At the school, Jade is confronted by Vampires who believe she can save them, but she doesn't think she is strong enough.
There is a man there who everyone is afraid of, he is personally responsible for the death of the last human at Campus Eternal. Even though people see him as wicked and cruel, she believes that he can help her save the Vampires.
The only question is: Is he willing to help her?

21. Prototype Ch. 20 - Pretend

I woke up in the morning to giggling.

“Hello” I groaned “Sleeping.”

“Sorry” I heard Violet say.

“Sorry” Juliet mumbled right after.

I sat up to glare at them.

Juliet smiled “You’re so grumpy in the morning.”

“Yeah” I stated “That tends to happen when I’m kept up by giggling.”

Violet frowned “Sorry.”

“Stop apologizing” I frowned letting my head rest back on my pillow to cover my head.

How long will I have to deal with this?

Another week? Yeah I know it’s been a full week since these two idiots got together, and they’re messing up my sleep!

A hard knock on the door woke me up the rest of the way.

“I got it” Violet said pulling a sweater on.

I didn’t like what I saw next.

“Where is she?”

I knew this man; he was the Mayors’ lap dog.

I sat up “Who exactly?”

“Where is he?” the man demanded.

“Where is who?” I hissed.

“Where are Lucian’s ashes?”

I lost it, I stared blankly at him.

“Where are they?” he growled.

“Hold on” Violet got between us “She’s been here the whole time, how could his ashes just disappear in the first place?”

“That’s what I came here to find out” the man glared at me.

“I didn’t do anything” I stated “He’s dead, if I really wanted his ashes I would have dug him up while he was here.”

He looked confused for a moment “I suppose that would make sense.”

“Why would someone steal them at all?” I asked him.

The man shrugged “We were all positive it was you.”

I frowned “I wouldn’t steal his ashes, they would just sit there.”

He frowned.

“Why did you guys take his ashes in the first place, they were fine here.”

“Classified” he stated.

“Well you are accusing me of stealing it, so tell me” I said.

“They were orders” he shrugged “I don’t know why.”

“Who wanted them?” Violet hissed.

“Who do you think?” the man spat back.

“The President?” she asked.

The man shook his head “The President doesn’t care about some dumb Vampires ashes, the Mayor wanted it as a trophy, now they’re gone.”

“He’s not stupid” I hissed.

“My bad, all that matters, is that the ashes are missing, have you guys heard anything?”

“Why would we tell you?” Juliet asked.

He glared at her “Stay out of this bloodsucker.”

“Be nice” I said low.

“Why should we tell you?” Violet asked.

“Because” the man said “At least you’d know where they were.”

I got to my feet “Quite frankly I’m glad that the Mayor doesn’t have them anymore. That man is an ass who only looks out for himself.”

He cocked his head to the side “Be that as it may, we are both looking for the same thing. Are we not?”

“No we are not” I stated “You are looking, we are wondering.”

“I don’t have time for this.”

“Then leave, go find the ashes” I said “Good riddance.”

He slammed the door on his way out.

“Jade I’m so sorry” Violet said low.

I shook my head “At least that man doesn’t have him.”

Juliet nodded “Maybe Logan got them.”

“Logan?” I asked.

“Logan was talking about getting them back, maybe he really did” Juliet said excitedly.

I hope so.

I found myself going back to my bed.

“Really Jade?” Violet laughed “You’re going back to sleep?”

I nodded “I need more sleep if this day is going to continue.”

Both of the girls nodded letting me curl up into a ball.

I stared as the golden poppy in my hand died.

The bright gold faded before turning black, and after it turned black it withered.

“You came.”

I turned around quickly to see Lucian.

My heart was beating so fast, I couldn’t deny how happy I was to see him.

He didn’t move he just watched me.

“Why didn’t you just lie to me?” I asked.

“Why would you want me to lie to you?” he asked “You get mad when I’m not honest, but now you want me to lie?”

I nodded.

“About what?” he asked.

“If you knew you were going to die, why didn’t you just lie and tell me you loved me?”

He didn’t say anything.

“Can you tell me now?” I asked.

I gazed up at him as he shook his head.

