Prototype

What if one day you found out that the monsters you thought only existed in stories, were real?
Years after the discovery of Vampires, seventeen year old Jade and her twin sister Violet are sent to the very first Vampire Containment Facility. Also known as Campus Eternal.
At the school, Jade is confronted by Vampires who believe she can save them, but she doesn't think she is strong enough.
There is a man there who everyone is afraid of, he is personally responsible for the death of the last human at Campus Eternal. Even though people see him as wicked and cruel, she believes that he can help her save the Vampires.
The only question is: Is he willing to help her?

18. Prototype Ch. 18 - Just in Time

I woke up feeling cold.
Something just felt so different now that I was back at Campus Eternal.
“Jade” I heard my name.
I rolled over to face Violet.
“Can you sleep?”
“Not any more” I frowned.
“Did I wake you up?”
I shook my head and sat up “No, it wasn’t you.”
She smiled lightly “How are you?”
I looked at her before smiling weird “I’m alright, how about you?”
“You know, I don’t even know why I was mad at you for telling mom I liked girls.”
I didn’t like where this conversation was going.
“I’d eventually have to tell her anyway, it was just easier to have you do it, now she has time to think about it.”
I didn’t think that she was going to appreciate me telling mom, I mean I only told mom because I was pissed at her.
“Are you sure?” I asked her.
She nodded “Now when I tell her about Juliet she won’t think I’m gross, but if she hates the idea of me and a girl, then I just won’t tell her anything.”
“Don’t worry” I told her “We’ll get something worked out I’m sure.”
Violet nodded “Mom could never hate us.”
I nodded in agreement.
“Now I think I can sleep” she smiled.
“Now I think I can eat” I said getting up to put on a pair of shoes.
“Are you serious?” she asked me.
“What?” I asked “When the stomach growls I have to eat.”
She just smiled “Stay safe.”
I nodded “I will, later.”
“See you later” she put her head down to snuggle into her pillow.
I grabbed my room key before stepping outside.
God it was cold out tonight.
I tucked my hands into my pockets. The only convenient part about sleeping in basketball shorts, they came with pockets.
I walked quickly to the cafeteria. Once I pulled the doors open I saw people, people I knew who weren’t Vampire, Demon, Werewolf, or any other kind of creature I once thought was only a myth.
“You aren’t supposed to be out tonight” one of them stated.
“Sorry” I mumbled “I was just hungry.”
Another one of the men stepped closer “This one is human” he laughed “How ironic.”
“You are one of the Knight twins; you are pretty famous right now.”
Everything Ariel told me about spreading the word and freeing them went through my mind all at once. I would be famous for surviving four years. They would probably give the Vampires a second chance… probably, but not definitely.
“You are still human correct?”
I nodded “Yeah.”
A large man in a suit stood up and walked slowly towards me. I could hear the sound of his pants scraping between his legs as he progressed forward.
He stopped in front of me “This is interesting” his face went into a large rolled grin.
“I must agree sir” this guy said next to him in an English accent.
“How is this interesting?” another man demanded “Mr. Mayor are you insane?”
I stared; this big guy was the Mayor?
“Something fishy is going on here” the Mayor said “I’d like to know what those undead monsters have up their sleeves.”
The look on his face was one of a criminal, the look in his eyes screamed gluttony, starvation; he wanted to sink his teeth into something.
What the hell was wrong with this man?
“What is your name?” the Mayor asked me as if he really didn’t care, but as if it would get him somewhere if he did.
“Jade” I stated.
“Ah” his grin widening “How about you and I have a word” he looked at all the men around him “In private?”
I was about to say something but the door behind me burst open.
“Get the guns” the Mayor yelled cowering behind the guards.
Lucian stood in the doorway, the angriest I have ever seen him.
“Greedy fucking man” Lucian spat “You aren’t welcome here!”
The Mayor’s grin was back as he came forward again.
“Mr. Cross” he said tauntingly “It’s been a while, hasn’t it?”
Lucian just continued to glare at the man “I’d say it was nice to see you, but quite frankly it’s far too soon.”
“I wondered where they sent you” the Mayor checked his nails “I have some sad news.”
“Try me.”
Sad news, what was he talking about?
“Your kind is so gullible; can you believe that the Vampire race has finally begun to turn on itself?”
What? I could feel my eyes start to sting, he can’t mean what I think he means.
It’s been over two hundred years, why now?
“You’re number one on death row Lucian” The Mayor smiled “We finally have a way to kill you.”
I just stood there staring wide eyed at him.
Lucian began to laugh “Kill me? God I wish you actually could.”
My gaze fixated on Lucian now. Why did he want to die?
I don’t even know why I asked that, I already knew the answer.
“Funny thing loyalty is” the Mayor said “Wouldn’t you agree?”
Lucian looked a little confused.
“Don’t you listen?” the Mayor spat “We have Vampires executing their brothers and sisters.”
My chest hurt, Lucian can’t die. He can’t just be gone.
“We came here to get you.”
“All of you to get me?” he asked in an amused tone “I’m disappointed in you Leslie.”
The Mayor’s face went beat red “That is not my name!”
Lucian smiled this time.
It was a smile that made my heart skip a beat.
“Mayor.” the Englishman said “If I may?”
The Mayor only nodded.
“Lucian Gregory Cross, you are to be publicly executed in two days time” the man said closing the book he had in his hands.
I shook my head “You can’t do that.”
“Ah but my dear” Leslie said “He is the Vampire at the top of the list to be executed.”
I wanted to tell him that Lucian wasn’t a Vampire, but he would ask what he was… and then I would be put on the spot, I had no idea what he really was.
“You know how I know the execution will work?” the Mayor asked “Go on, ask I bet you’re dying to know.”
I shook my head.
Lucian just shrugged “Go on, you’re just going to tell us anyway.”
Wasn’t he scared at all? I couldn’t even think about him leaving the school, he was going to be killed!
“Victoria is dead” the Mayor smiled “I watched her burn.”
“Fire?” I asked “That’s it?”
