11. Prototype Ch. 11 - Last to Know

It took a while but I had to go to the bathroom.
“Do you need a break?” he asked.
“I have to potty” I whined.
“Go on” he set his pencils down.
“Are you almost done?” I asked not moving.
“Not quite.”
I opened my eyes to see him rubbing his.
“Are you alright?”
He nodded “I might need a break.”
I nodded pulling the blanket up to cover me.
“I’ll be back” he got up.
“Where are you going?” I felt paranoid.
“I’m going to go get a couple drinks” he slipped on a pair of sandals “Do you want anything?”
I shrugged “Anything is fine.”
He nodded opening the door and closing it behind him.
I sat there for a minute before getting up and peeking at the picture.
“Oh my god” I stared.
It was actually beautiful. It didn’t look like me, it looked nice and I would even go as far as saying sexy.
The only thing making me nervous was the fact that my breasts were showing.
Well that and the fact that he saw them.
My face began to heat up; I was standing naked in his room.
Bathroom! I rushed to the bathroom.

~ <> ~

I sat on Lucian’s bed for I don’t even know how long. I made sure to put my clothes back on. I found myself dozing off, but a loud bang brought me back into reality.
Fear was the only thing that came to mind, maybe even petrified.
A loud growl made me inch further up the bed, I held onto the blankets as if they could protect me.
“Where is she?” a loud voice came.
My body shook sending pain down my spine.
Then a crash, fighting. Something was happening outside this door but I was too scared to check.
Another growl came before a loud scream.
I didn’t know what to do; I didn’t have any way of getting out of here.
Then there was nothing, no sound at all.
There was no way I was going to get up now, I was going to cower here until somebody came back, or until I knew for certain that I would be safe walking out of here.
A low knock interrupted my thoughts.
I froze.
The knock was louder.
Who was there?
They began to bang on the door.
“Jade!”
I felt the sudden urge to open the door, but the voice in the back of my head kept telling me to stay as far away from the door as possible.
“Jade its Blaze!” he whisper yelled.
I stiffened.
There was a low whisper now.
“What?”
“Come closer!”
I got up and leaned against the door.
“You have to come with me.”
“Why should I?” I asked.
“Lucian sent me.”
I looked around frantically, I was barely dressed.
My first thought was to tell him to go away, but I rushed to Lucian’s closet and claimed a black hoodie with a red symbol on the front and a demon whispering to Jesus on the back of it, it read Devil Driver.
I pulled it over my head and opened the door to see Blaze standing there, Abel not too far behind.
“That’s what you’re wearing kitten?”
I glared at him “It’s all I have.”
“Then let’s go, now” he looked to the side and pulled me out of the room and rushed out of the dorms.
“Where are we going?” I asked them.
He held a finger over his lips.
I wanted to ask him again but he pointed behind me.
Abel nodded and stopped.
“Why is he stopping?” I asked.
Abel headed in a different direction.
“Where is he going?” I demanded.
“Do you always have to ask so many damn questions?” Blaze frowned.
“I wouldn’t be so annoying if you would simply answer my questions.”
He made an irritated face.
“We have to get you out of here for a little while.”
“Where will we go?” I asked.
“That’s the hard part” I stated looking back “Give me your hand.”
“What why?”
He just grabbed my hand and it felt like I was spinning out of control.

