Luke Hemmings. What more is there to say about a childhood best friend who forgot you?

12. Chapter Twelve

First day of school

Mia's POV

I woke up to the smell of eggs and bacon wafting up to my room from the kitchen. It smelled so good! I was a little bit curious as to why she was cooking, though. She only cooks on rare occasions.....

I sat up and thought. Then I realized it was the first day of school. I groaned as I rolled out of bed. I really don't feel like going back yet. School=People and People=Drama. It hurt my brain just thinking about it.

I walked across the hall to my bathroom with a towel and stripped down to take a shower.

When I finally got dressed and ate breakfast, I went upstairs to fix my hair. I decided to fishtail braid it, since I thought it would look like I put effort in when it really took me only five minutes.

After I finished, I topped it off with a flower crown that matched my pink shirt. After I spun around in the mirror to make sure my outfit was good, I texted Alexis to see if she would drive me. I didn't really feel like going to the school on my own, or at least not for the first day.

Being popular has it's advantages and disadvantages. The first day back is always full of rumors and other crap about us. For the most part, the rumors are false, so it gets annoying when everyone is up in your face, asking if you slept with some random guy, who in most cases, you don't even know. I couldn't handle going in by myself.

As soon as I got a response from Alexis saying she would drive me, I said bye to my mum and dad and ran over to her place. She was already in her car, waiting for me. I opened the door and jumped into the passenger side. Just as we were pulling out of her driveway, I saw Luke exit his house. He started walking down the sidewalk.

I froze. He didn't have a ride, and I thought we should offer for him to come with us, but I didn't want things to be awkward.

Sure, we had made up and all but I hadn't talked to him since the night on my balcony. I sure as hell didn't tell Alexis or any of my other friends about it. As far as I know, the only ones who know about what happened are Luke and I.

I looked at Alexis and she pointed ahead at Luke.

"Hey, do you think we should give him a ride?" She asked.

"Sure, whatever," I mumbled.

Then, before  had a chance to change my mind, she pulled over and offered for Luke to come in.

"Hop into the back!" She shouted.

"Thanks!" He replied while coming over to the rear of the car and opening the back door. His eyes locked with mine and I felt myself start to melt.

"Hi Mia!" He said to me, in a slightly shy voice.

"Hey Luke!" I responded.

Then, after he got buckled up, Alexis turned on her radio and we listened to music for the rest of the way. Her and I talked, but Luke stayed quiet.

I occasionally would look back at him. He was pretty much staring out the window the whole time. It was cute and slightly funny how socially awkward he was being.

When we finally arrived at the school, he jumped out of the car.

"Thanks again!" He said waving and walking away into the school.

"Anytime!" Alexis shouted back.

After that, Alexis grabbed my hand and we walked up the main steps to get into the school.

"You ready for a fun day?" She asked sarcastically. She hated the first day as much as me.

"Totally!" I shouted, sounding just a bit too cheery.

We then pushed through the doors of the big school, and just as we had suspected, we were flooded with questions. Me and Alexis just tried to navigate through the crowd in order to find our other friends. As we walked, I noticed Michael and Calum we standing in front of one of their lockers and I smiled. They waved back.

When we finally found the rest of our "group," we got caught up on everything that happened over the summer, and holy crap, there was a lot. For starters, we found out that Layla's ex-boyfriend, Caleb, cheated on his current girlfriend by sleeping with a slut.

"It's a good thing you dumped that sorry loser's ass!" Tiffany joked. She had a way of making uncomfortable situations better.

After we got all caught up, I headed to my locker, since class was going to be starting soon. I was pleasntly surprised to find out that Calum's locker was only a few down from mine.

"I guess your my new locker buddy!" I joked with him as I headed towards my first class.

"Yeah, I guess so!" He smiled back.

I looked at my schedule and noticed I had English first.

"What do you have first?" I asked, hoping that he or someone else who I was at least sort of friends with would be with me.

"Art." He replied. I slouched my shoulders as I approached the English room.

"Man, I have English." I said turning into the room. "See you later!" I waved.

I walked in and chose a seat near the back. I was pleasantly surprised to see Savannah walk in. She sat down next to me.

"Heyyy!" I said to her as she put her things down.

"Hey!" She said back. Then she leaned in so she was closer to me. "Ok, don't tell anyone this. So I started talking to this guy in the hall, and he was totally cute! I think I might like him!" She squealed.

I raised my eyebrows. "Oooh! And what was his name?" I teased.

"Uh, I'm not sure. Like Louis, or Logan, or-"

"Luke?" I asked, slightly nervous.

"Yeah! That was it!" She shouted. "He had blonde hair and blue eyes and....A lip piercing!" She swooned.

