66. Chapter 66 : Badlands

Helen's POV

I dreaded stepping out of the plane. Not only did I not want to see the disappointment in my Father's eyes, but I wasn't too excited for his reaction as to why I was sent back. Before I left Australia, I hugged Logan for a good long minute as he cried. He claimed he wasn't, but I saw him wipe a few tears, here and there. I was going to miss him.

My Mom once again told me this was for the best, but in reality, I knew she wasn't used to my lifestyle of living. She wasn't used to having a child as miserable as me around. Luke...Luke's sweet and he's really close with Mom and I'm really close with Dad and he can tolerate all the stupid shit I do.

I walked under the hot Los Angeles sun and made my way to the gates where my Dad said he'd be waiting. There was no welcome home group. No friends to say they're glad I'm staying. But I'm happy they aren't because I wouldn't be able to stand people around me being happy for me when I am slowly being crushed on the inside.

I spotted my Dad. He had his arms crossed and his sunglasses his eyes. I reluctantly walked towards him. Calum doesn't know that I'm back. He still thinks I'm back in Australia. And I'm not sure exactly when I'm going to tell him. Maybe when we reunite?

I pushed those thoughts aside as I approached my Dad. He took his sunglasses off and I looked at him in the eye. His face was expressionless. He had a total poker face.

"Dad," I began. "I am so sorry. I know I failed you as a daughter and you told me to be responsible because I am trained in self defense, but I just couldn't help myself!"

"Helen," He said and pulled me into a tight hug. "Oh my sweet Helen, what am I going to do with you? Your Mother told me that she couldn't handle you. That you got into another fight. I'm not surprised."

"You're not mad?" I asked and pulled away.

"Oh trust me, I'm mad. But it's you, Helen. You must have some reason as to why you kicked some guys right where it hurts."

"One of them called me a slut," I mumbled.

"I see. Well then they deserved it. But what else did you do that your Mother just couldn't handle you?" He asked.

I shrugged, "I'm in a category all my own. She's used to Luke, Dad, not me. Me, who is a time bomb and can explode then reset itself and get ready for another explosion. I'm containable."

"Helen, I've been handling you for 17 years now. You're not a time bomb. You just need to right person to be there to help you out."

I smiled slightly.

"Then how does Calum handle you?"

I pursed my lips and mentally smirked.

"Actually, don't answer that. I don't want to know," he said quickly.

I laughed.

"Did you enroll me back in school?" I asked.

"Yea, you start on Thursday," He stared at the road ahead and clutched the steering wheel. I nodded and paid attention back to the black tar road.

I wasn't excited to be back at this school. The last time I was here, well it ended badly. I was probably hated by many by now. Not to mention half of these people called me a slut, whore, and bitch for 'cheating' on Brad. Of course, I don't know who half of those people are, I still think they hate me. Unless Adin somehow managed to get them to hate me less.

Either way, I was just going to be myself and try not to start shit with any one.

Finally after being on the road for a while, Dad pulled into the driveway. I got out and stared at the house that I spent my whole life in. I'm back, for good.

For better or for worse.

Dad helped me take my things down from the truck and into my room. I was greeted by Billie who jumped happily at the sight of me and nearly knocked me down.

"Hey boy! Miss me?" I asked as if he'd reply. I patted his back and he flashed me his doggy smile. I laughed at how funny he looked. "I'm back for good."

*Four Days Later*

My phone blared that annoying alarm sound. I nearly cried at the sound of it.

"No," I mumbled. "Just 5 more minutes."

I hit the snooze and went back to sleep.

"Helen! Wake up! It's already at 7:40 get up!" Dad shouted.

I looked at the clock and my eyes widened before I bolted out of bed and into the bathroom to take a quick shower. By quick, I meant quick. I was out by 7:55 and got dressed. I didn't even try for my outfit. I just grabbed a clean shirt, pulled on my skinny jeans and black shoes. I realized I was wearing Calum's Nirvana shirt. I smiled slightly but rushed to the bathroom to blow dry my hair.

I grabbed my backpack which was incredibly light and sprinted downstairs to get an apple or something to eat.

"Bye Dad!" I said and pecked his cheek.

"Here's your schedule. Have a great day," he said as I took the paper.

"Thanks, you too."

"Bye baby girl. Be careful."

