Don’t take the blame” I said “It was me who asked him; if not for me then he would have never had to choose.”

I knew that Blaze would never lay a hand on me, he loved Lucian too much. I could at least protect Abel from his wrath.

“Oh” he said “So that’s how it is then, that simple?”

I nodded as I looked over at Abel, but I wasn’t expecting Blaze to strike me.

I heard gasps as I hit the floor.

“Leave her alone!” I heard Violet and the others hiss.

I was lifted off the ground by my neck; I could feel his nails digging into my neck. I couldn’t breathe.

“Let her go Blaze” Abel shouted.

Blaze only dug his nails deeper into my neck; I could already feel the blood running, because my hair was sticking to the back of my neck.

I scratched at his hand in hopes that he would release me. I couldn’t keep my eyes open, it seemed like I was fading.

Then I hit the floor.

The only sound I could make out was my heart pounding in my ears as it sent oxygen to my brain.

I opened my eyes to see Blaze on the ground, Abel leaning over him, and blood everywhere.

I felt hands on me; I didn’t know who it was.

“Jade” I heard Violet call “Don’t you dare fall asleep.”

I nodded doing my best to stay awake.

What happened, did Abel do that to Blaze?

“How many times have I fucking told you?” the voice sounded angry.

“He wasn’t going to hurt her Lucian” Abel said.

My eyes shot open to land on the new figure in the room. Lucian had blood all over him.

“This will be his punishment for disobeying me.”

I watched as Lucian smashed whatever he had in his hand.

Blaze let out a painful scream.

“Take her to the infirmary” Lucian said “She will need stitches.”

Of course I go blank before anything else can happen.

The last thing I remembered was shopping.

I felt like a regular girl, nothing was different. I felt like I was home, like at any minute I was going to wake up from this dream, and I was going to have to go to school with all those normal people. The world that I came from is just a dream now.

I willed my eyes to open, they tried their hardest to stay shut, but I won.

“You know” I heard a voice “I see you in here too much.”
I rolled my head to the side to see Sage, she stood there staring at me.

“I can’t help it” I groaned.

“You’re one lucky human” she said.

“Not really” I said “Violet it the one that seems to stay out of trouble.”

“She is different” she stated “She may be your twin, but you are different.”

“That makes her different too” I pointed out “If two people are different, the only thing they have in common is that they are different from one another.”

Sage chuckled “You think too much.”

“Well there’s a first” I said.

I tried to laugh, but I felt this sharp stab at my neck and I cringed.

“Try not to laugh” she said “You have stitches in your neck.”

It wasn’t the first time.

I wasn’t sure why, but the whole scenario that went down in my room came flooding back.

“Where is Blaze?” I asked.

Did I really care? Not really, but it seemed like I was worried more for Abel than I was for the actual injured man.

“You should probably rest” Sage said.

Something happened.

“What happened?” I asked her.

I can clearly remember all the blood, whose was it? Was it my blood?

“Blaze is dead” she stated.

I sat there, I couldn’t think, I could barely breathe.

“How?” I breathed.

“Lucian killed him” she said low.

He killed Blaze? Blaze actually hurt me? What was happening to us?

“Lucian has been waiting outside to talk to you” Sage said “Are you ready to talk?”

I hesitated before nodding.

Sage opened the door and walked out as Lucian made his way in.

The blood was still on him, how long had he been out there?

“Don’t talk” he said.

I looked up at him.

He grit his teeth “Blaze put his hands on you, I waited too long before I showed up.”

He pulled a chair forward and laid his head on the bed and used his arms to cover it.

“I killed him” he picked his head up just a little “I ripped his heart out, and I smashed it.”

It was killing him that he did that.

I sat up to run my hand through his hair “If it means anything, thank you.”

He looked up at me after stopping my hand “Madness” he said low.

“I’m not going anywhere” I said to reassure him.

He set his head back down, but didn’t let go of my hand.

This feeling I had right now, it was beyond what I expected, I felt so warm and it almost made me feel numb.

“You should probably sleep” he said.

“I slept long enough” I stated.

He stared at our hands “You have more scars on your neck now.”

“You made it seem like you already know everything there is to know about me” I stated “How do you not know about that?”

“It’s not like I sat outside your house and watched you” he stated “Some information I was at the right place at the right time to know.”

“So you really don’t know how I got this?” I asked running my hand over the jagged scar.

