6. Chapter 6 : New Kid On The Block

Helen's POV

After being gone from school for 3 days, I was back. But I managed to piss off Mr. Richards, the principal.

I sat on one of the office chairs. My backpack on the floor beside me.

"Helen, this attitude you're going through, it's got to stop." Mr. Richards said sternly.

I crossed my arms across my chest.

"And that shirt you're wearing is inappropriate," He motioned to my black muscle tee that said 'F*ck The System!' in horror-movie looking white letters.

"I'm expressing myself," I retorted.

"Not to mention you ripped the pages out of Ms. Dawn's English textbook."

I slammed my fist on his desk," I didn't do it! It was an accident!"

"It doesn't matter anymore. Look I'll make a deal with you, there is a new kid that is coming to this school and I don't want any of the cheer squad to show him around the school. The last time that happened, two girls ended up fighting over that boy. It's been nearly five months that you've been here, you know the school pretty well. If you show him around the school, I'll excuse your four days of detention."

I thought for a second. "Deal," I finally said.

He nodded.

"But Mr. Richards, why me?" I asked.

"You don't try hard to fit in. In fact you don't try at all. Don't want this new kid to be scared by the fact that our school is over run by a group of girls that have fake noses and Brazilian hair," He replied.

I snorted.

"Alright Miss Hemmings, give this note to Ms. Dawn and if she has questions tell her to call me," He gave me a pass to my first period,  because I was several minutes late. I didn't mind.

"Thanks" I took the note and grabbed my pack before heading out the office door.

I left the main office and stepped into the hallway.

It was empty and the freshly waxed floor shined under the florescent lights above.

I put my earbuds in and blasted Panic! At The Disco.

I made my way through the abandoned hall and found my classroom.

I grabbed the handle and pulled it open.

My feet shuffled inside and the whole class, including Ms. Dawn, were staring at me.

"Decided to show?" Ms. Dawn asked.

I handed her the note without question and made my way to my desk that sat in the empty corner.

She continued her lecture and I listened with one ear.

Finally the bell rang and we rushed to get our stuff in our backpacks and to 2nd period.

I slung my backpack over my shoulder and followed everyone out the classroom door.

Chemistry is one of those classes that involved your full and undivided attention. And if you didn't give it your full attention, you'd get lost quickly.

I pushed myself up on the metal stool, like I do every day and was ready for the lesson.

"What are these called?"

I looked up and saw Rachel Simons asking Evan Rodriguez what a graduated cylinder was.

"Uh, that's a graduated cylinder," He replied.

"Oh!" Rachel exclaimed.

"Yea," Evan said slowly.

Rachel was one of those girls that acts dumb just so she can get attention. I rolled my eyes at the ridiculous question she just asked and continued to right down the agenda in my spiral notebook.

Slowly the entire student body stared pouring through the door and soon after the bell rang and class began.

"Class, today is gonna be a work day," Mr. Potter said. "Pull out your textbook and go to page 250."

The sound of thick heavy textbooks being slammed on the tabletops rang through the room.

Followed by pages flipping.

"Do questions 1 through," He hesitated, "20. Yea, ten of these will be apart of the test you'll be taking on Friday. It's Monday so it's a great opportunity to refresh your mind with some of this information. You may listen to your own music as long as you are working and if you insist on SnapChatting, please turn the flash off."

We all cracked a small laugh.

I started my work. Copying and answering the questions in my notebook.

Mr. Potter always has good music playing.

At the moment it was 'Stairway To Heaven' by Led Zeppelin.

Mr. Potter turned it up a bit louder.

I was on my 8th problem when the phone rang.

Mr. Potter answered it, "This is Mr. Potter."

He listened.

"She's one of my finest students, what did she do?" He asked.

"I see. I'll send her up right away," He hung up. "Miss Hemmings."

I looked up.

"Mr. Richards wants to see you in his office."

The classroom erupted into a fit of "ooohs".

I bit my lip and began packing my stuff up. I closed the textbook before zipping my backpack up and sliding off the stool.

Mr. Potter chuckled and said, "I like that shirt." He pointed to my shirt.

"Thank you," I smiled and walked out the door.

Mr. Potter said Mr. Richards wanted to see me, but I didn't do anything wrong.

I wasn't even sure I was in trouble or not.

I slowly made my way to the front office and when I entered the door, the secretary motioned for me to go to Mr. Richards' office.

I did and when I went inside a boy was sitting on the office chair.

His chocolate brown hair was up in a quiff, but not like Luke did it. His sharp jawline was perfect and he had cheekbones to match.

When the door closed behind me, he looked at me. He had hazel colored eyes and relatively tanned skin. He was handsome but I had to remind myself I was with Calum.

"Ah, Helen. I would like you to meet Logan Rodgers he's new," Mr. Richard said.

"Hi," I said lightly.