I bit down on my lip hard. I couldn't believe it. I know that she probably only said a few words to him, but it still made me feel a little hurt. It was hard to accept the fact that other girls were going to take interest in him.

"Oh, uh, that's nice..." I said, even though I was totally annoyed. For the rest of the class I barely could look at her. I think she was starting to notice but I didn't care. I was really pissed off.

When the bell finally rang, I ran out of the classroom to find Alexis. I had to vent to her, since she was the only one who would understand.

As soon as I found her. I ran up, grabbed her arm, pulled her into the bathroom, and told her everything that had happened between us. By the time I was finished, I had tears rushing down my face and I couldn't control myself. Alexis looked at me and told me to take a deep breath.

"Mia, it's okay. I can tell that he likes you and only you. Like Savannah said, she went up to him. He didn't go up to her. He most likely didn't even want anything to do with her. Trust me."

I wiped my tears and went up to the mirror. I quickly cleaned up my makeup and re-applied a layer of mascara and took a deep breath.

"You're right." I said to Alexis.

"I know, I always am," She joked, "But seriously, if it bothers you that much, you should talk to him after school."

"Okay, I will." I said smiling at her. Then, she waved goodbye as she left to go to class, leaving me alone in the bathroom.

I slowly walked out, and I realized that I was the only one in the hall. I started walking to my next class, until I heard a couple of voices.

I walked closer to where they were coming from. Whoever it was were two guys, judging by their deep voices, and I recognized one of them as Mason. The other one, or so I was guessing was...

Luke's POV

After I had started to head to my first class of the school day, I was stopped by a girl with long, brown hair. She was pretty, but nowhere near as amazing as Mia.

"Hey cutie." She said, winking at me.

"Hi," I replied, trying to push past her. I almost escaped, but she put her arm out to stop me.

"Hey, not so fast!" She teased. "What's your name? I'm Savannah!" She was so close to me I could smell her minty breath.

"Uh, Luke," I mumbled, pushing her away.

"Well, I'll see you later, I guess!" She shouted as I speed-walked away. I could care less about the girl. I was too focused on something else. I had a mission for talking to Mason about the whole Mia thing. I didn't want him to attempt to steal her from me. She had gotten too close to me. I wasn't going to let her slip away this time.

I was planning on telling him to back off during second period, when I had my free period.

After first period was over, I searched the crowd of students transitioning until I located Mason. I strolled over to him and told him we had to talk.

"Woah, dude. What the heck?" He questioned at me as I dragged him to an unoccupied classroom.

"I have something to tell you." I snarled back. His eyes went wide.

"Uh, I don't swing that way, dude..." He started.

"Not that way you moron!!" I shouted. "It's about a girl."

"Fine, whatever." He replied, looking fairly relieved.

Once we got into the classroom and everyone had cleared out of the hallway, I started talking.

"Listen punk, I don't know what you have planned going out with that other girl, but I know you like Mia more. However, I just wanted to let you know that whatever you do, don't go near her. She's MINE!" I hissed.

He looked mad. He grabbed my head and pushed me up against the wall.

"Wow, that's just sad. You honestly think I'm that low to go out with one girl, only in order to date one of her friends?!" He screamed. "I asked out that girl because I like her! Not because I want to get closer with one of her friends!"

His grip on me started to loosen and I pushed him off.

"Oh really?!" I said. I was clearly annoyed with him. "So you just randomly started liking a different girl one day, after having the hugest crush on another one? That doesn't even make sense!" I yelled.

Then, Mason looked me directly in the eyes. I could see he was hurt.

"Yes. That is exactly what happened! I love Margret! I would never use her!"

"Bullshit." I replied, still looking in his eyes. They were watering. He lowered his voice to a whisper.

"Fine. Believe what you want, but I truly do love Margret. She means the world to me, and I'm not going to let a douche like you ruin that."

I could tell he was telling the truth.

"Mason, I'm so sorry...I just got so worried. I like Mia so much and-"

He cut me off. "Save it. I get it. Ever since you told me that you liked her, I decided to back off. We have been rivals for a while now, but I think it's time we finally call for a true, eh?" He held his hand out to me in order for me to shake it in agreement.

"Deal." I said, gladly shaking his hand.

Then, all of a sudden the doorknob started to move. Mason looked at me as I approached the door. I looked out the window on the door slowly and saw someone had been eavesdropping on our conversation. They were standing right outside with their ear pressed up against the wall, as if they hadn't noticed we stopped talking. I couldn't tell who it was, so I moved a little closer. I focused on the person a bit more until I realized who it was.

"Mia?!" I asked, opening the door. She turned to look at me. I could tell she was in shock.
