What if one day you found out that the monsters you thought only existed in stories, were real?
Years after the discovery of Vampires, seventeen year old Jade and her twin sister Violet are sent to the very first Vampire Containment Facility. Also known as Campus Eternal.
At the school, Jade is confronted by Vampires who believe she can save them, but she doesn't think she is strong enough.
There is a man there who everyone is afraid of, he is personally responsible for the death of the last human at Campus Eternal. Even though people see him as wicked and cruel, she believes that he can help her save the Vampires.
The only question is: Is he willing to help her?

23. Prototype Ch. 22 - If I Fall

I woke up to the sound of my alarm.

I sat up and didn’t hesitate to get ready for school.

“Ok, what the hell did I miss?”

I turned to look at a confused Violet.

“Nothing” I shrugged.

“Since when have you gotten up before me?” she asked.

“I do it all the time” I stated.

“No you don’t” she stated “You stay up later than me, but you rarely wake up before me.”

“Well today is one of those rare occasions” I said throwing on a pair of dark blue jeans and a plain white shirt.

She stood up to stand in front of me “Seriously Jade, are you okay?”

I nodded as I forced my way into the bathroom to grab a rubber band, and put my hair up.

“Now I know there is something up with you” Violet stopped me.

I sighed “Can I just go to class please?”

“You put your hair up Jade” she said “You don’t do that.”

I shrugged “I’m too lazy to take a shower.”

She glared at me “We are going to talk about this eventually aren’t we?”

I didn’t say anything; I just put my shoes on and grabbed my back pack.

“Jade” she said low “It’s been a week since you found out Lucian is still alive.”

“I don’t care” I said “I told you that.”

“But you do care” she got in front of me again “You are like a damn zombie.”

I shook my head “I have to go, will you please move?”

She hesitated before moving out of my way.

I walked out but I was stopped by Ariel.

“Ah, you’re up” she said surprised.

I fought the urge to roll my eyes.

“Come on” Ariel ushered me back inside.

I frowned feeling like I was trapped in my own room.

“What’s up?” Violet asked her.

“Just seeing how everything is going here” she smiled looking from Violet to me.

“Can I go?” I asked.

Ariel looked confused too “Is she alright?”

“I’m right here you know” I stated.

“Well you wouldn’t tell me the truth” Ariel stated “Violet would.”

“Something is bothering her; I just don’t know what yet.”

“You guys can talk about me as much as you want, when I’m gone” I said.

They both just looked at me.

“Later” I said shutting the door behind me.

The day wasn’t ready to begin and I wasn’t really sure where to go.

The cafeteria was always an option, but I wasn’t hungry.

I made my way there anyway, and I went for a soda.

“You’re up early.”

I felt my blood run cold. He was behind me.

I turned my head slightly to acknowledge that he spoke.

“How are you?” he asked.

I had to ignore him, I had to tell him no.

I turned around to look at him, I already knew whatever I was going to say would immediately be forgotten.

Somehow I already knew I would falter.

“Jade” he said low.

Yet I still managed to pull myself through it.

I cracked open the soda and took a drink of it before answering him “I’m fine.”

He cocked his head to the side “No love confession this time?”

I shook my head “Nope.”

He came closer “Anything you want me to do?”

I shook my head taking another drink “You can leave whenever you want.”

The look on his face startled me.

Worry was clear on his face.

“I’ve thought about what you said” I stated “Maybe I should leave you alone.”

Either I was imagining it, or he really bit his bottom lip “Ah.”

“It’s what you wanted isn’t it?” I asked looking at the can.

“Yeah, it is” he said.

“I don’t need you to keep checking in on me anymore” I said “I’m fine.”

He nodded slowly “Are you certain?”

I nodded “Trust me, I’ve thought about it.”

“You can’t complain when I don’t show up next time.”

“I know” I nodded.

He nodded again “I guess I’ll go.”

He stood there looking at me.

“So I’m the one that has to leave first?” I asked.