“You know about mine” he said “I think it’s about time I’ve heard about yours.”

“One condition” I said.

He sighed “It better not be weird.”

“Too bad” I said “It’s pretty damn weird.”

He looked up at me, waiting for me to say it.

“Take your shirt off.”

He looked amused “I think it’s a little too soon in our relationship.”

I couldn’t help but smile “It is G rated pervert.”
“How did I know that this was going to be weird?” he asked.

“Because I am weird” I stated “Now shirt off.”

He sighed before removing his shirt.

“Turn around” I instructed.

He hesitated before turning around.

I didn’t hesitate to get off the bed; I ran my hand over each scar. I could feel his skin reacting to my touch.

“Was it painful?” I asked.

“I would do it over, a thousand times” he said.

I felt my face go red, I remembered clearly what he did last time he was close enough to my scar. I got to my tippy toes to place a kiss on the top of the left scar, and moved over to place one on the right.

“Jade” Lucian said strangely “Stop.”

I wrapped my arms around him and buried my face in his back.

“I believe it’s your turn” he stated.

“Just stay like this” I said.

“You’re going to have to tell me” he said “I took my shirt off for you.”

“I know” I mumbled “I just need to work up the courage to tell you.”

He stood there silent.

“I was ten” I began “Life wasn’t always great at my house; I used to have a dad you know.”

He nodded.

“He did this to me” I could feel the tears building up “He used to beat us, every day I would go to school covered in bruises.”

His body stiffened, and he lifted his arms so his hands rubbed mine.

“I started cutting not too long after the beatings started”

“Jade” he said low.

“It was the only way to take my mind off of the rest of my body, this way all I had to worry about was what I did to myself, to take away the power he had over me” I had to stop for a minute, I wasn’t breathing properly.

“You don’t have to tell me, I can wait until you’re ready” he said.

I shook my head “He thought I was trying to kill myself, of course I thought about it, but Violet needed me, I never would have done that.”

I squeezed him tighter.

“So when my father found out about my wrists, he waited for my mom to leave for work” I took a deep breath “He said that he would finish the job, since I couldn’t.”

His grip on my hands tightened.

“Incase you were wondering, it wasn’t rope” I said low “The only thing he had in the garage was barbed wire.”

He forced my hands away and turned to face me, his eyes were different than I had ever seen them.

“It seems cruel” I said “Why would he have barbed wire right?” I asked low.

He pulled me close to him.

“He better not be dead” Lucian hissed “So I can kill him.”

“He tried to blame it on the neighbor dog” I said “But everybody at the hospital knew there was no way.”

Lucian didn’t say anything.

“He tried to hang me with it” I mumbled “To think, he only had the barbed wire because my mom asked him to put it up along our fence to keep the neighbors dog out.”

“What happened after the hospital?” he asked.

“He went to prison” I stated “And I found out he wasn’t really my father, which might have been why he hated me so much.”

“What about your sister?” he asked “Surely he didn’t hold back on her.”

I shook my head “Violet was his daughter.”

He pulled me back to look at me.

“We are twins with different fathers” I stated “That is why we don’t look the same.”

“How would he have known which one of you wasn’t his?” he asked angrily.

“Paternal instinct maybe” I suggested.

He just looked down at me.

“The only person I couldn’t be without was Violet” I said “When I had nightmares she always knew how to take them away.”

He wrapped his arms protectively around me “Maybe I should be nicer to her.”

I nodded “Yeah, or maybe you could just treat her the same so that she doesn’t know that you know.”

“That’s a maybe” he said.

“If it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t be standing here now.”

“Because of the nightmares?” he asked.

“She walked in while he was holding me there” I said “We were both scarred, mine physical, hers mental. But I would take the pain for her any day.”

I felt like I was in a movie, I was spilling my heart to some guy who asked me about my past. I wasn’t that helpless girl anymore; I am stronger because of it.

“Don’t be afraid to talk to me” I said “I might not always agree with your tactics, but I could help you make decisions.”

He placed a kiss on my forehead “Not right now.”

I sighed, all I wanted was for him to let me in, but I guess this was a start, a huge one.

“Do you understand now?” he asked “This is why I’m not an Angel.”

I was about to say the sappiest thing in my entire life.

Okay, I won’t. Just kidding.

“Shut up” I hissed “You can be my Angel.”

When he smiled, I knew I was doing something right.
