24. Prototype Ch. 23 - Liar

“What are you doing here?” Logan asked.

I wasn’t sure what to say.

“Uh” was all I managed to let out.

“You shouldn’t be here” he said keeping the door only open a little so I could see him.

“Is Lucian here?” I asked.

“He is.”

“Can I talk to him?” I asked.

He shook his head.

I glared at him now “Let me in the room Logan.”

“No” he said back plainly.

I tried to force my way in, but he shut the door before I managed to get my foot in the way.

“Damn it” I growled.

“Find something else to do” I heard him through the door.

“I don’t know what else to do” I hissed.

I felt all alone again.

Violet was gone. Lucian was gone. Abel was gone. All I had was me myself and I.

Misery loves company, so where was mine?

I frowned making my way back to my room.

So I guess I get to go back to my room and be bored there.

It took me a few minutes before I was in front of my door again.

I opened the door and as soon as I walked through I felt something horrible.

I felt sick and my head began to throb.

“Jade?” I heard my name “You’re back.”

I looked up to see Violet and Ariel.

“Are you alright?” Ariel asked looking at me funny.

I nodded “Yeah.”

And for some reason all I could think of was LIAR.

I lied about being alright, I was a liar.

“Where have you been?” I asked Violet.

“With Juliet” she shrugged “We were with Ariel earlier.”

“And?” I asked.

“That’s all” Violet shrugged.

The look in her eyes told me she was lying.

Something was happening, something they weren’t telling me.

I nodded slowly so I didn’t let on that I knew.

“Well I should probably go” Ariel said standing up.

I watched as she made her way to the door.

“I’ll talk to you both tomorrow” she said closing the door behind her.

I looked over at Violet.

“How are you?” she asked.

I shrugged “So did you guys talk about anything interesting while I was gone?”

“Not that I can think of off the top of my head.”

I nodded slowly “Just checking.”

Next thing I knew I was walking over to my bed.

“Are you sure you’re alright Jade?” she asked.

“I’m fine” I lied “I’m just going to go back to sleep.”

She nodded “Oh, alright.”

I laid down in the clothes I was wearing. I didn’t care right now.

“Jade” I heard a low voice.

I rolled over to avoid the voice.

I felt something shake me.

I sat up to see Abel kneeling next to my bed.

“Where the hell did you go?” I hissed.

“I had to tell Lucian your idea.”

“Did you tell him it was mine?” I asked.

He hesitated before shaking his head.

I wasn’t sure what to think about that.

“If I told him I was talking to you about this” he paused “He would be furious.”

I knew he would be, I don’t know why I keep thinking otherwise.

“He’s on it” he said low “He is going to make sure Vampires everywhere are prepared just in case, as well as the Werewolves allying themselves with them.”

I nodded “So then what do we do?”

“Nothing” he sat down completely.

“Why just nothing?” I asked getting up.

“Because there is nothing we can do in a war that isn’t ours” he stated “I’m sorry.”

It made sense; I just don’t understand why I felt like I needed to be more involved.

“It’s alright” he said low “I have nothing to do with it either.”

I made a face “So then why is Lucian so involved?”

Abel didn’t say anything.

“He isn’t a Vampire, so why is he helping them?”

“To give them a fair chance” he looked right at me “Isn’t that what we all deserve?”

I couldn’t help but agree, but now only one question was on my mind.

What is he?

“So is Lucian a Werewolf?” I asked.

He shook his head “You think too much.”

“I wouldn’t have to think if I knew” I stated.

“Well I’m sorry Jade, but like I’ve said. It’s just not my place to tell you.”

“Fine” I murmured “Just let me know when we can go to his house.”

He nodded.

He must have understood that I wasn’t very happy, that must have been why he left without another word.

I don’t understand all the fighting.

Why must brothers constantly be at each others necks? They have the same mother or the same father, why not have something else in common?

I shook my head before sitting up. What was I supposed to do until I figured out the curse?

Something was going on, Ariel and Brock used to come over almost all the time. Now there is every once in a while.

They must know about the feud between the Vampires and the Werewolves.

Hell, she is a Vampire and he is a Werewolf.

How did something like that even manage to happen in the first place? Cupid?

I found myself looking around the room, I just don’t understand anymore.

Why can’t life go back to being predictable? Where the worst thing I had to worry about was failing a class or having Melissa Kittredge steal my lunch money.

I hated this feeling.

I was helpless here. I was practically a ten year old in a room of adults.

My opinion doesn’t matter, things I do aren’t important, I’m not even important.

Maybe I needed to throw a little temper tantrum to get some attention.

I couldn’t help but smirk at my brilliant idea, that’s exactly what I was going to do.

If they want to treat me like a child then that is exactly what I’ll be, a child.

The next few days I practically avoided everybody.

Violet was the only one I couldn’t manage to get away from, so yeah.

I noticed more things when I ignored everybody.