He didn’t say anything; he just continued to stare at me.

I shrugged before taking another drink of my soda, and then I headed to the door.

“See you around” I said not even glancing back.

Once I was outside I felt like I had to stop, but I kept walking until I was in my English class.

I sat in my usual spot and I put my head down, because I found myself having a panic attack.

I wanted to look back at him so badly, but I didn’t. I wanted to tell him I loved him, I wanted to kiss him, I wanted to tell him I wanted to see him every night and to never leave me again… instead I pushed him away.

I took in a deep breath before I sat up, like usual we were told to read whatever we wanted to.

Next was Anatomy and I wasn’t too sure I was up for what they were teaching.

“Alright everyone” Mr. Grossman said “We are going to dissect today.”

I stood there confused, what were we going to dissect?

“You are going to be in groups of three” he said “You are going to dissect a cat.”

I almost started to choke.

“Get into your groups and begin.”

I got paired up with people I didn’t know, and I just watched them skin that poor cat.

I couldn’t do it; or rather I really didn’t want to.

What the hell was wrong with today?

First out of nowhere Juliet tells Miss Shelby she wants to model.

Second there was a full on choir in music today, why everyone decided to sing random love songs was beyond me.

Third, Mr. Blue our Self Defense teacher gave Violet and I each a Taser.

They didn’t look like Tasers either, so they were brilliant.

But why he would give us weapons to use on the Vampires was again, beyond me.

The one I got was smaller than I thought it would be, it’s about the size of a cell phone. Instead of all the buttons there was only a switch.

It was something I could easily keep in my pocket in case I needed it.

I decided to go back to my room after classes let out, so here I was, home sweet home.

It felt different being here right now. This morning I talked to Lucian, and somehow I willed myself not to think about him at all until now.

Was there really something wrong with me?

I know I said I loved him, and I do… but what happened?

I glared at the ceiling.

I knew for a fact my feelings haven’t changed for him, but why was I suddenly thinking about the family curse again?

How did we get cursed? Why was it my family to begin with? Why Lucian?

I sat up once the next thought popped into my head.

How exactly was I supposed to figure out our original family name? How was I supposed to get into Lucian’s house?

I hated having all these questions and no answers.

Then it hit me…

I could ask Abel to take me!

I frowned.

He would ask why… and then after I told him he would tell me no.

But I wouldn’t know until I tried.

It took me a few minutes to work up the courage to ask him.

Before I knew it I was out the door and heading to his room.

What was I going to say to convince him?

Say it is of great importance? Lives depend on it?

That sounded all too cliché.

It was important, to me it was.

I stopped at his door and knocked.

It took a minute before the door opened.

Abel answered the door, but he didn’t look very good.

“Are you alright?” I asked.

He nodded and smiled sheepishly “Sorry, I haven’t been sleeping much.”

I opened my mouth to ask why, but he spoke first.

“So what brings you to my place?” he asked.

To be honest, I was surprised that he was even here. Class was still in session for them.

“I wanted to ask for a favor” I said low.

“What kind of favor?” he asked.

“Can I come in for a minute?”

He nodded and moved out of the way so I could squeeze my way in.

“So?” he asked.

I found myself looking around; there were posters on the wall and all kinds of furniture throughout the room.

“Jade?” Abel asked.

“Sorry” I shook my head “I pretty much already know what you’re going to say, but I’m going to ask anyway.”

He nodded “Alright.”

“Would you be able to take me to Lucian’s house?”

He looked at me for a minute before laughing “Seriously what were you going to ask me?”

I made a face “I was serious.”

“Are you crazy?” he demanded “I wasn’t supposed to take you there the first time.”

“It’s important” I said.

“Define important” he said.

“Important as, I believe he has one of my family heirlooms.”

“He would know if something were missing” he stated “I can’t take you.”

“Abel you don’t understand” I said.

“Then explain it to me” he sat down on his bed to look at me “I’ve got time.”

I groaned “Allison told me she had a book with my family history.”

