What if one day you found out that the monsters you thought only existed in stories, were real?
Years after the discovery of Vampires, seventeen year old Jade and her twin sister Violet are sent to the very first Vampire Containment Facility. Also known as Campus Eternal.
At the school, Jade is confronted by Vampires who believe she can save them, but she doesn't think she is strong enough.
There is a man there who everyone is afraid of, he is personally responsible for the death of the last human at Campus Eternal. Even though people see him as wicked and cruel, she believes that he can help her save the Vampires.
The only question is: Is he willing to help her?

19. Prototype Ch. 19 - Hey Juliet (Pt. 1)

It was hard, every moment of every day.

It’s been two weeks now since I watched Lucian burn alive.

I keep having these nightmares that wake me up in tears. Violet said that I was screaming the other night, and that she just couldn’t wake me up.

It really was hard. I haven’t really been going to any of my classes either, I feel like such a hermit. I tried not to sleep, but right now it was beginning to prove just how difficult staying up for days really is.

“Jade” I heard a low voice from next to me.

I looked over to see Zero.

“What?” I asked.

“You really don’t look so good” he said looking at me.

“I know that” I frowned.

“Have you not been sleeping?” he asked.

I glared at him now “I’m just fine thanks.”

“You really do look kind of pale.”

“Can you please just back off?” I hissed.

“Wait until I tell Ariel” he said shrugging “You miss him, that’s why you aren’t taking care of yourself.”

“What’s the use?” I asked “I don’t care anymore.”

“You should” he said turning his chair to face me “There are a lot more Vampires looking to you and your sister for some sort of hope.”

I stared at him “Why?”

“Let’s just say that Lucian wasn’t a complete dirt bag.”

I glared “Explain.”

“Everyone else here who did kill a human got off the hook for it.”

“How?” I hissed.

“He said that he did it, he basically saved a lot of Vampires.”

I stared down at the paper in front of me, it was for another photography project, and the only person I wanted to photograph was lying in the school’s graveyard.

“Jade?” he asked.

“Yeah?” I asked back not looking at him.

“Does anyone else know how you felt about Lucian?”

I shook my head “No one.”

“I guess I can’t just tell everyone then” he shrugged “But I’m sorry that you had to watch it.”

I nodded “He told me not to look.”

“You talked to him?” he asked confused.

I nodded “When he first found out that he was going to be executed, this was before the Mayor had anyone grab him.”

He nodded slowly “Alright.”

My gaze went back to the paper in front of me.

‘Photography Project: Same Sex Love’

I read the details, and I knew right away who I wanted to photograph, Violet and Juliet.

I had to pick two people, who were both the same gender as me. Okay I got the couple; I just needed to get them to take a picture together. Okay I needed them to take several pictures, and I needed them to be like lovers.

I had something to keep my mind off Lucian now. All I had to do was focus on getting Violet and Juliet together.

The bell rang and I went right for Art. This class just wasn’t the same without Lucian.

I sat in my normal seat next to Monica.

“Hey” she whispered.

I turned to see who she meant, but it was me.

“I’m sorry” she looked down for a second “You know for being such a bitch and everything, but I just wanted to let you know that I got your back okay?”

I stared at her “Thanks.”

“Lucian only told us to do one thing before he died, and that was to look out for you, I didn’t know why at first, but I think I figured it out.”

“Yeah I bugged him all the time, so he had to help somehow.”

She looked at me confused “Maybe.”

“But I mean it, thanks.”

She nodded “Bradley is here to look out for you too.”

I just nodded, the two Vampires that were trying to kill me day one were helping me now. Maybe I should just get over this pity party and actually try. Lucian died for something, I need to save them, and I need to let the world know that the Vampires aren’t that bad. They are people too, they are just stronger and they have to survive too.

I saw Juliet walk in the room.

“Juliet” I called.

She looked up at me and smiled.

I waved her over to me and pulled the bar stool next to me out.

She sat happily.

“So I have a favor to ask” I said.

“What kind of favor?”

“I have this photography project that I need help with.”

“What kind of project?” she asked.

God she asked so many questions.

“Well” I said slowly as I pulled the paper out to hand it to her.

She looked it over before her face went bright red “But I don’t understand.”

“You are one of the few girl friends I have here, and I can’t use myself.”

“Who else were you planning to use?”

I looked at her for a minute “I’m not sure; who should I photograph with you?”

She smiled “How about Violet?”

I smiled this time “So you and Violet huh?”