Fire couldn’t possibly be their weakness… could it?
“Not fire you daft girl” the English man said “That was what kept her from coming back”
Lucian stiffened. He was scared now I could see it.
“Lucian” I said low.
He shook his head “You need to go now” he wouldn’t look at me.
He was scared; he didn’t want me to see it.
“I will do no such thing” I hissed.
“When are we leaving?” Lucian asked the Mayor.
“Oh” the large man smiled “Eager to be on time to your own death?”
“Something like that” Lucian muttered.
“Gather your things then Vampire” the man with the English accent said “Meet us at the front gate, and be quick about it, we do have a short time frame.”
The men all walked out leaving me and Lucian here.
He went to follow them but I grabbed his arm.
“What are you doing? Are you crazy?” I demanded.
“I’m actually in my right mind” he stated “But I should go.”
“Why are you going to let them take you?” I asked “Or are you going to run away?”
He stared at me “I’m not running away.”
“Aren’t you scared?” I asked him low.
He looked away “Why should I be? Do you know how long I’ve been waiting for this?”
I stared wide eyed at him “Why would you want to die? Don’t you have anything to live for?”
He looked back at me “Because I have to watch people die, I watched so many people I cared about die. I’m the only one that can hold onto their memory and the things that they told me, it’s a burden that is far too heavy for one person to carry forever.”
He was talking about Allison.
“What about me?” I asked low “What about my feelings?”
“They can’t stop the whole world from wanting me dead” he stated “Besides, it’s against the law for you to even kiss me.”
“You’re not a Vampire though” I stated.
“But I am an immortal, I will not die” he sighed “I’m tired of watching everyone around me die.”
“So you’re just going to give up?” I whimpered “You can’t, you have to live Lucian, please.”
He just slowly shook his head “I’m tired of fighting, they win, end of story.”
“Can’t you just fight one more time?” I pleaded.
He stared at me “It doesn’t work like that, Jade.”
I shook my head furiously “You are so fucking stupid” I hissed “Some love huh?”
He stared blankly at me “I just can’t.”
I stormed out of the cafeteria, completely forgetting that I was hungry. The only thing my stomach felt now was sick.
Lucian was going to let them kill him.
What about me? Can’t I be selfish just once!?
Why is he so desperate to get away from me?
I could already feel the tears threatening to fall.
Why isn’t he stopping me? Why can’t he tell me he loves me and we’re going to run away together?
Because this isn’t a fairy tale, this is my life, a sick joke.
A drama, a tragedy! All I want is to… to… what do I want?
I stood face to face with the door to my room.
I didn’t want to be alone anymore, that was one of the things I wanted.
Lucian was another. How could he just… laugh at my feelings?
Again, that stupid boy made me cry.

~ <> ~

I woke up to the sound of yelling.
“What happened?” it was definitely female.
I sat up to rub at my eyes before putting my glasses on to see everybody correctly.
“Good morning everybody” I smiled pretending to be OK.
“Did you hear?” Ariel asked me.
“Hear what?” I asked confused.
“The government figured out how to kill Vampires!” Brock growled.
I stared at him as if I was hearing this for the first time “What?”
“The Mayor came last night to get Lucian” Ariel said low “For a public execution.”
Violet gasped “Oh my god, are you sure?”
I stared blankly at her; I could feel my heart breaking.
“Is there anything we can do?” Violet asked.
Ariel hesitated before shaking her head “He brought this upon himself.”
I wanted to yell at her and tell her that she was wrong, but he did, he did so many bad things.
“How did you find out?” Violet asked.
“We all have to attend his execution on Sunday” Brock hissed.
“What?” Violet asked “That soon?”
Ariel nodded “I just hope that they were wrong, that they don’t know how to kill Vampires.”
I wanted to tell her that I wished it weren’t true, but she didn’t see how OK with death Lucian actually was.
“Jade?” Ariel asked.
I looked up at her.
“Are you alright?”
I nodded but quickly shook my head “How can they do that?”
“Because now they know how to kill them” Brock shrugged crossing his arms.
“But won’t they discover Werewolves and Demons too?” I asked “The executions they are performing are specifically for Vampires.”
“Do you know how to kill a Vampire Jade?” Ariel asked me.
I shook my head.
“We are ripped apart, separating our arms and legs from our organs, and decapitating us detaching our brain so it will take us longer to reassemble ourselves” she stated “But burning us will keep our limbs from reattaching, slowly the fire will kill every cell and follicle until we are reduced to ash.”
I stared at her; I got the most horrible image in my head of Lucian being ripped apart.
“We really can’t do anything?” I asked.
They both shook their heads.
“It’s beyond our control now” Ariel murmured.
Today was Friday, meaning not tomorrow, but the day after I would have to watch Lucian die.
“Jade?”
I looked at Violet; I could see the pity in her eyes. It’s not like Juliet was being killed right in front of her.
“There is a list” Brock began “Vampires that have been imprisoned because they murdered a human, they are executing them all, everyone on the list starting with Lucian.”
The Mayor had a say in this right? Maybe if I talk to him…
“Jade?”
I looked up to see all of their eyes on me.
“What?”
“You seem spaced out?” Brock stated.
I shook my head “I’m sorry, I should probably go see Sage.”
“Do you want me to come with you?” Violet asked with a hopeful smile.
I shook my head “I can go by myself, thanks.”
“Oh, ok” I could hear her disappointment, but I had to do this.
“I’ll be back” I said after getting my shoes on and walking out the door.
The human security division was near the front gate… that would have to be where he is now. It had to be.
It took me a little while but I made it to the large security building.
It was surrounded by barbed wire gates with large pointed tips.
I pressed the large button near the gate.
“What do you want” said a male voice.
“I want to talk to the Mayor” I said firmly.
“No, get lost kid.”
“It’s Jade Knight, let me talk to him, I need to talk to him.”
There was a short silence before a loud beeping sound. The gate slid open granting me access.
“Thank you” I called running through the door before it closed.