~ <> ~

I felt cold; even though there was something over me I couldn’t stop shivering.
“Calm down” I heard a voice.
My body shot up and pain ran down my spine.
“You alright kitten?”
I glared; only one person called me that.
“Where are we?” I asked looking around.
“In an underground safe house” Blaze informed.
“Why?” I asked slower than necessary.
“Something happened on campus” he looked at his nails before taking his knife out to clean them.
“Something like what?”
“Something bad” he glanced up at me “Something we didn’t expect to happen.”
I glared “And what was this thing that happened so unexpectedly?”
“A group came up from Campus Inferno” he stopped the knife “They were after you and your sister.”
Panic shot through me “Where is Violet?”
“Don’t worry she’s safe.”
“How do you know that?”
“Abel went to go get her; they should be here any second.”
I looked around “How exactly is he going to get in here?”
He held up a finger “You have no idea what we are truly capable of.”
I didn’t doubt that, not even for a second.
There was a light flash before I saw Abel and Violet.
Holy shit.
Blaze seemed to relax, and a smile came across his face “What took you so long?”
Abel smiled back “I ran into a little problem is all.”
“What kind of problem?”
I couldn’t help but notice that Violet was passed out.
“A Werewolf thought he could stop me.”
“Werewolf?” I mumbled to myself.
“Not Brock, a newer one” Abel said taking a seat next to Blaze.
“What happened to Violet?” I asked pulling her closer to me.
“It’s a natural reaction to teleporting for the first time, she’ll be up in a couple minutes” Blaze stated.
“So then, you two are what exactly?”
Abel looked at Blaze.
“Demons” Blaze stated.
I just nodded.
“That’s it?” Blaze asked “I expected more of a reaction.”
I shrugged “I don’t think anything can really surprise me anymore.”
“That I doubt” Blaze smirked.
I noticed Abel nudging Blaze with his leg, getting a nudge right back. What was up with these two?
“So then how long are we going to stay down here?”
“I don’t know.”
“Why don’t you know?”
“We just don’t” Blaze practically snapped “I was only told to get you two out.”
“What about everybody else?”
“They will be fine; once they realize the humans aren’t there they will leave.”
“Is it that easy?”
“Well it was up to Ariel and Landon to practically erase your scent from the campus.”
I just sat there staring down at Violet. Why us?
Another shiver went through me.
“Isn’t there another place you could take us?” I asked.
“There is” Blaze hesitated “But we aren’t supposed to take you there.”
“Why not?” I demanded.
“Because we are working from two sides here” he stated “With you and Ariel’s group, and with Lucian’s band of misfits.”
“So? I thought Lucian sent you to get me?”
“I lied so you would come out.”
I glared “Are you kidding me?”
He shook his head “He can’t help you.”
I already knew that… yet why did it hurt so much?
“Don’t take it personally” Abel said “Lucian didn’t always hate humans as much as he does.”
“Why?” I asked “Did something happen?”
“Nothing like you would think” Abel shrugged “But he’s never been the same since.”
“What happened?”
“We can’t tell you” Blaze interrupted.
“Why not?” I demanded.
“It’s not our past to tell” he stared fiercely at me.
I heard a low groan.
“My head” Violet mumbled.
“Violet” I said relieved.
“Jade?” she sat up to look at me “What’s going on?”
I shrugged “Hell if I know.”
“Something happened on campus, you aren’t allowed back until we get the OK” Blaze stated.
Violet nodded slowly as if the words were in some foreign language.
“You OK?” I asked her.
She nodded “At least I think I am.”
I hadn’t seen her since like, Friday night.
“What day is it?” I asked, I just needed to know.
“Sunday” Abel said.
“Sunday!” I blurted “Are you serious?”
They all nodded.
Have I really been with Lucian that long? How did I not notice?
“You alright kitten?”
I looked up and Blaze was looking at me oddly.
I nodded “Yeah, fine.”
He didn’t look convinced but he seemed to just let it go.
I sat there “So is this where we are supposed to sleep?” I asked feeling helpless “In this safe house?”
“They can’t stay here” Abel said.
“Sure they can.”
“They aren’t like you and me, they have don’t have a high tolerance for the cold like we do.”
“You think I don’t know that?”
They looked at each other for a minute before Abel spoke.
“We should take them there; they need a place to sleep.”
“You really think so?”
Abel nodded “We should get out of here too; this place reminds me of the war.”
Blaze frowned “I forgot, I am sorry.”
Abel shook his head before standing up and helping Blaze to his feet “It’s alright now.”
Blaze hesitated “Alright, but only for the night then we come right back here, got it?”
Violet and I both nodded.
“Alright then, let’s get going.”
Then there was a flash, and again everything blurred.

~ <> ~

I heard a low noise and I sat up.
There was nothing, I was lying in a bed with black sheets and Violet was asleep next to me.
Where was Blaze and Abel?
I got myself off the bed before realizing the room I was in only had a bed. There were no pictures, no furniture at all besides the bed.
Whose house was this?  I looked around until my eyes stopped on a door.
I hesitated before turning the knob; the hall however had pictures frames with missing pictures.
Part of me was curious and yet the other part just wanted to be home again, to see my family pictures on the wall. I missed my mom, and yet I missed how everything used to be.
I slipped out of the room and made my way down the hall until a painting caught my attention.
It was beautiful; there was a woman with long blonde hair that went down to her waist, a long red and silver dress with light brown eyes. Her skin was pale but her cheeks were rosy red.
My gaze dropped until I saw a year on the bottom left hand of the painting.
2046 and a signature I couldn’t read.
Hold on a second, the Vampires were first discovered a few years before… so then this house must belong to a Vampire or a Demon.
Now I really had to know who lived here.
I made my way further down the hall and then stopped once I was faced with two doors and more hallway to walk down.
I looked to my left then to my right, one of these doors held the answer. Or both of them held the answer.
My hand went to the one closest, my right. Before I really knew what I was doing my hand was turning the knob and sure enough there was a room filled with boxes.
Curiosity overwhelmed me, I sat in front of the first box I set eyes on and tore it open.
It was filled with paper. I pulled one out and realized right away what it was… a love letter.
It was dated February 12, 1837.