Her face went red again “I don’t know what you’re talking about; I just… please don’t tell her.”

I smiled wider; this was going to be awesome.

“I won’t tell her I promise, I just need your help.”

She nodded “I’ll help.”

“Thanks, I just need to ask Violet to help me too.”

She nodded before turning nervously to her blank piece of paper.

“Alright class” Miss Shelby began “We are going to draw the first object that comes to our minds.”

I wasn’t even sure what I was thinking.

“Just place the graphite on the paper and see where it leads you.”

Everybody seemed to like this idea and started to draw.

I looked over at Juliet to see her hands close at her side.

“What’s wrong?” I asked her.

“I shouldn’t draw the first thing that came to my mind.”

“Just do what Miss Shelby said, put your pencil on the paper and just start drawing.”

She smiled before nodding.

Now I had to take my own advice, I pressed my pencil to the paper and I just started to draw.

“Alright class, it’s time to walk around the room to see what everyone else drew”

I stared at my picture before staring in horror.

“Is that a cross?” Juliet asked me “On fire?”

It was a cross; it was the one Lucian was chained to.

“I’m sorry” Juliet mumbled “We’re all going to miss him.”

I stared at her “Really?”

“I know I will” she forced me to stand up and walk around the room with the rest of the kids “He saved me.”

I continued to stare “What?”

“Yeah, a lot of the Vampires here are only here because Lucian saved them.”

“He saved them?”

She nodded “He got to them before the human government did, he told them to hide in the schools.”

“Wait, isn’t everyone here registered though?”

She shook her head “I’m not.”

“Oh wow” I mumbled “So they don’t know who you are?”

She shook her head “Lucian saved me, like I said.”

“Will you tell me what happened?”

She smiled “Yeah, after class.”

We took our seats again, and I just managed to stare at the picture. Lucian wasn’t on it; no one was, so why did I see it start to come alive.

The flames were burning so hot, I could barely breathe.

The cross was getting darker as the flames threatened to completely engulf it.

A loud scream broke out and I was staring at my picture, it was on fire.

I forced myself away from the paper.

“You pyro bitch” Monica hissed.

“Really?” I demanded “We just had a moment and you go and spoil it.”

Everyone was looking at me confused. I was confused, what the hell just happened?

“Alright” Miss Shelby said “Calm down, it was just a concentration fire, it’s fine.”

What kind of fire?

“Concentration fire” Juliet said from next to me “It happens, I don’t know how you did it, but I know how it can happen.”

“How?” I asked confused.

“Well normally Demons are the ones that do it, but it happens when you are looking at something as strongly as you were, hence the name concentration fire.”

I nodded slowly “But I’m not a Demon or anything like that.”

“I know, but still it can happen I guess.”

“Okay” I said a little awkwardly

“Put your stuff up” Miss Shelby said.

And we did, I put the pencils and charcoal back.

“I’ll come by your room after classes are over, don’t forget to ask Violet” she said.

I nodded right before the bell rang; it was time for us to go.

I sat in my room waiting for Violet.

Yeah we had music together, and yes we had self defense but Ariel wanted to talk to her about something.

I was a little worried, I mean yeah I missed Lucian and all that, but I just wish that I didn’t hurt as much as I did. I know he must have suffered, but his pain ended, mine is still coming in hard.

It feels like people are taking turns hitting me in the stomach with a baseball bat.

I could hear keys as the door opened “Hey Jade” Violet smiled.

“I need a favor” I said.

She looked at me funny “What kind of favor?”

“Help with my project” I handed her the paper.

She looked at me as she took it, her face never went red she just looked surprised.

“So?” I asked.

“You want my help with this?”

I nodded “I already asked Juliet.”

She went red this time.

“She said she would, I already told her that you were going to help me.”

“Fine, I’ll help, only because I love you.”

I laughed “And because I got your crush to go along with it.”

She smiled “That too.”

“Alright, so it says that it’s due on Tuesday” I informed.

“So what exactly are we supposed to be doing?” she asked me.

“Well you guys are supposed to make it seem like you’re dating, so I want to see some love.”

She glared at me “Specify that for me.”

“Well” I pretended to think “I want you guys to kiss” I grinned evilly “And I want you to huddle half naked together.”

Her face was on fire “Are you kidding?”

I shook my head “I just need to find clothes for you guys to wear.”

“You will do no such thing.”

I gave her that ‘oh really?’ look.

“I’m serious Jade” she said “I won’t let you embarrass me.”

“Who said I was going to embarrass you?” I demanded “This is for my project, and I won’t let you mess it up.”