"Okay, the two of you will spend the day together and I hope you will show him around Helen," Mr. Richards said.

"Yea, no problem," I replied.

"Great! Logan has his schedule. Welcome to our school, Logan."

Logan smiled a little and thanked him.

He got up and he was about  6 feet tall. Logan grabbed his backpack and I opened the door, he followed. I exited the front office.

"So, my name is Helen Hemmings as you heard."

"I heard, but you already know my name." He said in a deep American accent. "I suppose you came from America too?"

"Yea, I moved from California, my Mum and brother live here so I moved back." I explained.

"Ah, I see. I came from Las Vegas, Nevada," He said.

"That's cool. Pretty sure you partied alot," I said.

"Just sometimes," He said sarcastically.

I laughed slightly.

"Can I see your schedule?" I asked.

He nodded and handed the paper to me.

I scanned the paper and a shiver ran up my spine.

"Oh, that's weird," I said.

"What?" Logan asked.

"Our schedules are practically the same, but you have biology instead of chemistry," I said and furrowed my eyebrows.

"That's.....kinda creepy," Logan said slowly.

"Yea," I nodded. "Well, I'll show you around and then take you to your bio class."

"Cool," Logan said.

We walked side-by-side through the hallways as I showed him our English, Math, Art, Gym, and History class.

"This is biology with Mrs. Anderson," I motioned to the wooden door.

"Alright. Hey can you show me my locker?" Logan asked.

"Sure," I looked at the locker number and went to the row that had the same first digit.

After a couple of minutes of searching I finally found it.

"Here it it," I said and slapped the metal door.

"Thanks. Is there anything else I need to know about this school?"

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"Well there is always that one group of jocks or cheerleaders that overpower the rest of the students."

I nodded, "There's the football team and Queen Bee Rebecca and her army of minions."

"Sounds like The Plastics," Logan said.

I laughed, "True."

Suddenly the bell rang for 3rd period.

"That's the bell," I said.

"So am I suppose to go to class now?" Logan asked.

"Yes, don't wanna ditch on the first day, now do we?" I questioned.

"True," He laughed.

We made our way to our class.

I sat at the lunch table I shared with the boys.

My lunch tray sat in front of me. I poked the food around. Nowadays, my appetite wasn't as strong as it used to be.

I looked up and Venus was walking towards me.

I didn't expect for us to become friends but she just started sitting with me at lunch and talking to me in History and Art.

"Hey Helen," She set her lunch tray on the table and slid into a seat.

"Hey," I mumbled.

"What's up?" She asked.

"It's one of those days," I replied and looked at her.

She nodded and didn't question me further.

It was days like these when I missed Calum the most. When I would give up anything just to have a face-to-face conversation with him.

I sighed.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa, cutie heading our way," Venus whispered.

"Huh?" I looked up and Logan was walking towards us.

He held an apple in one hand and a water bottle in the other. He casually walked towards us, ignoring the shocked stares that were given to him.

Rebecca was glaring at me and I knew that she had already tried flirting with him.

Obviously it didn't work.

Logan sat next to me and bit his apple.

Venus and I were quiet.

He swallowed, "What's up?"

Venus squealed. Logan furrowed his eyebrows at her.

"Oh, Logan, this is Venus Dean. Venus, this is Logan Rodgers," I said.

"Nice to meet you Venus," Logan greeted.

Venus stuttered, "Nice to meet you too."

"So how's school so far?" I asked.

Logan groaned, "I kid you not, ten girls flirted with me."

"Did you see anything you liked?" I asked.

"No," He replied.

The conversation didn't return to that and instead we talked about music and movies.

It was good to be surrounded by friends again.

I walked across the school lot and towards Luke's car.

School was finally over and I couldn't be happier.

"Hey Hemmings."

I turned, Logan was four parking spaces away.

"Hey," I called.

"That's a nice car you go there," He said.

"Thanks, it's my brother's."

He gave me a thumbs up.

"How man more weeks of school do we have left?" He asked.

"About two and a half," I replied.

"Cool. Alright I'll see you tomorrow."

"See you," I said and got in the car.

I turned the engine on and backed out of the lot.

I pressed on the gas pedal and gained speed.

My eyes drifted to the rear view mirror. A black BMW was behind me.

I paid it no attention and continued to drive and listen to music on the radio.

It was a short drive back home and I rolled into the driveway.

I turned the engine off and pulled the key out.

I opened the door and grabbed my backpack before closing the door behind me.

"You do not live here."

I turned and Logan was leaning against the BMW, across from my house.

"Been living here for about months," I replied.

"This is so weird," Logan said.

"It is," I called. "Bye Logan."

"See you."

I started walking to the front door and unlocked it.

My phone rang.

The caller ID read 'Calum.'

It's the first time he's called me since our last talk.

I tapped the screen.

"Hello babe," I said softly.

He didn't reply but I heard a sniffle and I knew he was crying.
