13. Chapter Thirteen

Mia's POV

I had been listening in on Luke and Mason's conversation for a while, and I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Though the words they were saying were kind of muffled, I could still make out some of the information.

The words that stuck out the most to me were when Luke suggested that Mason was only using Margret to get to me. That stung. If that was true, Margret would never talk to me again. Our whole friendship would be washed down the drain. Then, I heard him say that I was his. Was he kidding right now?!

Luckily, I heard Mason freak out, confessing how much he loved Margret. It was a good thing Luke was wrong. The fact that Luke would even think that Mason was using Margret still hurt, though. Why would Luke even have an idea like that?

After I heard those words, I kind of zoned out, since I was too focused on what he had said, so I was picking up only little bits and pieces of the conversation. That was a mistake though, because I accidentally slipped and hit the door handle, and the room went quiet. However, like I mentioned before, I was in my own world, so I didn't notice when Luke opened the door and caught me spying on him.

"Mia?!" He shouted, which made me snap out of my thought.

"Uh...Hi Luke...erm...I...uh...gotta run!" I stumbled. Then, I quickly fled the scene in panic.

I couldn't believe that Luke would do something like that. Sure, he liked me, but it wasn't okay to freak out on other guys-especially my friend's boyfriend-accusing him of wanting to get with me.

I approached my class. which thankfully, was only art, so I didn't miss anything too important. I walked in and the class and everyone was staring at me. I hated when I was late to a class, though I can't deny that I loved the attention.

I approached the teacher and handed her my fake note saying I had been at the nurse's office, and then I took my seat. I had no friends in my class, so i just sat next to a girl I had never seen before. She had long, brownish-gold hair and brown eyes. She was wearing a pair of black ripped skinny jeans and a cropped tank top that said LA in cursive on it. She was really pretty, and she looked normal enough.

"Hi, I'm Mia." I said to her with a friendly smile. She turned to look at me.

"Oh, hey! I'm Hannah....I just moved here a couple weeks before school started, so I'm new here. I don't have many friends." She giggled.

"That's cool! Where are you from?" I asked, since she didn't seem to have an accent.

"Not far." She replied, "I've lived in Sydney my whole life, but just in a different part of the city!"

"Ohh...That makes so much more sense." I grinned, "Do you want to sit with my friends and I at lunch today?"

She smiled, "I would love to!"

After that, me and Hannah talked for a while until the bell rang, signaling the end of class.

"Well, I guess I'll see you later!" I yelled to her while I left the room.

"Ditto!" She shouted back.

I liked her. She was going to fit into our friend group well.

I walked to my locker to grab my lunch bag. I hated the taste of the lunch food, so I always brought my own. As I was putting my combination into my locker, I saw Luke walking down the hall, in the direction I was.

Oh crap...Please don't see me.

I tried to look away, but it was too late. His eyes met mine and my heart started beating rapidly. It was unbelievable what he could do to me. He waved and jogged over.

"Uh, hey Mia..About earlier.."

"Forget it." I snapped, sounding a little more angry then I really was. "I can't believe you would accuse Mason of using one of my closest friends, just so they could turn around and get with me!"

"Listen, Mia..I can-" I cut him off.

"Are you really that low, accusing him like that, then saying I'm yours?! I'm not some kind of object to be owned!" I screamed.

Luke looked taken aback. "Mia, I'm so sorry!"
"Just leave me alone." I spat. Luke backed away, looking hurt. Then, he turned and sped walked away. To be honest, I didn't care at the moment.

I grabbed my lunch bag and slammed my locker shut. Then, I stomped towards the lunchroom.

When I approached the cafeteria, I could hear voices of everyone talking. I opened the doors and was engulfed in the loud sounds mixed with familiar strange food smells.

I scanned the room, looking for the table in the middle where my friends and I normally sat. Sure enough, they were there. I waved and headed over. I plopped down next to Alexis and left the seat empty next to me so that Hannah could sit there. As I was waiting for her, I heard someone sit down next to me. I was confused. Then I saw Alexis look at the person sitting in the seat meant for Hannah.

"Hey Calum!"
"Hi Alexis!" He responded cheerfully.

"Cal...." I pouted. "That seat is for my friend."He turned to look at me. Then, Hannah walked in.

"Oh, I see how it is. I thought I was your friend, but I guess not." He frowned.

"Calum, you know what I mean." I laughed.

"Oh fine." He smiled, right as Hannah was approaching.

"Hi Mia! Oh...Is there not enough room? I'll go somewhere else." She said, starting to walk off.

"Wait!" I shouted. "Calum here was just leaving. He was just hanging out with us until his friends got here." I smiled.

Then, Calum got up and offered her the seat.

"Here, sorry..." He blushed, helping her into the seat.

"Thank you." She said smiling back. I looked at Alexis and whispered, "I think Cal-Pal has himself a crush..."

"Cal -Pal? What the heck is wrong with you?" She laughed, "But I do agree with the fact that he has a crush."

She gave me a cheeky smile before turning around to talk to Aubrey.

After I had introduced all of my friends to Hannah, we enjoyed our lunch with no drama, which was a pleasant surprise. Usually, the first day in the cafeteria was the breeding ground of rumors.

When it was time to go back to class, I said goodbye to all of my friends, including Savannah, even though I was still slightly mad at her. Still, I was much more annoyed with Luke. I couldn't believe what he had said. It was so rude. I honestly wasn't sure if I even liked him anymore. Even though he was normally so sweet, that comment repulsed me. I still knew that I loved him so much, though. I had to apologize.

As I walked into my science classroom, I looked at a seating chart that was posted on the wall. I found myself and then saw who I was going to be sitting next to, I almost flipped.

Yep, you guessed it.

I was sitting next to Luke.

Luke's POV

I still felt really bad that Mia overheard me talking to Mason. It wasn't fair that she had to listen to that, and honestly, I was ashamed at what I had said to Mason. I should have known that he wasn't the type to use a girl. He was too stupid to think of it, anyways.

As I headed towards my next class, I thought about how Mia had snapped at me for calling her mine. She was right. She wasn't something to be owned. She was someone to be loved, and I was pretty sure I had ruined my chances with her, even though I clearly didn't change my opinion. I had loved her for a while, and I wasn't going to give up.

I headed into my science classroom and looked at the board where everyone was gathered.

I turned to a kid named Jason. "What's this for?"
"It's a seating chart...And it looks like you are next to...uh...oh! Mia!" He said smiling as if he had just done me a huge favor. My heart dropped. I wasn't ready to see her. She hated me for crying out loud!

"Uh, thanks." I said as I headed to my seat.

This was going to be a long period. As much as I loved Mia, I was worried about what she was going to say to me.

Luckily, as I approached my seat, she didn't look up at me.

Phew...Maybe she won't say anything.

Sadly, my luck ran out when she turned to look right at me.

"Look, Luke, I'm sorry about earlier," She said while struggling to keep eye contact.

"It's fine, But you deserve and explanation." I replied."Meet me after school at the front of the school. We can walk home together."

"Okay." She said back to me with a smile, finding it easier to keep eye contact.

sighed in relief. Maybe she didn't hate me after all. Maybe all hope wasn't lost.