She looked confused “I’m confused now, are you doing this for me or for yourself?”

I stared at her “I’m doing the project for me.”

She looked mad.

“But I’m having Juliet in there for you.”

She stared at me for a minute “So what should I do?”

“Just let me handle it.”

“I can’t” she blurted.

“Violet” I said slowly “I will handle this alright, I’m the only one that can direct both of you.”

She frowned “But what if she doesn’t like me?”

I shook my head “Violet you won’t know until you try.”

Of course I was going to leave out the part that Juliet already gave away the fact that she liked Violet, but who am I to tell her that?

She made that sad face I hate.

“Don’t worry Violet” I said “I really do know what I’m doing.”

She didn’t budge.

“I need something to do” I admitted “I miss him so much, but I can’t stop thinking about him. I need something to take my mind off him.”

She stared at me “I’m so sorry Jade.”

“Just please, let me get overwhelmed in planning this, I just need something to do.”

She nodded “Alright, just let me know what you want me to do.”

I nodded “Thanks.”

She smiled lightly right before there was a small knock on the door.

“Are you expecting someone?” she asked me low.

I nodded “Will you get it?”

She nodded and opened the door.

“Hi” I heard Juliet greet Violet.

“Hi” Violet smiled.

“So are you going to help Jade with her project?”

Violet nodded “Yeah, are you?”

Juliet smiled “Yeah.”

“Don’t be nervous you guys” I said “We’re all friends here.”

They both looked at me confused.

“We’re not doing it now are we?” Violet asked.

I shook my head “I’m saving the actual picture taking for Saturday, I just need you guys to be ready on Friday.”

They looked at me.

“You know Friday is tomorrow right?” Juliet asked.

I had to think about that for a minute “I knew that” I looked to the side to avoid their gazes.

“You had no idea” Violet said.

“Okay so?” I asked “But we have to get the stuff done on Saturday.”

“So what do you want us to do?” Juliet asked.

“I just want you to bring an extra pair of clothes; I think you should stay here until we are done with the pictures” I looked at her for a minute “It that’s okay with you?”

She nodded slowly “I can do that.”

“Also, I want to hear the story” I said.

Juliet nodded.

“What story?” Violet asked.

“Lucian wasn’t as bad as everyone led you to believe” Juliet stated.

“You shouldn’t do this to her” Violet said “She isn’t really doing great right now.”

“She asked me to come over to tell her how Lucian saved me.”

Violet stared at her “He what?”

She nodded “He saved my life a couple years back.”
“What did he do?” Violet asked.

I couldn’t help but notice how interested she suddenly got.

“Well” Juliet sat down next to me and pat the spot next to her for Violet.

Violet sat down next to her and stared at her.

“It was five years ago” she stated “And I was on the run with my brother and his friend.”

“I didn’t know you had a brother” Violet stated.

“I don’t anymore” she said low.

I stared at her “I’m sorry.”

She shrugged “Lucian did his best to save all of us, but I was the only one who managed to get away.”

“So what happened?” Violet asked.

“Vampires were turning against each other, they began to feed off their own kind so that the humans wouldn’t know where they were” she stated “My brother wasn’t so lucky.”

I stared at her “Oh my god.”

She nodded “Lucian just showed up out of nowhere and killed them, but it was after my brother was bled dry.”

“So is Lucian a Vampire?” Violet asked.

Juliet stared at her “No.”

She looked at me “What is he then?”

She shook her head “I can’t tell you.”

Violet looked offended “Why not?”

“I promised that I would keep it a secret.”

I shrugged “He wouldn’t tell me either.”

“What they hell?” Violet hissed.

“I’m just sorry that Lucian had to die, there are so many Vampires out there that are lower than dirt in comparison.”

I nodded.

“I never got to see his nice side” Violet stated.

“I rarely saw it” I said “But it was there.”

“He is just being careful” Juliet stated “His biggest fear is being alone for all eternity.”

I sort of knew that, I mean he said that he didn’t want to watch everyone he cared about die around him. I just didn’t know that that was what he feared the most.

“But he doesn’t have to be afraid of that anymore” Violet stated.

Juliet only nodded.

I felt a hard pull on my chest; he was really never coming back.

“Maybe I should go” Juliet said “I will see you both tomorrow.”

“See you tomorrow” I said.

Violet walked her to the door and as soon as she shut it I broke.

I rolled over and buried my face in my pillow.

“I’m sorry” she said low “I didn’t mean to say it like that.”