"I will," I called over my shoulder and ran outside bit my apple to have a free hand to open my car. I tossed my backpack in the passenger's seat and removed the apple from my mouth before chewing. I started the engine and looked at my phone for the first time. I had a text from Calum. I smiled, he always texted me.

Calum: Hey darling, I just wanted to let you know that I'll be busy all day and I'm not sure if I'll have time to call you, but just remember that I love you and to have a great day.

Me: Thank you for letting me know, Cal. Go out there and do your thing rock star. I love you too.

I locked my phone once again and turned up the volume on my music before backing out of the driveway and speeding down the road.

I arrived at the school 15 minutes late. GREAT!

I got out of my car and grabbed my backpack before closing the car door and locking it behind me. I looked at my schedule for the first time. Senior English first. History second. Calculus third. Physics fourth. History of music fifth and free period sixth. Awesome!

I walked onto the campus and it was empty except for the freshman and sophomore out for P.E. I made my way across the huge campus that took 8 minutes to get from one wing to another. English was in the 500s. I knew this campus like the palm of my hand and could easily know where a classroom is. I was about to enter the hallway when someone called my name.

I whipped around to see Chris Montoya walking towards me.

"Hi Chris," I greeted with a smile.

"You're back?"

"Well obviously," I said.

"What happened? I thought Adin said you weren't coming back to this place, the school I mean."

"I wasn't but I ran into some difficulties at the school in Australia so I had to come back here," I explained.

He nodded, "You're late."

I laughed, "I know.'

Chris is one of the school's dealers. If you wanted a pound of coke, Chris was your man. If you wanted to learn how to smoke a blunt, Chris was your man. If you wanted a good one-night stand, Chris was also your man. He was a nice guy, we've known each other for years when I met him back in middle school.

"Well I'm glad you're back," He smiled.

"Thank you, good to see you as well."

"Oh," He said and pulled out his wallet and grabbed a black thick card. He handed it to me and I took it.

It read; Chris Montoya with his number below it.

"Professionally made card?" I asked.

"It's my number, you know in case you ever want to.." He motioned forward.

"Uh, Chris, I had a boyfriend," I said awkwardly.

"Oh I know, I have a girlfriend too, but I gave you my card in case you ever need something to take you on Cloud 9. You know, marijuana, I'm even offering vape pens now."

"You've extended your production," I noted.

"Yea! The vape pens are selling like crazy!" He exclaimed. "But yea, that's that and just give me a call if you're interested."

"Totally," I said.

"Alright, bye now. Good to see you," he walked off.

"You too." I said.

I examined the card before putting it in my back pocket and continuing my journey to my class. I stood outside the door and pulled it open before stepping inside. The teacher was in the middle of a lecture about the new book we'd be reading. Every head turned to me. A few of my friends smiled and other student huddled and whispered to each other.

"Can I help you?" Mr. Murphy asked. He was a middle aged man who wore a dark blue blazer like a college professor. With the patches on the elbows and everything. I've heard a few things about him, most ex seniors say to get on his good side and you'll do great.

"Well, I'm in this class, where do I sit?" I asked.

Mr. Murphy extended his hand and I handed him my schedule. He examined it and nodded before giving it back.

"Sit anywhere you'd like Miss Hemmings," He said.

"Thank you," I walked down the aisle of desks and to the back of the classroom where a seat was empty. I set my backpack down and plopped on the chair. Mr. Murphy began talking again and soon people reluctantly turned back to the whiteboard,

"So you're Helen Hemmings?" A guy's voice whispered.

I turned my head and stole a quick glance at the person sitting next to me. The boy was built, his hair was ginger and freckles splotted his face and arms. I've never seen him before in my entire four years of being here.

"Yes, so what?" I asked.

"I've heard a lot about you," he said.

"Positive and negative I suppose."

"Mostly positive, but mostly as the girl who kicked Brad Chase in the balls," he whispered.

I laughed at the memory. He got what he deserved.

"Welcome back," he said before turned his attention back to the white board.

I scrunched up my nose at the thought that these people still talked about me and Brad. Sure, I'd laugh at the fact that Brad got his ass kicked by Luke and Calum, but Brad and I are nothing now. Why can't they get that through their head?

I'm with Calum now, which is the best decision I ever made.