Violet was constantly with Juliet, Ariel was fighting with Brock, Zero and Zane weren’t really around much.

Lucian was off being an ass somewhere else, Abel wasn’t here, and neither was Blaze.

Logan was doing whatever Logan does.

I was just left alone.

It had officially been a week since I last saw Lucian.

Today was Tuesday, and I had classes to get to.

“Jade” I heard Violet call “Have you seen my blue shirt?”

I glared at her “You have many blue shirts, how do I know which one you’re talking about?”

“It’s the one with all the glitter” she stated.

Of course it was.

“No Violet, I haven’t seen it” I sighed.

She shrugged “Alright.”

I picked up my backpack and headed off to my first class.

To be honest I wasn’t very excited about English right now.

I wanted to sleep more, or do pretty much nothing.

But of course on the one day I don’t want to do anything, we are assigned to make our own book.

How was I going to write my own book?

Okay I knew how, but it would have to be a children’s book.

It should mean something. It should be for when I get out of here. I will have a story for the world, inspired by my life here.

I just need some time to work on it.

We were given a week, so next Tuesday I am supposed to turn it in.

But right now, I had no idea how to start it, what to call it, hell I didn’t even know what I was doing right now.

The bell rang; I couldn’t help but take a breath of relief. I was free of this class, for now.

I headed to Anatomy and took a seat in the back.

I had the feeling that it was going to be a long day.

Mr. Grossman stood at the front of the classroom and talked randomly about different kinds of species.

I didn’t care much for this lecture; it didn’t tell me what Lucian was, so I didn’t care.

“But today we are going to discuss something else” Mr. Grossman stated “Something that can’t simply be made by anyone.”

I found myself leaning forward in my chair so that I could hear.

“Angels” he said almost too simply.

I found myself making a face.

It couldn’t possibly be…

“They can only be made by one person” he stated “And they can only be killed by that same person or his brothers.”

Lucian didn’t die.

He came back to life.

“An Angel is usually identified by their wings” Mr. Grossman said “Each set of wings are unique to each Angel.”

Wings, Lucian doesn’t have wings.

“But there are two different kinds of Angels.”

Two different kinds…

“One resides in heaven at the foot of God” he stated “The other either rebelled against him and joined Lucifer, or they had fallen because of their lack of love for their father.”

I heard someone snicker “Lucian, Lucifer, could it be any more obvious?”

I swallowed hard, they weren’t serious were they?

“Quiet down” Mr. Grossman hissed.

The students sat there watching the man glare at them.

“Many don’t believe in Angels, or God for that matter” Mr. Grossman stated “But many people also don’t believe in the Devil, but he is real.”

I felt chills.

“Vampires were myths until they were discovered” he stated “What else could this world hold?”

I didn’t want to think about that, I was still trying to wrap my head around Angels.

But there was something I needed to put into consideration.

Every species Mr. Grossman had ever mentioned I’ve found out is real. So that must mean that Angels were real.

What if Lucian really was an Angel?

I shook my head. Lucian was so mean, there was no way.

He came back from the dead after the Mayor had him killed.

‘An Angel can only be killed by God, or one of his brothers.’ The Mayor’s men were neither.

“There aren’t very many Fallen Angels” Mr. Grossman said “At least not that I know of.”

He was talking to the group of kids closest to his desk.

“Most of the Angels that sided with Lucifer were sent right to hell right along with him.”

Lucifer did sound similar to Lucian.

But Lucian isn’t pretty, the bible didn’t hold back when it came to describing how beautiful Lucifer was.

I guess Lucian could be… no he was handsome, not pretty.

I don’t know, people back then could have interpreted beauty either way.

Part of me refused to even consider Lucian being an Angel, but the only way to know for sure is to confront him.

Maybe if I asked he would admit it, and then maybe we can… but the curse.

How did the curse fit into all of this?

Again I found myself shaking my head, I have to ask him. I have to know for sure what he is.

I just had to hurry up and get out of this damn class.

Photography lasted forever.

Zero was here today, but I didn’t say anything to him. I had to talk to Lucian before I brought this discovery to anyone else.

For art Miss Shelby showed us famous artwork from the early twentieth century.

I stepped foot in music and found Violet doing what she did best, nagging me to death.

I sat on the bench for an hour doing my best to block her out, only being successful for a few minutes.

Self defense was short, Violet and I had to learn to take a hit.

Let’s just say that my face isn’t exactly up to par right now, but then again, neither is hers.

I made my way back to my room alone since Violet figured it would be a good idea to visit Sage and the infirmary.

Violet is a pansy, take her battle scars like a man.

Okay I know I shouldn’t be saying that, but what the hell else was I supposed to say?

I shook my head, I needed to sleep. That was the only way this skull splitting headache would go away without me having to medicate myself.

I woke up feeling hot.

It felt like all the air in the room had vacated, and I was suffocating.