He cocked his head to the side “Dead Allison?”

I nodded “I know it sounds crazy, but I’ve talked to her.”

“It does sound crazy, but I’ve heard crazier” he stated “So what did she say?”

“I mentioned something about our family curse and she said that she heard of it and that it didn’t start with her, that it was before her time.”

He nodded slowly “And?”

“She had a book with our original family name on it” I stated “She said that if there was a curse, it would definitely be mentioned in there.”

He didn’t look quite convinced.

“I need that book Abel” I said “I need to learn as much as I can about the curse.”

He sighed “I’m not sure about this Jade.”

“If I figure out what the curse is and how it started, I might be able to break it” I said “Wouldn’t that be a good thing?”

He didn’t say anything.

“Abel” I said low “I’m not going to just flow through my time here and abandon you guys.”

“You should.”

“No” I hissed “This is the first place I feel normal.”

He looked at me, he really did look exhausted.

“I was alone in my world, I kept to myself and nobody wanted anything to do with me” I said “Here I am important, people know my name, and I am the furthest thing from alone.”

“Jade” he groaned “You are making it impossible for me to just tell you no, you know that right?”

“I want to know how it all began with my family Abel” I said low “I need to know.”

“Who knows what that thing says” he stated “You don’t even know what Lucian is.”

I made a face “So what is he?”

He smirked “That’s one answer you won’t get out of me.”

“Why not?” I groaned “Nobody will tell me.”

“Because it’s not their place to tell you” he said “Either Lucian has to tell you, or you have to figure it out.”

I frowned, just great… Lucian would never tell me, so it was up to me to figure it out right?

“Maybe if I had the book” I said “Maybe I can figure it out.”

“Not now” he said “Give me time to rest, let me figure out when Lucian won’t be home.”

I nodded, that was actually a good idea. I didn’t want to get caught at his house.

He would know that what I said this morning was a damn lie.

“Okay” I said “I didn’t think that far ahead.”

“I’ll let you know tomorrow when we can go.”

“So you’re really going to take me?” I asked.

He hesitated before nodding “You can’t tell anyone, not even Violet.”

I nodded “I won’t tell anyone. So neither can you.”

He nodded again “Fine by me, but I want to know about the stuff you find out.”

“Of course” I said.

But I don’t think I’d tell him anything really freaky if I read it. Mostly just the family curse thing.

“Thanks” I said.

He smiled “I just hope that for us you really come through.”

To be honest, I wanted nothing more than for them to be free of this kind of life.

“Can I ask you something?” I asked.

He nodded “Sure. What’s up?”

“You’re a Demon, so why are you here with a whole bunch of Vampires?”

My first guess was because of Lucian, but then I remembered Blaze.

“Ever since Victoria was on Trial the laws became much stricter” he said “Everyone was forced to register into the governments database, they know who we are.”

I wasn’t quite sure of his point.

“They took DNA samples, fingerprints, pictures, anyone not registered was automatically categorized as a Vampire until proven otherwise” he stated “They know when we’ve aged or not, they check up on that kind of thing.”

“But I don’t understand, they don’t know that there are other things walking around here” I stated “So do they just say they’re Vampires so they don’t give away their secret?”

“Sort of” he made a face “Most of the documented population is Vampire, the rest are just other species who decided to stay here so they could hide.”

“Hide?” I asked “How could they possibly hide?”

“Humans are afraid to come here” he stated “This is the oldest and largest Vampire school” he made another face “I don’t even know why I say school, it’s a prison.”

I knew it was the first ‘Vampire Detaining Facility’ ever built. I just don’t understand the fear everyone has.

“They think the Vampires will retaliate if they come here” I stated “I know.”

“You grew up in their world, all their hatred being taught to their children and their children’s children” he said “How do you think they see us?”

I didn’t want to say it out loud.

“Come on” he said “What do they tell you in school? What do they tell you that makes every other human hate us so much?”

I sat down this time, across from him.

“So?” he asked.