A large muscled man opened the door to glare at me.
“Don’t keep my guest waiting.”
I knew that voice, it already made me sick.
The man moved aside and I walked through. There were television screens all over the place, not one showing any part of the school campus.
“Ah, Jade” the Mayor smiled “What brings you here?”
“I’ll do anything” I said.
He cocked his head to the side “For?”
“Don’t kill him, please.”
Everybody started laughing.
“Don’t kill him” mocked one of the men in the back using a high pitched voice.
I glared at him “Say that to my face.”
The man stiffened before turning around.
“Feisty little one” the Mayor said.
“I’m serious, don’t kill him” I pleaded “Please.”
“Even if I didn’t want to” he shrugged “I can’t stop it, the president passed a bill to execute specific Vampires.”
I hesitated before speaking “What if I could give more valuable information then just killing a Vampire?”
He sat forward “I’m listening.”
“Can you stop Lucian’s execution?”
He looked around “That all depends, what kind of information are we talking about?”
“The very important kind.”
“Go on, tell me.”
I shook my head “How stupid do you think I am?” I hissed.
“Extremely stupid” he stated “You came here trying to get me to save this thing, you are breaking the law, you are in love with it, and you should be put to death right along with it.”
“He!” I yelled “He is not an it.”
“It makes no difference, in two days he will be dead” he stood up “And you will be to.”
My heart began to pound.
“Unless you tell me that important information.”
I was stupid, I was the stupid one not Lucian. He went willingly; he could have made a big deal and escaped.
But he would have put everyone else here in danger, they would know that the Vampires knew how to get out of here if they wanted to, which would mean a mass killing of the Vampire race.
He wasn’t being selfish, he was thinking about me. Or at least I would like to hope he was.
“Out with it!” the Mayor hissed.
What do I tell him? I felt myself panicking.
“Spring break” I blurted the first thing that came to my mind.
He looked confused “What of it?”
“Did you know that humans break into the campus during spring break?”
He shook his head “That’s not true; a whole bunch of children would be missing.”
I shook my head “The Vampires plan ahead of time for spring break, we sat at the gates to keep the humans from getting inside. Some Vampires will still never forgive us because of what you did.”
“What we did” he tried to correct me “What humans did.”
I shook my head “I am still on their side, I am proof that they aren’t killing machines, the fact that everybody isn’t a Vampire or dead is proof that they have restraint.”
He looked like he was thinking “I can’t take him off death row, but thanks for the little spring break heads up.”
“But I thought…”
“You thought I could save him” he laughed “No, now get out of my sight.”
I stared blankly at him.
“Someone escort her out immediately.”
The man from the front door grabbed me but my upper arm and walked me out.
I couldn’t believe that he just did that. Well I mean he was trying to kill Lucian, he obviously hated him, but why lie to me?
Wasn’t there anything I could do to save him?
I stared forward before I got another idea.

~ <> ~

I stood outside of Blaze and Abel’s room.
No matter how many times I knocked they didn’t answer.
“Abel!” I called “Blaze! Please answer the door!”
I kept knocking but still nothing.
Maybe they got away? Maybe they finally ran off together like Abel wanted.
The door opened and Abel stood there, his eyes were clearly red.
“Abel?” I asked.
“He is going to be executed” he murmured.
“What?” I asked him.
“Blaze” he gasped, I could see tears falling down his cheeks “And Lucian.”
I could feel my eyes start to water now.
“Jade” he said “I’m going to save him.”
I shook my head “I can see so many bad things happening because of that, but I know how bad it is Abel, we have to do something that doesn’t involve fighting.”
He stared at me “If he dies I die to, do you get that?”
I stared “What?”
“If he dies I have no reason to live.”
“Please” I said “Help me save them without making things worse.”
He stared at me “How?”
“I was hoping you might have some sort of idea” I admitted.
“The list” he said “We need to get our hands on the list.”
I nodded, that was a damn good idea.
“But how?” I asked.
He bit his lip “That part I don’t know.”
“So we just find it and remove their names?” I asked.
“That would be a great idea Jade, but we have no idea how many copies there are” he stated “That’s where it would get tricky.”
“Don’t you have like special Demon powers?” I asked him.
He glared “So just because I’m a Demon I have special powers? How cliché of you Jade.”
“I’m sorry, I just thought that maybe you could read minds or something and figure out who has the list, and then change it.”
He looked at me “I can read minds, and that was a brilliant idea.”
I stared “Are you kidding or was it really a good one?”
He smiled pulling me along with him.
“Abel?” I asked not being able to keep up with him.
“It was a really good idea, and I know who has it.”
“So who has it?” I asked.
“Mr. Mayor” he stated “And let’s just say that someone is going to experience a little case of amnesia.”
I can’t explain the feeling I just got, my stomach felt like it jumped up with joy at hearing that. We can save them both.
“So how is this going to work?” I asked him once we stopped.
“There’s nothing we can do right now, but tomorrow” he said “I’ll stop by your room to get you in the morning.”
I stared at him “Are you sure?”
He nodded “I need to catch up on my mind melting powers.”
I glared “Don’t make fun of me.”
He laughed “I’ll get you tomorrow.”
I nodded before he walked off in the opposite direction.
So now we sort of have a plan. How are we going to get it to work?
Stop! I scolded myself. I need to go back to my room and rest up for tomorrow.
I walked back to my room, once inside I saw Violet pacing.
“Hey” I smiled lightly.
“Are you ok?” she gripped my arms.
I flinched back “I’m fine”
She stared confused “But Lucian is… are you really over him that fast?”
I shook my head “Abel and I have a plan”
“What about Blaze?” she asked.
“He” I paused “He is going to be executed too.”
She frowned “Poor Abel.”
“That’s why we are going to get our hands on that list” I said “We are going to change it.”
She smiled “That’s a great idea, how?”
“Our plan gets set in motion tomorrow, if you want in you have to get up when Abel stops by, got it?”
She nodded “Got it.”
“Now we should probably sleep” I stated “That way we can keep on our toes.”