 My Dearest Love
I just can’t be with you anymore. Things are happening and people are dying.
My love for you is not enough this time and more than anything I am sorry. I know you aren’t like the monsters out roaming around, but still no part of you is human. I’m sorry, and I hope that one day you will forgive me, but I can’t stand the sight of you like this.
I know what you are, and I know what you do to survive… I’m sorry that we couldn’t have met in a life where we were both human.
Please forgive me, but I did what I must.
Allison Finnegan

Part of me felt horrible, why would she give up the one she loved like that?
There were more letters and I just had to read them.
This one was dated February 14, 1837.

 My Dear
As much as you want me to say that I love you, I’m not sure if I can anymore. You lied to me these past few years, telling me you were good and you would never hurt a fly.
You lied and I saw you, I saw that man fall before you dead. The blood won’t leave my mind, and I don’t want to think about you anymore. I can’t think about you without seeing a dead body, I can’t take it. You have to leave me alone; I can’t be with you anymore.
Allison Finnegan

I stared at the piece of paper and my heart began to ache. How could somebody do this to someone they loved?
Murderer or not, love is love… isn’t it?
When is love not enough?
My attention was caught by another box; it was labeled ‘Allison.’
I hesitated before moving to that one.
The first thing I saw was a death certificate.
Allison Leanne Finnegan announced dead April 26, 1841.
Declared: Murdered
My heart sped up, she was killed? Did he do it?
I found myself digging through her things before I found pictures.
She had long blonde hair to her waist, she stood in a garden and she was surrounded by roses. Whoever was on the other side of the camera was receiving a large smile from Allison. She was the one in the painting.
I felt almost sad seeing her, she was beautiful and strangely she reminded me of Violet.
I quickly shifted through a whole bunch of pictures until I saw the back of another person. It was a male of course, and Allison’s hand was partially in the picture.
I went through a couple more but stopped once my eyes laid on another letter, but this one was in different hand writing.

Allison
I thought about the things you said, but no matter how many times I do you are never right. What happened to forever? You really don't understand what you have done to me. If there was any possible way I could be human for you, no matter what the price was I would pay it.

It didn't say who wrote it, it was just for Allison. I looked down and there was another letter for her.

Allison
How could you? To believe that all this time I would have done anything for you. You are worse than the humans think the Vampires are, and you condemned me to their fate. You will regret it.

Neither one of the letters to her were dated, it seemed almost cruel though.
He really did love her didn't he? Why would she do something like that to him? If I was in love I would have never done that, I would do my best to stay as close to him as possible.
I dug through the box to find more pictures. Allison was beautiful; no wonder he fell in love with her... But was she nice to him? Did she take care of him? My hand stopped on another picture, Allison's thumb was covering his face.
I shifted through a few more until I saw him. He was smiling at her. I dropped the picture.
Lucian was Allison’s lover. I had to stop; I sat there staring at the picture on the ground. Lucian was with a human? Lucian was in love once? Maybe this was why he hated humans so much? Oh no... No! My gaze stayed on the picture, he was so happy.
He looked different. He looked taken care of, the marks he had on his face weren't here in the picture. His eyes didn't look so harsh. He must have really been in love huh?
I decided to dig deeper into the box, to see a marriage certificate.
No!
He got married too?
I read the names but Lucian’s name was nowhere on it.
The name Allison Leanne Finnegan was there, she got married to a James Alexander Knight in 1840.
Only one year after she sent Lucian away…
I stared at the box again before going through a few more photos, there it was, her wedding day.
She wore a white flowing gown while James wore a black and blue tuxedo. One thing I couldn’t help but notice was the baby bump she had. A shotgun wedding.
Part of me felt anger towards her… that baby wasn’t Lucian’s was it?
What I would give to be with him even for a little while, I would never be the one to push him away like that.
The sound of loud talking made me stop dead in my tracks.
“We shouldn’t be here!”
That voice was Blaze, I was sure of it.
“I don’t see why not” Abel said “He isn’t here anyway and the girls are asleep.”
I sat perfectly still.
“I guess, but I still don’t want to hear him bitch at us later for this.”
“He won’t.”
“Bullshit he won’t” Blaze snorted.
“You know him as well as I do, he won’t” Abel sighed “Besides the girls are passed out and they won’t wake up until the sun comes up, that was the deal.”
“Fine” Blaze said “But don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
“Love you too” I heard a low chuckle.
Hold on… isn’t that a little awkward?
Once I heard their voices get lower and lower I made my way outside of the room and huddled back into the bed with Violet still asleep next to me.
And I didn’t forget to grab a picture of both Allison and Lucian, just in case I needed it.