“He didn’t have to be alone” I sobbed “I begged him to run away with me.”

She was silent.

“He wouldn’t go with me, he wouldn’t choose me.”

“You heard all those Vampires” she said “He saved so many of them.”

I just wiped my eyes trying to stop crying.

“He at least told you how he felt right?”

I shook my head “He said he didn’t feel that way.”

I turned around to look at her, she looked confused.

“But didn’t he kiss you?”

I nodded “I was probably just something to pass the time for him.”

“Don’t you dare say that” she said.

“Why?” I demanded “He has been with all the girls in our family.”

She shook her head “Just because he was in those pictures doesn’t mean that they were together.”

I shook my head “It means he was trying to get back at the girl who turned him in, by haunting her family, making them fall for him then he leaves them broken and alone.”

“Is that really what you’re going to keep telling yourself?”

I stared at her “What should I say?”

“He really liked you, maybe even loved you” she said low “He kissed you, he followed you everywhere, he saved you.”

The tears started to fall again.

“He spent his last night with you, he could have refused” she mumbled “And I got your old art project back.”

“What?” I asked “What project?”

“You weren’t in class for a while, so Miss Shelby asked me to give it to you, but I couldn’t I knew that if you saw it you would cry” she looked down “Because she gave me Lucian’s to give to you too.”

I stared at her “Do you have them with you now?”

She hesitated before nodding “Why didn’t you tell me about that?”

“That was when Ariel told me not to talk to him; I couldn’t say no, Miss Shelby paired us up.”

“Did you have sex with him?” she asked me quickly.

I stared confused “No, why would I have?”

She walked to her backpack and pulled the pictures out “Why else would you be naked on his bed?”

I glared up at her “Because it was supposed to be a nude drawing.”

She blushed “I’m sorry.”

“Didn’t you see the one I drew?”

She nodded “That’s kind of why I thought…”

“You are such a dork” I said.

“So?” she asked.

“So what?” I hissed.

“Did you see it?”

I glared at her “Are you serious?”

She nodded “Yeah, did you?”

I shook my head “I didn’t see it”

She frowned “Maybe you should have asked to see it before he died.”

I glared again “Again, are you serious?”

She shrugged “Now you’re curious.”

I shook my head “I’ll be back okay.”

“Are you going to go visit him?”

I nodded “I won’t be that long.”

She nodded “Take your time.”

I put my shoes on and walked out of the room.

Everything seemed so… bad?

I walked towards the graveyard before stopping at the small gate.

What would I say? Could he really hear me?

I pulled the gate door open to step inside.

The headstones were so close together, which could only mean that there really were no bodies, only ashes.

I walked through all of them until I saw it. I knew right away it was his because of how disrespected it was.

My heart ached for him.

I sat right in front of it and stared at the words carved into it.

‘Here lies the remains of Lucian Gregory Cross, good riddance.’

Again I started to cry.

“Why?” I mumbled “Why do they all hate you so much?”

I wish so much that he would say something, but there was nothing but the wind.

I stared at the small stone, I picked up the nearest rock and I crossed out ‘good riddance’ before looking at it again.

If I could tell him anything what would it be?

I wrote RIP above the scribbles. I really did want him to rest in peace.

I couldn’t help but think about Juliet, she misses him too.

The rock seemed to get heavier in my hand as I thought about it.

‘He will be missed by many’ I wrote.

And I slowly leaned in to place a kiss on the top of his headstone.

“Any minute now would be a good time to come back” I said low.

But again, there was no response.

I was going to sit here until I saw him again. He was going to come back and he was going to finally admit that he loved me, and we would run off into the sunset.

At least that’s what I kept telling myself, but around the fourth hour of me sitting there I wasn’t so sure anymore.

It was dark, and I couldn’t see anything.

There was this weird sound, almost like running water.

I sat up and light burst around me, I was in the field of golden poppies again.

Why was I here?

I looked around and I couldn’t see much beyond the small glowing circle around me.

I stood up and I started walking, the poppies in my path lit up.

“Hello?” I called.

No response.

I looked around until I spotted something in the field.

“Hello?” I called again.

They didn’t move.

I made my way to where they were laying. They still didn’t move.

As I got closer I felt myself getting scared. Who the hell was that?

“Hello?” I asked low.

I knelt down a little bit away to lean over.

I poked their back.

A loud growl scared me and knocked me back.

Something ripped its way out of the man’s back, large red wings.

I stared until the rest of the creature came out; it was a dark grey color with bright red eyes.