Violet nodded again “Yeah, night” she smiled and jumped into bed.
I couldn’t help but smile, she was worried about me. She was going to help me save him.
“Hey Violet” I mumbled once I settled into bed.
“Yeah?” she asked.
“I love you.”
She gasped “Do you have any idea how long it’s been since you said that to me?”
I rolled my eyes “No I love you too? Gosh Violet.”
“I love you too Jade.”
“Thanks, you know for helping me save him” I mumbled.
“I don’t want to see you sad; I’d help no matter who it was.”
“I’d help you too.”
“I’m just glad that it’s not Juliet” she sighed.
“I’m glad too” I said “Now sleep!”
“Goodnight Jade.”
“Night.”
I shut my eyes, but I couldn’t keep myself from fantasizing about what’s going to happen tomorrow. We would save Lucian and he would kiss me and finally admit that he loved me too. Abel and Blaze would act like manly men and just hug, but the looks in their eyes would reveal pure relief and love.
It took forever, but I finally went to sleep.

~ <> ~

There was a light knocking on the door and I went right to the door.
“Ready?” Abel asked as he slipped through the door.
I nodded “Violet is in the bathroom, she wanted to come too.”
He nodded “Alright, but she better be quick about it.”
“Why?” I asked him “We are just going to get the list and remove their names right?”
“You do know that we can’t remove every name right?” he asked me.
I nodded “Then they would know something was up.”
He glanced over at the bathroom door “Would she be mad if we just ditched her?”
“Of course she would be mad” I stated.
He frowned.
“Violet” I called “Move your ass!”
She opened the door quickly and smiled “Sorry.”
Abel looked a little more relaxed.
“So are you ready?” he asked her.
She nodded “Yep.”
“Let’s go then” he opened the door and we followed him out.
“So what do we do first?” Violet asked.
“First we have to get someone into the security’s headquarters” Abel stated “But it can’t be anyone that they would think was bad.”
“So who do we get to go in there?” I asked.
He looked over at Violet “I would ask you, but I already know you won’t be up to doing it.”
“What?” she asked confused.
“We have to ask Sage, she is our doctor, she is the only one that the government actually trusts.”
I stared at him “I still don’t think I follow you.”
“We get her to get in there, find the list, let us in, and then we work our magic.”
I nodded slowly “So we use her to get their guard down, then you use that mind bendy power and we change the list!”
“Exactly” he nodded.
Violet looked at us like we were crazy.
“Do you follow?” I asked her.
She nodded “A little bit.”
“Ok, I’ll go ask her” I said.
He shook his head “I already asked her, she’s on her way now.”
I made a face; he really must have planned this out.
“So what do we do now?” I asked him.
“We wait.”
He led us near the security station, but away enough so we wouldn’t be detected.
I watched Sage walk through the gate with a large purse hanging over her shoulder.
The same large guard opened the door to let her through.
“That big guy is trouble” Abel said low.
“Trouble how?” Violet asked him.
“Sometimes in the middle of the night he would walk around and electrocute Vampires just to immobilize them.”
I frowned, that was kind of… OK it was REALLY messed up.
“Does he still do it?” Violet asked.
“Not as much as he used to, because a few guards have been going missing lately.”
“I think I know who’s behind that” I stated.
“It’s not Monica and Bradley” Abel stated.
“Yes it is” I stated “They were talking about killing a guard when I first met them.”
Abel shrugged “They did get mad at the humans, but it wasn’t them, that I know for certain.”
“Then who was it?” Violet asked.
He looked at both of us before shaking his head.
“It was Lucian, wasn’t it?” I asked him.
He hesitated before nodding “It’s been a while since I’ve seen him act so reckless, but something made him snap.”
Something made him snap?
“What do you think did it?” Violet asked before I had the chance to.
Abel shrugged “If I knew I would have been able to help him, maybe he wouldn’t be on death row right now.”
The gates outside of the security station opened.
“There’s our cue” Abel said running towards the door.
I looked at Violet before following behind him, and her following behind me.
Once I got inside I stared. Everybody in the room was out cold.
The Mayor sat at the largest table at the end of the room.
“So all we do is find the list?” I asked.
Abel nodded.
I looked around “Where would it be hiding?” I asked.
Everybody looked around unsure.
“I don’t know” Abel scratched the back of his head.
“It would be the last place we look right?” Sage asked “I think I know where it is.”
“Where?” I asked.
“Lucian” she mumbled “The first to go would go, and then they would read off the list.”
“So, what you’re saying” I began “No one actually knows who’s on the list except for Lucian.”
She shook her head “Blaze is gone too, he must be second or third.”
Abel rested his hand on the back of the Mayor’s chair “I will take care of that, you guys go find Lucian.”
“Where do we look?” I asked “Where would he be?”
Sage made a face “I’m not going.”
“Why not?” Violet asked “We don’t know where to go.”
Sage looked over at me “The only thing we can do right now is figure out where they have him.”
“So you don’t know?” Violet asked.
Abel shook his head “If we knew then we wouldn’t be here now.”
“Does the Mayor know?” I asked him.
Abel looked at me for a second before placing a hand on the back of the Mayor’s neck.
“So?” Violet asked “Where is he?”
“He doesn’t know where he is right now.”
I made a face “So what do we do now?”
“But” Abel picked his hand up “He knows where Lucian is supposed to be tomorrow before the execution.”
“So what?” I ask “Are we supposed to sneak out?”
He shook his head “The execution will be held here.”
“Here?” Violet asked panicked.
“Here” Sage nodded.
“So then where will he be tomorrow?” I asked Able.
“The Mayor requested that Lucian be held in the room of the humans” he made a face “Isn’t that a little strange?”
Sage made a face “Why would he do that?”
I tried not to look at anyone. I think I might have some sort of an idea as to why the Mayor is going to have Lucian in our room tomorrow… because I talked to him, because he knows how I feel about Lucian. Maybe the Mayor wasn’t such a bad guy, he was probably just following orders. He was going to let me see Lucian before he died.