“I was raised with the idea that Vampires were monsters, somehow they were created” I said “A lot of people believe that the first Vampire crawled out of hell, and that Vampirism is a disease that one cannot cure.”

I could see lines form on his face from that frown.

“And what do you believe?” he asked.

How was I supposed to know?

“Jade?” he asked.

“I honestly don’t know” I shrugged “Everybody was supposedly created, why couldn’t have Vampires been created right along with us?” I asked “I mean now that I know there are really Werewolves, Demons, all of that, it makes more sense now.”

He nodded “Your answer surprised me.”

I made a face “It did? How?”

“I half expected you to agree with the crawling out of hell thing.”

I shook my head “I don’t think Vampires are evil, I just think that everybody survives differently.”

He smirked “This is why you are the one they’re looking to for hope; because you truly are here because you genuinely believe their punishment is unjust.”

I shrugged “Because it really is wrong, I mean it’s not like we’re being thrown in prison for hunting cows or other animals that we eat.”

“Some people don’t really see it that way” he stated “There are a lot of people who want that, but most of the world doesn’t see it that way.”

I just nodded.

“And those people believe that Humans are the dominant species, when in reality they aren’t.”

I agreed with that, but as far as I knew Human population was far higher than any other species here.

Not like it mattered anyway, Humans ruled the world.

“I think you should go before I really get into this conversation” Abel stated.

I nodded “So you’ll let me know tomorrow when we can go?”

He nodded “It may even be tomorrow that we go.”

“Okay” I said “See you tomorrow.”

He walked me to the door and I said my farewell.

I went back to my room only to realize that there was still no one else there.

So what was I going to do? I had about an hour or two to waste.

But I didn’t, I decided to do any work I had for my classes.

When midnight finally came, there was still no Violet.

Either she was with Juliet, or she was dead or in the process of dying.

I shrugged, my sister was fine.

She had her new Vampire stunning toy, she was good to go.

I got myself undressed and ready for bed only to be stopped by the only thing that would turn me to a different course of action.

My stomach growled.

I frowned, so now I had to put pants on and a real shirt.

I did though of course, a black pair of jeans and a band jersey. I even went as far as putting my hair up.

This late night walk was far too familiar for me; I took it later and later that it seemed almost too routine.

I got through the large doors and didn’t hesitate to pack my plate full of whatever looked or even sounded good.

No one was here, and it was almost one in the morning.

I took my time eating; Violet knew I wasn’t going to die any time soon so I was good.

It’s not like I need to rush so my sister would know where I was and that I was alright. Okay now I’m insinuating things and she isn’t even here for me to insinuate them too.

What is wrong with me?

I shook my head in hopes to shake the thought.

Jade, this is your subconscious. GET A HOLD OF YOURSELF WOMAN!

I nodded fiercely.

“You still give yourself those little pep talks I see.”

I found myself glaring at my near empty plate.

He pulled the chair out next to be so he could sit.

“And you’re still here because?” I asked him.

He shrugged “Pretending like I’m a ghost has its perks.”

I just shook my head.

What was he even doing here? He said he wasn’t going to be here.

I glared at him “Can’t you just take the hint?” I hissed “Leave me alone.”

Lucian didn’t seem fazed “And if I say no?”

I stood up and he grabbed me by my arm.

“Let me go” I said seriously.

He did, he released me so I could throw my plate away.

Trying to leave the cafeteria wasn’t as easy.

He blocked my way out.

“Grow up Lucian” I hissed “Everyone has to do it sometime.”

He moved closer to me, his height allowing him to tower over me like a bully.

“Who said I wanted to?” he asked.

“No one did” I stated “Now will you move?”

He didn’t move even a little.

“Lucian I’m serious” I growled.

“What do you think about staying in my room tonight?” he asked low.

“No” for as much as I wanted to say yes, I had to do this.

“And if I said please?”

“Still no” I said.

He still didn’t budge.

“Move” I said low.

“I’m serious Lucian” I growled “I’m so tired of this.”