“You can’t tell me you love me even in my dreams?” I asked “How sad.”

“I can’t.”

“Please” I begged.

He shook his head “I can’t Jade.”

“Do you really even like me at all? Or was I just a distraction from everything?”

“You wont like my answer” he stated.

“You have got to be kidding” I laid back in the field of poppies.

“You can’t just expect me to say those words” he said low.

“I don’t see why you can’t” I hissed “You died, you are in my dreams.”

“I guess you do have a point” he shrugged.

“Then I can ask you to kiss me and you will?”

He shook his head.

“Really?” I demanded “Can’t you just cater to my ego and kiss me damn it!”

“I really wish it were that simple.”

“It is” I stated “You lean down, hold my face in your hands and kiss me.”

“In your dreams huh?” he smirked “I can’t say that, because that’s exactly where I am.”

“Please” I pleaded low “Just one kiss?”

He sighed “Just one.”

I nodded refusing to sit up.

“You’re really making me go down there aren’t you?”

I nodded “Come to me.”

He stood at my feet before dropping to his knees in front of me.

I forced myself up a little, not giving him a chance to kiss me just yet.

He crawled forward a little and I backed up making his lips miss.

A low growl came from him as he grabbed my legs pulling me forward knocking me completely back.

He pressed his body down on mine hard as he hovered his lips centimeters above mine.

“Lucian” I groaned.

“Beg” he said low.

“Please” I begged trying to raise my head so I could kiss him.

He drew his head back to smirk at me.

He cupped my face in his hands to stare down at me.

“Kiss me” I whimpered.

And to my surprise he did.

His lips touched down softly on mine, pulling back to kiss me harder.

I stared wide eyed at my ceiling.

I turned my head to see Violet.

Part of me was devastated; I had him right where I wanted him.

“Why did you wake me up?” I groaned.

“You’ve been asleep all day; I was thinking we could go get something to eat.”

I glared at here “Did you now?”

“Of course” she smiled “You should eat something.”

I glared at her again “And if I said I’m not hungry?”

“Then I would take you with me anyway” she shrugged.

“Well I don’t want to go.”

“Well you are going to go” she smiled pulling me up “Get dressed.”

I groaned as I pulled on a pair of sweat pants, I wasn’t even going to try to look appropriate.

“Really Jade?” Violet asked.

I nodded “Not caring today.”

“Fine by me” she shrugged.

I followed her out of the room to the cafeteria.

It was late, it reminded me of the times when I would always come out late to see Lucian.

He couldn’t be dead! He escaped from the cross and he was here!

I would see him tonight, and I will be happy.

I took a soda from the fridge and I sat at the table next to Violet.

“Now are you glad I made you come out?” Violet asked.

I shook my head “I’m only here to make you happy.”

“Well make me happier and act like you’re happy.”

I stared at the can in front of me “Not everyone has a fairy tale life Violet” I shrugged.

Why did I want to cry so badly?

“What are you talking about?” she asked “You still have to try; you can’t just give up because Lucian’s dead.”

“It’s my pity party and I’ll bitch if I want to” I stated taking another drink.

I heard laughs but they stopped once they entered the cafeteria.

Then the whispering started.

“Is it true?”

“Did he really?”

“I don’t believe that.”

I glared at them “If you’ve got something to say, say it to my face.”

“Jade” Violet warned.

One of the girls stopped right next to me “We weren’t talking about you.”

I looked up at her “Then what were you talking about?”

“Lucian” she shrugged “From what I hear you already know.”

I looked at her funny “What are you talking about?”

She looked confused “You don’t know?”

“Obviously I don’t” I stated “What are you talking about?”

“I hear that somebody stole Lucian’s ashes” she shrugged “And a few of the girls I talk to think it was you.”

“How could I possibly have taken them?” I asked “Me being human and all.”

She shrugged “That was my argument, but humans are capable of many things.”

“Well I didn’t take them” I stated.

“Well then who do you think did?”

“I don’t know” I shrugged.

“Well if you hear anything let someone know, gossip travels fast” she smiled “And I’d like to hear the news.”

I nodded “If you hear something you’ll let me know?”