“Jade” Abel said “What do you know?”
I made a face “I talked to the Mayor yesterday.”
“What?” Violet demanded.
“You talked to the Mayor by yourself?” Abel asked.
I hesitated before nodding.
Abel placed his hand back on the Mayor’s neck.
I didn’t want him to see what I said; I didn’t want him to know anything about it.
It took a minute but he pulled his hand off, and he looked right at me.
“What happened?” Violet was quick to ask.
“Maybe you should stay in my room tonight Violet” Abel said.
“Why?” she asked “What happened?”
“It’s just so that when they bring Lucian to your room that she gets some time to talk to him.”
“I don’t need time to talk to him” I stated “We are going to save him.”
He made a face “Yeah, we are going to save him.”
I felt like he was lying to me, like there was something else happening.
I nodded slowly “Alright, so what do we do now?”
“We go back to our rooms” Abel shrugged.
I could already feel my stomach about to growl “After we eat” I smiled sheepishly.
So we went to eat.

~ <> ~

I sat on my bed and I waited. Not sure entirely why I was waiting, but I was.
Lucian was supposed to be sent to my room.
What was I going to say? What was I going to do?
I had no idea, I just really hate that he made it so easy on them. That he just gave up as if it were nothing, like he wanted to die.
There was nothing fair about it.
I do know that he hurt people, but what else was he supposed to do?
OK no, Jade he shouldn’t have hurt people, I get it I do… but why did he hurt them? Was there actually a reason?
I glanced at my phone.
1:37am
I frowned. Was he really coming or was it just a lie?
Maybe that was why Abel wanted Violet to sleep in his room; so that when I figured out that Lucian really wasn’t going to show up I could wallow in my own self pity.
It was kind of sad…
There was a light knock on my door, and then I felt myself shiver.
Was it him? Was he here? Who was at my door this late?
Instead of asking myself anymore stupid questions I opened my door.
“Hello” a tall man in suit greeted me.
“Hi” I mumbled.
He looked behind him before gesturing to someone to come over.
Lucian was pushed forward and he was covered in chains. His legs were bound tightly together, his wrists were bound, and he had a large cage around his head, and more chains linking it all together.
I stared.
“So we were given orders to leave him here with you until tomorrow’s execution” the man said.
I nodded.
The man pushed Lucian inside.
“You can remove the chains” I said.
“He might try to get away” the man stated.
I shook my head “He won’t, just get this stuff off him.”
“Your funeral kid” the guy said handing me the keys “You get him out, I’m not going to give this thing even the slightest opportunity to bite me.”
I nodded as the guy walked to the door “I’ll be back to get him at noon tomorrow, you better have him chained up by the time I get here.”
I nodded again “I will.”
He closed the door behind him.
I made sure to lock it completely before turning and looking back at Lucian.
“So why would they have me brought here?” he asked in an unfriendly tone.
I tried to put the key in one of the locks be he backed away.
“Lucian?” I asked.
“What are you planning?” he asked me.
“We’re going to save you” I stated.
He shook his head and laughed, he laughed at me.
“It’s not funny” I hissed.
“You’re right, it’s not funny” he leaned against the wall opposite me “It’s sad.”
I glared at him “Why is it sad?”
“Because you can’t just let me go in peace.”
“Because you won’t be going in peace!” I shouted “You’ll be going in pieces!”
He didn’t say anything.
I pulled the key back out and I went for the cage around his neck.
“Just stop it Jade” he said angrily.
“Why?” I asked “Why can’t I at least try?”
“Fine” he said low.
I moved as fast as I could, I unlocked his feet first so that he couldn’t complain then his hands, then the one around his neck that held the cage over his head.
I stared at him once I got the chains completely off, his wrists and neck looked dirty from the chains.
“Now what?” he asked in a pissy tone “You got what you wanted, what’s your plan?”
I found myself starting at him, his eyes were so dark, and his hair has gotten longer.
“What do you expect?” he asked “For me to say those three measly little words just because I’m going to die?”
I shook my head “You aren’t going to die.”
“That’s a lie, we both know that.”
I shook my head again “You are going to be alright.”
“Really Jade?” he hissed “What do you plan to do? Erase everyone’s memory?”
“No, we are going to change the list.”
“What the fuck is that going to do?” he growled “Nothing, everyone knows that I am supposed to die, regardless if you change the list I’m done for.”
“Why don’t you care?” I asked.
“Why should I care?” he asked shrugging.
“Because you should.”
“Because you love me?” he spat “Why do you care?”
I just stared at the ground “You have nowhere to leave now; you have to stay with me until tomorrow.”
He stared back at me “So what?”
“So” I shrugged “Stop pretending like you hate me for five minutes!”
“Who said I was pretending?” he asked cocking his head to the side.
“Your actions did, the way you contradict yourself” I stated “Just stop it.”
“It is my last night” he said.
“So what do you want to do?” I asked him low.
“First a shower.”
I couldn’t help but roll my eyes “Go for it, I’ll leave some clothes out for you.”
He only nodded before walking into the bathroom.
Great, he was here. What do I do? What is he thinking? Hell, what am I thinking?
I just shook my head and went to my closet; I had a band shirt he could wear. I stared at the small trunk under my bed; I knew I had a few pairs of boxers in there. What can I say? I liked the leg space.
I also pulled out a pair of basketball shorts. I made sure to fold them all up into a pile before knocking on the door.
“Yeah?” he asked.
“I got you some clothes.”
“You can leave them out there.”
I didn’t say anything; I just set them on the foot of my bed before lying in my spot.
I couldn’t stop myself from thinking about him, about what he was thinking right now. Why did he stay? I want an honest answer, not some bullshit one.
Part of me knew I was over thinking all of this.
The water shut off and right away I tensed.
What do I do! Oh god do I just act casual?
Casual!? What the hell is wrong with you? I cursed myself.
“I’m coming out” I heard him say after a minute.
I turned my head away to give him privacy.
“I tend to wonder sometimes how you can act so innocent, but have a mouth as foul as yours.”