Finally, I could see a break in that confident, cocky attitude of his.

His gaze went to the side.

“You always do this, and I don’t want to do it anymore” I said “Just go, you don’t want to be here anyway, just stop trying to humor me.”

His expression began to look angry.

“If there really is something wrong with my family” I sighed “Then who are you trying to kid?”

I was hurting him, and it was hurting me too.

I was trying to say random things to make him leave, but the only things I could manage to say were truths.

Was this how I felt? It couldn’t have just been out of the blue that I would say these things; they had to be here somewhere.

“This is a new record” he said low.

I just looked at him.

He stood there looking to the side, but finally his gaze game to rest on me again.

“Go fuck yourself Jade” he said low.

I stood there completely baffled, my heart ached so badly. Everything I told myself about this being for the best was all bullshit wasn’t it?

The look on his face was anger, I knew that face all too well… but the look in his eyes. He was in so much pain, and it was all my fault.

I opened my mouth to speak.

“Don’t you fucking dare” he growled.

No matter what he said to me or how harshly he said it, he never once left.

We just stood there staring at each other.

How much longer was he going to do this to me? I could hardly bare it.

I opened my mouth again only to be silenced.

“Jade!” he shouted.

If I didn’t feel bad enough, I had to hear the pain in his voice now.

I shut my eyes tightly, I couldn’t cry, I couldn’t do it.

The door opened and I opened my eyes to see who it was.

“Fuck off!” Lucian hissed at the new occupant.

They left a lot faster than I thought they would.

He moved closer to me, and my whole body began to shake.

Not once had I been this afraid of him.

When he wrapped his arms around me I gasped.

His arms tightened around me and he buried his face in the side of my neck.

I just stood there, I wanted to hug him so bad… and I did.

I wrapped my arms around him.

“I’m sorry” he murmured.

I didn’t say anything, I just stood there. He was right where I wanted him.

But this didn’t feel right; I was making him feel miserable just so I could feel better?

I was low, but in the end I would save him from this curse.

“If you truly wish me gone” he said pulling back “Then I will go and I won’t come back.”

I just stared at him.

“All you have to do is say the word.”

“Lucian I…” I couldn’t finish.

He just nodded and I stopped him before he could go.

“I’m giving you the space you want” I said “But I never wanted you to disappear.”

He looked confused.

“I just figured that if I was fine that you would be able to do what you needed to without having to worry about me” I said “I didn’t know that this would happen.”

He was quick to wrap his arms around me again; my face was pressed against his chest.

“God damn it Jade” he said low.

“I’m sorry” I said against him “I know I’m horrible, I just thought I might be able to help.”

I felt his lips on the top of my head “I never wanted it to be like that.”

“I’m sorry.”

It seemed like each time I said it I felt worse.

“Stop” he said pulling back enough to cup my face in his hands “It’s my fault.”

I stared up at him, but all I could bring myself to do was rest my hands over his.

“It’s not entirely your fault” I stated “We just don’t listen to each other.”

He smirked “Then listen to this” he pulled his right hand out from under mine to pull my hair out of the messy bun I put it in “Your hair should stay down.”

I glared at him “Not what I meant.”

He locked his hand in my hair and forced my head back a little.

“What the…”

I was cut off by his lips roughly making contact with mine and his hand slowly released my hair.

When he pulled away I could barely breathe.

“Lucian” I said low.

“I have to go now” he interrupted me.

I had to shake my head to make sure this was really happening “You what?”

He placed a quick kiss on my lips “I have to go.”

“Why?” I asked frowning.

“I have a few things I need to take care of.”

“Things like what?” I asked.

“Don’t make me ruin the moment.”

“You already did” I said moving away from him.

He looked at me for a minute “I’ll be gone a while, stay out of trouble.”

I hesitated before nodding.

He looked at me for another minute before just walking out.

I had to sit down; everything felt like it was spinning. Well it was either that or my heart was pounding so fast I wasn’t seeing straight.

For once I would like to spend more than five minutes alone with him.