She nodded before walking back over to her friends before leaving.

Why did they even come in here?

“It’s still hard to believe that no one has tried to kill you yet” Violet said “Oh wait, they have.”

I glared at her “Can you just not talk while you eat?”

“Nope” she smiled before taking another bite.

I waited for her to finish eating before we headed back to our room where she fell asleep and I stayed up.

No matter how many times I closed my eyes he was the only one I saw.

God I wished so much that I could just open them for once and he was there.

“Go to sleep” I heard Violet say.

“That’s easy for you to say” I hissed.

“Try harder” she hissed back.

She doesn’t understand… Juliet loves her too. Lucian couldn’t even lie and tell me he loved me in my dreams.

What was so wrong with me that he couldn’t do that?

“Jade please” Violet sat up to look at me “I’ll do anything, just please sleep.”

“Bring him back” I said.

“Jade, I wish I could” she said low “But we both saw him die, it’s impossible.”

“Then I guess you can’t do anything.”

“I’ll do anything I am humanly capable of doing” she said.

“Sleep with me?” I asked her low.

“Are you sure?”

I nodded “Like old times.”

She pulled her blanket off before getting up to lay with me. She held me tightly against her chest; I could hear her heart beating.

When we were young I used to have nightmares… of what happened to me. Violet would always crawl into bed with me and hum some song that was in her head until I fell asleep. Without fail my nightmares would scatter, but eventually they made their way back to me.

I sat in the cafeteria, there was no one else here and the lights outside were so bright that the colored windows glowed.

“You’re here.”

I turned around in my seat to see Lucian.

“Where am I?” I asked.

“Another dream” he shrugged.

I was so used to seeing the poppies now that this was foreign territory.

“We really left off badly last time.”

I stood up; I was wearing the same thing I fell asleep in.

“Why is it that you’re more lady like when you go to sleep than you normally are?”

I glared “Because” I stated.

“Because isn’t a reason Jade.”

“When are you coming back?” I asked him.

He shook his head “I’m not.”

“Don’t say stuff like that” I said “Just lie to me and say soon.”

He didn’t say anything.

He stood right in front of me “I will come to see you soon.”

“Promise?” I asked.

“I promise” he placed a kiss on my forehead.

When I opened my eyes all I saw was same ceiling I’ve woken up to since I first came to Campus Eternal.

“Violet?” I asked.

“I’m right here” she rolled over to hug me again.

I hugged her back tightly.

“What happened?”

I shook my head. That was worse than any nightmare. Lucian making another promise he couldn’t keep.

“Jade?” she asked.

The knock at the door was the only thing that stopped me from answering her question.

Violet was slow to get up, but she pulled the door open and it was Abel.

“Abel?” I asked.

He smiled lightly, his eyes were red. That could only mean that Blaze made him cry.

“Remember when you said that I could talk to you about anything?” he sat down on my bed.

I nodded “You always can.”

“Blaze left” he laid down on my bed.

I scooted over so that he could have some room.

“What do you mean he left?” Violet asked.

“He went with Logan to Campus Inferno.”

“Why?” I asked.

“I don’t know, neither one of them would tell me” he stated “But knowing them it has something to do with Lucian.”

“Why Lucian?” Violet asked.

He sat up and looked at me “I didn’t want to say it before, but I feel like I have the right to be mad at him. Don’t I?”

“You do” I stated “But what about Lucian?”

“The reason Blaze went off on you before” he stated.

“Over Lucian you mean?”

He nodded.

“So?” Violet asked.

He was definitely stalling.

He bit his lip “The reason Blaze refused to even consider my love, was because he was hoping that one day Lucian would wake up and decide that he didn’t want to chase after your family.”

“Are you saying that Blaze has a thing for Lucian?” Violet asked.

He nodded slowly “He always has, but Lucian refuses to see him like that.”

“So you were kind of like the second choice?”

He nodded “But he knows that my love will always be for him.”

“What an asshole” I hissed “You saved his life and he is still chasing after Lucian?”

“You’re still chasing after him too” Violet stated.

“Where am I chasing him to?” I asked “I haven’t left, I haven’t killed myself. Where could I possibly be following him to?”