I glared at the wall “What is that supposed to mean?”
“The time period I come from, women were ladies.”
I could see him pull the boxers on in my peripheral vision.
“So what if I’m not a lady?”
“Did I say there was a problem with that?” he asked.
He sat down on the bed and I used that as my chance to look at him.
“How did you get those scars?”
“Those are from way too long ago, it’s not something I tell just anyone.”
“Do I get to know anything about you?” I asked “Anything?”
“You know my middle name, is that not enough to quench your curiosity?”
I shook my head “Not even close, I want to know more.”
“I’m not an only child.”
“I know that” I sighed “Tell me something I don’t know.”
“I really did kill all those people” he stared at the ground.
My eyes lingered on the red rose on his shoulder; it was almost in full bloom.
I didn’t say anything.
“Doesn’t that bother you at all?” he growled.
I found myself shaking my head “It doesn’t, and that’s what worries me.”
He still didn’t turn around.
“So you really don’t feel anything for me?” I asked him.
I really wanted to know the answer.
“I’m not really sure” he murmured.
“You’re not sure?” I asked “Then why did you kiss me?”
“Because I wanted to” was all he said.
“That’s it? You weren’t dying to do it you just did?”
He didn’t say anything.
“What were you even thinking?” I asked.
Again he didn’t say anything.
“Oh, that’s right, it was probably too much trouble to remember” I hissed.
“I knew exactly what I was thinking” he stated “Do you remember even a single thought that ran through your mind that night?”
“Of course” I said low “After you kissed me I wanted you to do it again so badly.”
“That doesn’t count.”
“Why doesn’t that count?” I asked “It was a thought.”
He sighed “Why do you have to do this now?”
“What do you mean now?” I demanded “I’ve been trying to do this forever, you just never listened.”
He pulled the band shirt over his head.
Now instead of seeing his bare skin and the secrets they held, I was staring at the word Archway written in red.
“So are you finally going to tell me what you really are?” I asked.
He shook his head “I will take that secret to my grave.”
“Are you a Demon?” I asked.
He was silent.
“I know you aren’t a Vampire, or at least that’s what everyone tells me.”
Not even a peep.
“Lucian?”
“Jade” he shook his head.
“What?” I frowned “You are the one who is making this difficult.”
“Why can’t you just let me do this?” he finally turned to look at me.
“Because” I said low “What about me? What about figuring out if you really do like me or not?”
“I broke the law when I first kissed you” he looked away now “I’ve broken the law far too many times, I just want to leave things as they are.”
“Why?” I stood to stand in front of him “You could change a few things before you go.”
“And what would I change?” he asked almost angry.
“For one you could help people see that you aren’t as bad as they think you are.”
“I wouldn’t want that” I shook his head “I’m going to go out with a bang.”
“Don’t say something so stupid” I felt helpless; I didn’t know what to say to make him fight.
“You don’t see the world like I do” he stated.
“Clearly I don’t” I crossed my arms.
“I’m not going anywhere remember” he said low “Say what you want, it’s your last chance.”
“I don’t want to feel like it is” I frowned “I just can’t see you die.”
“Just close your eyes, I wont give them the satisfaction of hearing me scream or beg.”
I shook my head “Please stop.”
His arms wrapped around me “This has to happen Jade, I have to die.”
“No you don’t” I dug my face into his chest “Tell me we can run away together, you and me against the world.”
“I can’t say that.”
“Why not?” I asked tightening my grip around him.
“Because, eventually you would want to stop running” he said “You wouldn’t want me anymore.”
“Says who?” I demanded.
“History” he stated “Facts.”
I pulled away from him before staring at the ground.
“Whatever you want to say, say it.”
“Why can’t you say something?” I asked.
“I’m doing my best here” he said looking away “You think I’m good at saying goodbye?”
“What about Allison?” I asked.
He stood there, for the first time I saw utter shock on his face. His eyes were wide, but quickly they went to angry “What?”
“Allison Finnegan” I stated “You were in love with her.”
“I don’t know who that is.”
I glared at him now “Don’t you dare.”
He didn’t budge.
“Fine” I hissed before going to my bag to pull out the envelope of copied pictures “Then explain this to me.”
I handed him the envelope and he hesitated before pulling them out to look at them.
“Where did you get these?”
“I’m related to Allison” I stated “My mother had the pictures; she has our entire family history with her.”
He didn’t say anything; he just stared at the pictures in his hands.
“She gave you up because they promised to give you a fair trial.”
“Don’t you dare” he growled.
“I talked to Allison.”
“Don’t you dare fucking lie to me Jade!”
I’ve never heard him like this, I was scared.
“They told her that if she didn’t give you up then they would kill you, she believed that if you were alive then it was better than you being dead!”
“I might as well have been!” he growled “Why are you doing this?”
“You say you’re going to die” I mumbled “I get to say whatever I want to right?”
“How long have you known this?” he asked “Since Vacation?”
I nodded “My mom knew you; she knew your name, your face, all of it.”
“What do you believe?” he asked me.
“I don’t know” I mumbled.
“Did you know when I found you in the dressing room?”
I shook my head.
“I won’t leave you” I felt like crying “I know you don’t trust us, I think it’s because of the girls in my family, not because of the government or every human, because they left you.”
He quickly turned away from me.
“Lucian?”
“It doesn’t work like that.”
“Why not?”
“Because eventually you will leave, you are human you would die.”
I stared “I don’t have to die” I shook my head “I would do anything.”
“No.”
“Lucian please listen” I pleaded.
“No!” he said louder “This time I am leaving.”
“But you don’t have to.”
“Yes I do” he said “If I don’t then there will be so much chaos, this world has suffered through so much of it, it just needs a break.”
“I thought you hated humans?” I asked.
“I don’t hate all of them” he mumbled “As long as I’m leaving you behind; you might as well be safe.”
“You and I both know I’ll never be safe” I mumbled “I’ll end up doing something stupid and the Vampires will come after me again.”
