Luke Hemmings. What more is there to say about a childhood best friend who forgot you?

20. Chapter Twenty

Luke's POV

As the hospital came into view, I started to get all jittery. I was really excited to find out what Alexis had to tell me, but I was also nervous to see Mia. I mean, after all, she had just seen me kissing another girl a not much longer than two hours ago. She probably wouldn't want to see me. I approached the main doors of the huge building and I went in, searching for the service desk. I located it and strolled over.

Just as I was about to ask the lady at the desk where I should go to see Mia, someone grabbed my arm and pulled me over to a group of chairs. I realized it was Alexis. I was about to open my mouth to say something, but I was cut off by her

"Luke, you're going to need to be sitting down to hear this news." She stated while shoving down on my shoulders, forcing me into a chair.

"Woah, calm down, calm down, I'm sitting, I'm sitting." I laughed, trying to snap her out of her oddly serious state.

"I can't calm down!" She shouted, starting to jump up and down. I had no idea what had gotten into her.

"Luke!" She squealed. "You guys were on the radio!!" She kept hopping.

I felt my mouth drop open. The only thing I was able to squeeze out was, "What?" I was in such shock.

Alexis just stared back at me with a goofy grin on her face and she nodded. I felt like I was in a dream. "I have to tell the boys!" I shouted to her, pulling out my phone and walking down a hallway where the bathrooms were. I was just about to dial Calum's number, I bumped into someone that immediately ended my happiness. Savannah.

"Oh, uh, sorry Luke." She mumbled, heading back to the waiting room. I watched as she started to turn the corner, but then she stopped. She looked over her shoulder, as if to see if I was still standing there and she turned around. Her eyes locked with mine, and I was nervous to see what was gong to happen next. I prayed she would just leave me alone and head back to her seat, but I knew that wasn't going to happen.

She started to walk towards me. I really didn't want to talk, so I tried to make an escape for the men's bathroom, but she caught up with me before I got far enough. She lightly touched my shoulder, signalling for me to turn around and face her.

"Listen Luke..." She started. "I really don't want things to be awkward between us."

I shoved my hands in my pockets. She had to be kidding. It was too late for things not to be awkward,

"I get that I kissed you when you clearly didn't like me..."

Well that's for sure.

"....And I know that you like Mia a lot. I really made  dent in the friendship that Mia and I had, and I screwed up big time. I'm so sorry Luke. I really fucked up. But I seriously want to make things better. I want to let you know I talked to  Mia, and she is just as crushed as you. I told her that I forced you to kiss me and you had nothing to do with it. And don't worry, she made up with me...But I think the person she really wants to talk to is you. You guys belong together. I can see it in your eyes. You're crazy about her."

I blushed a little bit. Was it really that obvious? I bit my lip and she laughed.

"And Luke, I am happy to tell you, she looks at you the exact same way." She grinned and then skipped off.

I just stood there. The best day ever had just turned into the worst day ever, and then it turned back into the best day ever. My brain was spinning in confusion. I decided I would just have to call the guys later. I started to head back to my seat. Now I was eager to see Mia. I just wanted to jump onto her and pull her into a huge bear hug.

I sat back down and scrolled through my Instagram feed until I saw Alexis get called up to the front desk by the secretary lady. She came back to me and Savannah a few minutes later and she told us we could go to see Mia. I was really jittery now. I hoped she wasn't going to be shocked to see me. I took a deep breath and followed a woman who was leading us through the winding halls of the hospital.

I hoped Mia wasn't that hurt. From what Savannah had told me, it seemed like Mia would have a broken arm or something like that. I was just wishing for the best while waiting for the worst.

The woman stopped at a room and she led us in. I walked in slowly, taking in everything surrounding Mia. There was  a green leafy plant in the corner of the room, a couple of chairs and of course, a bed which Mia was perched up on. She looked slightly shocked, but happy. I watched as the corners of her mouth slowly creeped into a grin.

I rushed over to her bedside, engulfing her in a hug. I pressed my lips to her ear while she pulled me closer.

"I never want to leave you. I know we have been together for about two days, but we've known each other for a lifetime, and I know staying with you is the right decision." I whispered.

She giggled and moved closer to my ear so she could tell me something. "I couldn't have said it better."

I smiled, right before adding in, "Your hair smells good."

She laughed a little more before pulling away, in order to allow Alexis and Savannah to see her.

She told us that she was okay, and she only had a few bumps and bruises, and there was no major damage like the doctor had predicted. She then lifted up her forearm revealing a huge black and blue spot.

"This is pretty much what I'm covered in. The doctor said that judging by the size of the bruise, it was a miracle that I hadn't damaged the bone! They're gonna release me in a little while, but they need to take care of this first" She laughed while motioning toward her arm. Then, Alexis and Savannah went closer to Mia to hug her or something, and I decided to move out of the way

I stood back for a minute, watching the girls, when I heard a knock on the door. I went over to open it when I heard familiar voices.

"Ash-ton, you are so annoying! Just give me the damn slice of pizza! You don't even like pepperoni!" I instantly knew it was Mikey.

"Guys, just shut up! You're giving me a headache!" Another voice yelled. I could tell it was Calum.

I tore open the door and ushered the boys in. I also noticed a few of Mia's other friends, who I didn't really know, heading down the hall to the room as well. I decided to stand and hold the door open for them.

As soon as everyone was in the room, I looked to Alexis who had a sly grin on her face. I knew she had called everyone to the hospital not only to see Mia, but to also let them know our big news.

"Okay, everyone listen up!" I shouted. "I have an announcement!" I glanced at the boys.

"Our band was playing on the local radio earlier. I don't know how or why, but it was!" I  smiling wildly, and when I looked over at the guys, their faces were priceless! I couldn't help but last.

I traced the room until my eyes locked with Mia's, and an overbearing joy rushed into my body. She looked so proud and excited for me that I couldn't help but let out a tear.

At that moment, I knew that I could never let Mia slip away, no matter the circumstances, ever again.
