5. Chapter Five

Nightime

Mia's POV

After me and Alexis said goodbye to our friends, we drove home. At first, the car ride was kind of awkward. I didn't really know what to talk to her about. It was strange, since usually it's hard to get myself to shut-up.

I guess Luke hasn't really left my mind, despite my earlier thought when I was in the mall.

All of a sudden, Alexis spoke up.

"Mia, can I tell you something?" She asked, quietly.

Relieved to just break the silence, I quickly responded, "Yeah, anything!"

"Okay then, here it goes."

She looked right in my eyes and started speaking.

"Mia, I think you should know something about Luke."

My eyes widened as she continued.

"We have been talking for a while now and he told me that....."

By now there were a few stray tears going down my cheeks. I was dreading what was coming.

"...he still doesn't remember you."

She was close to silent as she said that last part.

I felt my face turn beat red. I couldn't hold it in.

"HOW CAN HE NOT REMEMBER ME!!??" I demanded. "After all we've been through together?!"

I couldn't stop myself. Tears were rushing down my face. Luckily, we were approaching my driveway.

I pulled in and Alexis jumped out of the car.

"I'm so sorry..." She said as she hugged me tighter than she ever has before."I had to tell you though. I didn't want you to find out on your own..." She trailed off.

"It's fine," I whispered. She kissed me on my forehead and headed across the lawn to her house, right after whispering in my ear-

"Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes bad things happen to good people, and I don't know why. I just have to have faith that something good is going to come out of this."

With that, she went up to her front door and into her house.

After that, I broke down as the memories of him started flooding back into my head.

                                                  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alexis' POV
I knew that shouldn't have told Mia about what he said. I knew it would have crushed her. I knew that she would be hurt.
Yet I still did, and I don't know why.
My memory of when they last spoke came back to me.
Flashback #1:
"The friends and family of Mr. Luke Hemmings are now allowed to visit him." A woman in a nurse's uniform said. I slowly stood up with Mia right behind me.
The nurse told us to be quiet in order to not wake him.
When we went inside, we were hardly prepared for what was waiting for us.
There, in the hospital bed sat a young version of Luke. He was fast asleep.
Mia and I rushed over and he immediately woke up.
"H-h-hi Alexis...." Luke stumbled trying to say my name. Mia was still behind me, crying for him.
He leaned over and looked her in the eye.
"W-who are y-you?"
End of Flashback
I never quite understood why Luke didn't remember her. It didn't make sense at all, considering how close they were. Even the doctor didn't know.
To this day, that answer still remains a mystery.
In bed that night
Mia's POV
I couldn't go to sleep. The thought of him was still fresh in my brain. I couldn't shake it.
I got up to get a drink of water from the kitchen.
We were so close....until the night it happened. We were only 11 years old.
Flashback #2:
Luke and I had been playing tag with Alexis. She was 'it' so we both ran away and hid in the bushes by the street. We were giggling and having an amazing time like always. Then Luke turned serious. He looked me right in the eye and uttered the last few words he has ever said to me-
"Mia, I like you. A lot"
I just stared at him.
Then we heard Alexis coming. He jumped up to escape and with that he freely ran across the street, not paying attention to the car.
I tried to scream, but it was too late.
The car hit him and he was knocked out. I didn't think he was going to even live. Luckily, the car wasn't moving that fast. It only was at 35 mph
He was rushed to the hospital that night and the next day me and Alexis went to see him.
The doctor told us he probably wouldn't remember everything, especially from the impact.
But I wasn't prepared for what came after that.
End of Flashback
I shouted out of fear right then and there.
"He doesn't know who I am!"
Then I collapsed into a crying fit. My head hit something hard as I went down. Pain rushed through my body.
My mum and dad came rushing downstairs, and the last thing I remember was being carried off...
Somewhere...
I was too out I it to remember anything after that.