He shook his head “That I did change”
I stared at his back “Change how?”
“They will all look after you, no matter the cost.”
“Lucian” I swear I was going to cry.
“Don’t make that sound” he groaned.
“I can do whatever I want” I hissed.
He was quick to turn around “Then do something.”
I couldn’t move. I was frozen in his gaze.
“See, you can’t.”
I had to move, I had to move!
“See Jade” he said low “Some love”
That was it.
I forced my body forwards and I took his face in my hands and I kissed him.
I wasn’t sure if he did that to provoke me, but it worked.
His arms wrapped around me, and he kissed me back.
Everything felt so light; it was like everything I was so worried about was going away, and everything that was important was right here. Lucian was right here, for once not pushing me away. He held me tightly against him, forcing his tongue into my mouth.
I craved this boy for how long now? Why is that he had to die tomorrow?
I wrapped my arm around his shoulders and I ran my tongue over his.
He pulled back for air before kissing me lightly and biting my bottom lip.
The look in his eyes were so different, it was like they got brighter.
“Lucian” I murmured before kissing him again.
This feeling, I couldn’t possibly describe it. It was almost like what I would imagine walking on air to be like. That light feeling as I step into the sky, that amazing feeling. This time it was like Lucian was flying and I was in his arms, that if he let go I would fall.
“Jade” he breathed kissing down my neck.
My body was burning.
He stopped. He completely stopped, his hands released me and his lips closed as he backed away.
“Lucian?” I asked.
“I can’t do it.”
Was there something wrong with me? Was I not pretty enough?
He stared at the ground “It’s not you I swear.”
“Then who is it?” I asked feeling empty.
His back made contact with my closet door before he slid down to a sitting position.
“Let me guess, it’s not me it’s you.”
He didn’t move.
“You are such a bastard.”
“You really don’t get it Jade.”
“Then explain it to me” I said.
He didn’t say anything to me.
“Don’t you dare say it’s because you could get me pregnant, because I already know that you are infertile.”
“God” he hissed “Isn’t anything fucking sacred anymore?”
“Just tell me” I demanded.
“Tell you what?” he asked “You won’t believe me anyway”
“Try me” I said harshly.
“The second I” he looked to the side “I’ve sealed your fate.”
“Sex will kill me?” I asked scared.
“No” he shook his head “You won’t be allowed to enter heavens gates.”
“Right” I said.
“See, you wouldn’t believe me.”
I made a face “OK, so hypothetically speaking, you are right.”
“Hypothetically” he said.
“Do I die right after, or am I just never allowed to go to heaven?”
“You wouldn’t be allowed into heaven ever.”
I nodded slowly “Allison is in heaven.”
He froze “Didn’t I ask you to stop that?”
“Sorry” I mumbled “But I really did talk to her I swear.”
“Hypothetically speaking you did.”
“Hypothetically.”
“How did you talk to her?”
I showed him the bracelet on my wrist “It was a gift from her, I met her in the secret room.”
“So she is no longer there?”
I nodded slowly “She really did love you Lucian.”
“Right.”
“She did” I said.
“That’s why right after I was shipped off she got married to that douche bag.”
“Can I ask you a serious question?”
He just looked at me.
“How old are you, really?”
“I can’t tell you that either.”
“Why not!” I demanded “Why can’t you tell me?”
“I just can’t.”
“Don’t I get some sort of a hint then?”
He shook his head “I can’t say it. I. Literally. Can’t”
I glared “So what now?”
“Well” he stood up “We can sleep and deal with everything tomorrow.”
I didn’t want to sleep, because then I would end up losing him before I even realized it.
“Come on” he grabbed my hand “Let’s at least lie down.”
I hesitated before nodding.
I was a little surprised that he laid in the same bed as me, but at the same time I was grateful.
He wrapped his arms around me and he held me against his chest.
“Try your best to sleep” he whispered.
I nodded against him.
I’m not really sure why, or even how for that matter, but I felt so exhausted. My eyes just seemed to close on their own, and before I knew it everything was peaceful.

~ <> ~

I woke up to the sound of an alarm. It was loud and it made me feel like my head was about to explode.
“You should probably wake up.”
The sound of his voice made me freeze. I turned around to make sure that I wasn’t dreaming.
“That guy in the suit will be here in like an hour, we should probably hurry.”
I sat up to run my hand through my hair.
“Jade?” he asked low.
“Yeah, I know” I closed my eyes for a second “I just need a minute.”
“Not a morning person?” he asked.
“No, but that’s not the reason for my delay” I stated.
“So then what is?”
I opened my eyes again to look at him, he was practically glowing.
“It’s just” I sighed “I fell asleep.”
“You weren’t trying to?” he asked.
“Of course not” I frowned “I wanted to spend as much time with you as I possibly could.”
“Maybe we can do it again sometime.”
I glared at him “Don’t make fun of me.”
“I’m not” he stated “We should do this again.”
“Do you promise?” I asked him.
He nodded “I promise.”
Somehow part of me already knew that that promise would be broken.
“We should get ready now.”
I nodded and followed him as he got off the bed.
He pulled the shirt off.
“Wear them” I stated “Take them with you.”
He looked at me before putting it back on “You might miss it.”
I shook my head; I wanted to say that I would miss him more, but I just couldn’t.
Because if I did, it would mean that he was really going to die, that he was really going to leave me.
“Don’t forget to give them back to me later” I said.
He smirked “I won’t forget.”
I had to get dressed now.
“You should wear that black dress again” he said low “I really like that one.”
I could almost hear the hurt in his tone. It made me want to cry, I could feel my eyes beginning to burn.
“Yeah” I nodded “I’ll wear that one.”
I pulled the black dress out of my closet and walked towards the bathroom before stopping. It’s not like he hasn’t seen me naked, besides it’s not like I am getting naked.
I pulled my shirt off, but made sure to keep my back to him. I pulled my shorts off so I could step into my dress and pull it up.
He came up behind me to help me zip it.
“So are you finally going to tell me how you got that scar?” he asked running his hand over my neck.