They both just stared at me.

“And one more thing” Abel said.

“What is it?” Violet asked.

“You are going to be so mad at me” he said low “I’m so sorry Jade/”

“Why would I be mad at you?” I asked.

“Lucian isn’t dead.”

I stared blankly at him.

“Don’t tell her things like that” Violet hissed “You know what she’s been through.”

“It’s the truth” he stated “That’s the only explanation for all this.”

“So you aren’t sure if he’s alive or not?” I asked him.

He shook his head “I don’t know for sure, but…”

I was quick to jump off my bed and close myself in the bathroom.

“Jade” Abel called.

I locked the door and turned the sink on and just sat on the floor.

“Jade” Violet called.

Who really knows Lucian?

What is he? Why would they take his ashes to another campus?

I sighed; I really didn’t want to deal with this.

“I’m sorry” Abel said “Why else would Blaze just leave me like that?”

“Blaze is an asshole who only thinks about himself” I stated “You deserve better, and he needs to quit being such a dick.”

There wasn’t a sound coming from the other side of the door.

I took a deep breath feeling like I was releasing some of my irritation.

After a minute I turned the water off and opened the door.

Abel sat on the floor staring at the ground.

“You’re right” he mumbled “But love makes you over look all of the bad things, why else would you still love Lucian?”

“I don’t know” I shrugged “He saved me.”

“It’s in your blood to fall in love with him” he stated “It’s your family curse.”

“Obviously” I stated.

“I mean it’s a real curse Jade” he stated.

“So all the girls in my family are supposed to fall in love with him?” I asked “Because clearly Violet isn’t, so what?”

“I don’t know why she isn’t” he shook his head “But every girl in your family fell in love with him, and all of them didn’t love him enough to stay with him.”

“So I’ve heard” I stated “But I’m not like them.”

“Just save everyone the drama Jade, leave it alone.”

“Save everyone the drama?” I hissed “Don’t you remember what you came here for?”

He glared at me as he forced himself up “Well sorry if I consider you and your sister my only real friends.”

“Real friends don’t throw insults that hurtful at each other” I stated.

“You started it” he hissed.

“No you did!” I shouted “You lied to me, and then you blamed me!”

He opened his mouth to speak but closed it.

“You’re one of my best friends too” I stated “But Blaze really is hurting you, next time you need to tell him that.”

“I’m sorry” he said low “But I’ve tried.”

“Try harder” I reached for both of his hands “If he loves you as much as he says he does, then he will try to make it up to you.”

He nodded “I guess.”

“No more guessing” Violet said “Knowing feels a little better.”

I nodded “I couldn’t agree more.”

There was another knock at the door.

Violet looked over at it before looking at me.

I walked to the door and opened it.

It was the girl from earlier “So I have some good news for you” she smiled.

“Good news?” I asked “Did you find out who took them?”

“So I have this friend at campus Inferno, and guess what I just heard?”

I shrugged “What?”

“Lucian fucking Cross is walking around, not actually dead” she shouted gripping my shoulders.

“Are they sure?” I asked.

“He’s been walking around for a week” she stated “I don’t know why I just found out about it today.”

“A week?” I asked “How?”

She shrugged “I don’t know but whatever happened, happened.”

“How long has Logan been gone?” I asked.

“He left over a week ago” Abel stated.

“When did Blaze leave?” I asked.

“Last night.”

“So then he knew” I said low “Logan must have done something.”

The girl shrugged “All I know, is that Lucian is the man.”

“Thanks for telling me.”

“No problem” she shrugged “I should probably go now, I’m supposed to be meeting the girls at the cafeteria.”

“Bye” I said “Have fun.”

“Later” she walked off.

The room was dead quiet; you could hear a needle drop.

“Jade” Violet said low.

“Why didn’t he come back?” I asked.

He promised he would come see me soon… in my dream.

“I don’t know” she mumbled.

“Abel” I turned to look at him “You can go find out right?”

He looked at me before shaking his head “Blaze said not to go.”

“Ignore him” I hissed “We just found out that Lucian is alive and kicking, go find out if it’s true.”