I ripped the blanket off of me to sit up.

Violet still wasn’t here, and by the looks of it, it was dark outside.

I checked the clock on the nightstand only to see 2:19AM.

I sighed; she was still out in the middle of the night?

So then why was I here?

Shrugging, I got up to throw on a pair of pants, a jacket, and my shoes.

It was my turn to go out and there was nothing she could do about it.

Of course once I got to the cafeteria, I was reminded how often I come here. I wasn’t exactly being a rebel.

I grabbed a hotdog and whatever soda my hand reached first.

No one was here, just me, myself, and I.

“You’re back to this habit?” I heard a voice ask.

Part of me cringed, I knew the owner of that voice.

I turned to see Lucian in the doorway, making it so that I barely saw him.

“I never left” I shrugged.

“So” he said “I hear you’re having social issues.”

I stared down at my food “When have I not?”

“I meant more recently” he stated.

I shrugged “I guess.”

“Giving everyone the old fashioned silent treatment?” he asked “You would be the one to throw a temper tantrum, but a whole week?”

I glared at my food now.

“You’re seventeen Jade, act like it.”

I shot out of my chair to glare at him “I’ll do whatever I want to!”

He opened his mouth to retort, but he froze “What happened to you?”

I had to think back on the last twenty-four hours “None of your business!”

“You have a black eye” he said “And another bruise on your jaw.”

“Oh no” I fake gasped “Jade couldn’t possibly know what she’s talking about.”

“Jade” he hissed.

“I’m fine” I said harshly “Don’t you have something better to do Satan?”

He looked appalled at what I had just said.

I could hear my own eyes rolling.

“I came here to check on you” he growled “But clearly I can see how better off you are.”

I nodded “Bye” I waved “Don’t send me a postcard.”

How was I being so mean? Last time I tried it killed me, now I felt practically nothing.

He didn’t budge.

“Seriously?” I hissed “You show up at the last minute and expect me to swoon?”

He made a face “It’s hard to be mad when you keep speaking nonsense.”

“I make sense” I hissed.

“Not really” he smirked.

I grit my teeth as I stared down “Just leave me alone.”

“We both know how this ended last time” he stated.

He was sure now; I was going to be at his beck and call.

“What are you?” I asked not looking at him.

“That’s not important” he said plainly.

“It is important” I glared up at him “Maybe not to you, but to me it is.”

“I won’t tell you” he shrugged “So drop it.”

“You aren’t a Vampire, I know that” I said looking at him to see an amused look on his face.

“Your point being?” he asked equally amused.

“I know what you are” I said “Why you didn’t die all of it.”

“So” he said “Are you going to keep me in suspense?”

He really thought I didn’t know, that’s the only reason he’s acting so cool about this.

I should mess with how a little.

“Yeah, I know you’re a Werewolf” I stated.

He laughed “Right, that’s why I howl at the moon.”

“Yeah” I nodded “That might explain why you are so into this Vampire Werewolf war.”

The look on his face meant he knew, Abel was talking to me.

Damn it, I didn’t mean to get him in trouble.

“If you’ll excuse me” he said walking away.

“I was joking!” I shouted.

He turned to look at me “No, you were only half serious.”

“You’re an Angel” I said low.

He stopped mid step.

“A what?” he looked almost mad.

“An Angel” I said louder “You’re an Angel.”

“Me, an Angel?” he laughed “How grotesque.”

“Angels are beautiful” I hissed.

“Well I’m no Angel Jade” he shrugged “Whoever you’ve been talking to isn’t feeding you the right information.”

“Why can’t you just tell me?!” I demanded.

“What happened to your face?” he asked.

“Are you kidding me?” I hissed.

“An answer for an answer” he said keeping his eyes on me.

“You swear?” I asked.

He nodded “Only if you tell me.”

“Self defense class” I stated “Are you an Angel?”

“No” he said a little too harsh.

“You are a liar” I stated “You’re lying to me!”

“Angels don’t exist” he stated.

“You died and came back” I said “The only way you could have survived was if you were and Angel, and you did.”

“I’m not an Angel Jade” he said “Just get over it.”

How did I know that I was right? I was gripped by a white fury the more he denied it.

Was it because I thought I was so close to figuring out what he was? Have I run out of ideas?

“But…” I mumbled.

“I have things to do” he said heading for the door again.

Then I suddenly had a good argument, just by looking at his back.

“Those scars” I said “You believe you are no longer an Angel because you don’t have your wings anymore.”

How could it have sounded so simple?

He faced away from me.

“Lucian” I said low “A Fallen Angel is still an Angel.”

Still I wasn’t getting a response from him.

“Lucian?” I asked.

He burst through the door and I did my best to follow after him, but I lost him.

I must have struck a nerve.

One thing I can say for certain, Lucian didn’t deny it this time.

To think, Lucian Cross is an Angel… was an Angel.