“That’s a story for another time” I shrugged “I’ll tell it to you another time.”
“Do you promise?” he asked me low.
I nodded “I promise.”
I felt like one of those little girls in the movies. The ones where there is a little girl who has a huge crush on the neighbor boy, and he likes her back, but he is moving. They make constant promises to each other, like promising to write, promising to wait for the other to return to them.
I already knew that I couldn’t keep my promise, but I would tell him even if it meant me sitting at his gravesite and telling the story to his tombstone.
I made my way to the bathroom to get my hair up, and I did to the best of my ability, but a lot of the red strands just fell out of the bun I placed on the back of my head.
I knew exactly what it looked like; it looked like I was mourning the loss of someone very dear to me. But I haven’t lost him just yet.
The necklace I wore to the ball was on the knob of my closet, I put it on before staring at Lucian.
“It’s time to chain me back up” he stated low.
“I really don’t want to” I admitted.
“You have to, I can’t do it myself.”
I nodded, I knew that much.
“OK, just let me get them.”
I went over the large pile of chains to pick them up and pull them to where Lucian was standing.
First I locked them around his ankles, but I stopped.
“My hands next Jade” he held them out to me.
I hesitated before pulling his hand out and kissing his wrist and locking cuff around it, doing the exact same to the other.
“One more” he said low.
I held the large cage in my hands; it was the last thing I ever wanted to do to him.
I stared at him for a minute before getting on my tippy toes and kissing him one more time. It was a light kiss, but it felt like so much more once I pulled back to stare at him.
I couldn’t help myself, I know he was right here, but I just needed as much of him as I could get. I used my free hand to force his chin up; I kissed the areas that were already bruised from where the neck cuff was.
I pulled back so I could place the cage over his head and to lock it in place.
“Keep your head down” he said low “Don’t look up no matter what you hear.”
“Lucian.”
“Just don’t look, alright?”
“Abel will save you” I said low “Don’t worry.”
He just stared at me “There is really no way out of this; everybody knows I am going to die today, even Abel isn’t strong enough to wipe all those minds.”
“But you promised” I whimpered.
“I never promised that I would live.”
I just stood there. He was right, and I hated that he was so much.
“This was the best night that I have had in a really long time” he said “Thank you.”
I opened my mouth to speak but there was a loud booming knock.
“You should probably get that” he said low.
I did but right before the knob turned I heard Lucian mumbled something, something that I believe to have been ‘sorry.’
“I see you made it through the night” the man in the suit said to me.
I only nodded.
He looked at Lucian before smiling “Beauty and the Beast I presume?”
Lucian’s eyes were red as he glared back at the man.
“Come on, it’s time for the show to start” he yanked at the front of Lucian’s chains nearly knocking him over.
“Be careful” I said.
The man stopped “You want me to be nicer to him?”
I nodded “It couldn’t hurt, yeah.”
The man only smirked before shoving Lucian to the floor.
I gasped and tried to help pick him up but the man only shoved me back.
“You should go now” Lucian growled.
I was about to agree, but that glare was meant for me.
“But I…”
“Are more trouble than you’re worth” he spat.
I just stood there as the man hauled Lucian from the dirt and shoved him forward.
My body wouldn’t let me move, no matter how badly I needed it to.
I could only watch as Lucian struggled to walk with those chains around his ankles, and how much the man shoving him enjoyed his torment.
Once they were far enough away my legs finally decided to move. I walked to the main courtyard where it normally was supposed to be covered in trees and grass, but now it was occupied with chairs and a large wooden stage. What caught my attention the most about the stage wasn’t that it was made of wood; it was the large cross, and the chains.
“Jade” I heard my name.
I turned to see Violet, Abel, Ariel, Brock, Juliet, Zero, and even Zane.
“Where is Blaze?” I asked Abel.
“He is at another campus right now” he smiled lightly “How was your night with Lucian?”
I just shook my head.
“That bad huh?” he asked.
“It was nice, but I just wish it could have lasted longer.”
He nodded “I know what you mean.”
“Let’s go find seats” Ariel said.
Part of me wanted to yell at her, call her every profound word I could possibly think of, but it wouldn’t change Lucian’s fate.
So we all followed her to chairs near the front, which made me hate her for it.
I wasn’t sure how long it took, but every seat was occupied, and that could only mean one thing… show time.
The Mayor made his way to the microphone stand in the middle of the stage.
“Why hello there” he smiled mischievously “Don’t I have a gift for you?”
The man in the suit led Lucian up the steps until he was on the stage.
“From what I hear this man, or whatever you call him has been a burden on you all as well” the Mayor paused “So let me take care of this now.”
Everyone just sat and stared.
“Take him to the cross” the Mayor said fiercely.
The man in the suit pushed him roughly towards the large cross, a few other men got on stage to help him unlock the chains that bound Lucian.
I had to watch as they chained him up to this large cross.
I hate to say it, but Lucian Cross. His fate wasn’t fair.
The large man that used to guard the gate at the security station held this large red container in his hands, and was pouring it all over Lucian.
I had to duck my head down, I couldn’t watch.
I felt a hand on my back and I knew right away just whose hand it was.
Abel was shushing me lightly.
“Let there be fire” I heard the Mayor say, and as if on cue I could hear the flames.
They were burning him while he was still alive, wasn’t there some sort of law against this?
I kept my head down, and I stared at the grass. I was trying to focus on anything else.
The next sound made my legs shake.
It was a chainsaw.
I had to hold my hand over my mouth so I wouldn’t cry.
“May god have mercy on your soul” a man said before a loud laugh filled my ears.
“God has already chosen my fate” Lucian laughed “May he have mercy on yours, when I come back to get you.”
“Do it” the Mayor said harshly.
And I could hear the chainsaw cutting flesh. I could hear gasps coming from the Vampires.
I know I said I wouldn’t look, but my curiosity got the best of me.
The last thing I saw was the chainsaw separating Lucian’s head from the rest of his body, because tears completely blinded me.