He hesitated “Alright.”

He got up and made his way to the door.

“You’re going now?” Violet asked.

He nodded “I will be back.”

We watched him walk out and I still wasn’t sure what to do.

He was alive, and he didn’t come back to me. Maybe he really was running away from me.

I just laid down on my bed.

“Please” I said low “Just let me sleep.”

I heard her breathing for a few minutes before she just walked to her own bed.

He really didn’t want to be with me?

I closed my eyes and buried my face into my pillow. I couldn’t cry.

Violet would hear me if I did, and she would know why.

Most importantly, if I cried… I would know that I cried, regardless if Violet heard me or not.

And before I knew it, all my thoughts of him came flooding back.

When I first met him he kept saying ‘Humans are more trouble than they’re worth.’

That was also the last thing he said to me.

I rolled over to look at Violet sitting there looking at me.

“You know you’re crying right?” she asked me low.

I felt my face, and sure enough my cheeks were wet.

“It’s alright” she said “Let it out.”

I closed my eyes again; I felt the tears about to come harder once she said that.

“I’d probably be crushed if I were you” she mumbled “But that’s the difference between you and me”

I opened my eyes again to look at her, and the tears fell.

“You were always stronger than me” she smiled lightly “If he doesn’t come back then he is an idiot and he doesn’t deserve you.”

Even though I know that was meant to make me feel better, I still couldn’t stop myself from sobbing.

“I’m really sorry Jade.”

I got up and made my way over to her bed with my blanket, and again I snuggled up next to her until I fell asleep.

I kept hearing this strange ticking sound. I had to sit up so I could find the source.

In the center of the poppy field was a large grandfather clock, both the small hand and the big hand were on the twelve.

I stood up to get a better look at the clock, the numbers started to run red.

I wiped my hand across the numbers and my hand carried the color to the edge.

“You’re here.”

Every fiber of my being was on fire, I was pissed.

I wouldn’t even allow myself to look at him.

“You lied to me” I growled.

“Isn’t that what you wanted me to do?” he asked standing next to me.

“No” I stated “I wanted you tell me you loved me, not lie about everything else.”

“You’re contradicting yourself now Jade.”

I turned to glare at him “You told me you were going to die, and you did, but you are alive.”

He just looked at me.

“Talk to me” I demanded “How are you alive?”

“Who said I was?” he asked as if I wasn’t supposed to know.

“It’s called a rumor, and you and I both know how accurate they are in the world we come from.”

“The world I come from” he corrected “The one you were forced into.”

“Again” I said “Our world.”

He shrugged “Then if I’m alive, where am I?” he asked as if I would never figure it out.

“Campus inferno” I stated “People have seen you walking around.”

He looked back at the clock “Where did all the numbers go?”

You could still see the red smears.

I showed him my hand, but the word LIAR was bleeding.

He grabbed my arm roughly “What did I say about this?”

I snatched my arm back “Not like it matters or anything, but last time I checked you were dead.”

He frowned “I guess you’re right.”

“Really?” I hissed “You aren’t going to tell me that you’re alive?”

“Why should I?” he asked “Clearly you are breaking promises.”
I glared harder at him “You never kept your promise, and who said that I did this?”

He pulled my other hand forward to stare at them both.

“Wake up” he said.

“No” I hissed.

“Wake up” he growled.

I just stared at him.

“Jade, just do it” he hissed.

I opened my mouth to speak, but my head just started pounding.

Before I knew it I was awake and I could hear Violet and Juliet giggling again.

“It’s sad right?” I heard Violet ask “She hasn’t done this since she was little.”

She was talking about me?

I rolled over to look at them on the floor; they were playing a card game.

“Hey” Juliet smiled.

“Hey” I mumbled getting up.

“Where are you going?” Violet asked.

“Food” I mumbled.

I haven’t eaten in… I don’t even know how long.

I got dressed and walked outside, she thought that I was going to the Cafeteria, but I was going somewhere else.

I walked to Abel’s room, and once I got there I sat by the door and I didn’t move.

All I had to do was wait for him to come back and tell me the truth.

Was Lucian really dead?