The day before his death shouldn’t count, that was supposed to be his last day.

I want another day like that, but without the doom and gloom.

I sighed before getting to my feet, it was time to get back to my room, and I was surprisingly more tired than I thought I was.

I woke up to the sound of knocking.

“Jade!” I heard my name “Let me in.”

I sat up to stared at the door confused.

“It’s Abel” he said.

How could I have forgotten that he was supposed to come over?

I forced my covers off me and I rushed to the door to open it.

“Sorry” I murmured “I forgot.”

“You forgot?” he asked like he didn’t believe it.

“I was sleeping and I lost track of time” I said “Sorry.”

“We can’t go today” he said shutting my door.

“Is he there?” I asked.

He shook his head “Blaze is there.”

I made a face “Why the hell is he there?”

“I don’t know” he shrugged “But I want to know why.”

“Go find out” I pointed at me door “And then come back and tell me.”

He looked at me “Are you crazy?”

“I think I was tested” I frowned “I could be.”

“Jade” was all he said.

“It’s okay” I shrugged “You don’t have to go.”

“I’m worried” he admitted “They aren’t telling me anything anymore.”

It was my fault.

“I’m sorry.”

He shook his head “I would much rather be where I am now than in the loop, but I wish they didn’t keep things from me.”

I nodded.

“If it’s important, who knows” he paced the room.

I had to stop him “Breathe” I said low.

He looked at me unsure, but he took that deep breath like I wanted him to.

“What do you think might be happening?” I asked.

He shook his head “I don’t know.”

“Yes you do” I said “Something happened a while back, during Spring Break.”

“What makes you think that has anything to do with what’s going on now?”

“Uh, I don’t know” I said sarcastically “They were from Campus Inferno, where Lucian, Logan, and Blaze are.”

“You’re referring to the Werewolves?” he asked in an amused tone.

“What?” I asked “I thought humans attacked me.”

He made a face “Shit.”

“What aren’t you telling me?!” I hissed.

“Humans did attack you, but they weren’t the only thing out there” he confessed.

I had to sit down.

Part of me felt like I already knew Werewolves were there… in my dream, they surrounded Lucian.

I looked up at Abel “Why were they there?”

“Do you know how many humans die on Spring Break?” he asked.

I shook my head slowly “How many?”

“At each school” he looked at me “About four or five.”

“But?” I asked.

“Here, at Campus Eternal there is always double sometimes triple that.”

Fifteen kids died here each year?

“Is that why the Werewolves were here?” I asked.

He nodded “So the Vampires here would be blamed for killing them.”

“So is there really hatred between Vampires and Werewolves?” I asked “Like in the old books?”

Abel made weird face “Not as much as you’d think.”

“What do you mean?”

“A lot of the older books are right, they do fight” he stated “But they are related species, practically brothers.”

“So they aren’t having their own war while the rest of the world is having one?” I asked “Wouldn’t it be a smart time for the Werewolves to attack the Vampires while they had humans to worry about now that they’ve been exposed?”

He made a face “I’ll be back.”

And just like that he was gone.

“What the hell?”

I was left standing in the middle of the room by myself.

What was I supposed to do in the meantime? Sit here and wait for him to come back?

I found myself walking back and fourth.

What the hell! I couldn’t just sit here and do nothing.

I put on a pair of faded jeans and a plain black shirt.

My short attention span was kicking in; I had to get out of my room.

I found myself walking around not really finding anything.

Not sure what I wanted to do, not sure where I wanted to go either.

I found myself wandering around the main dormitory.

Why was I going to Lucian’s room?

I kept walking and walking until I stopped in front of his door.

Would he still be here? Would Logan be here?

I knocked lightly on the door and looked back and fourth down the hallway.

He said that I had to stay away from him so many times, he was worried for me right?

No one answered.

Wasn’t that what I was silently hoping for? Or did I really want him to open the door and get all mad at me?

I shook my head before knocking louder.

The door opened and my heart sped up.
