Leaves of Lines [Poetry collection]

A compilation of my poetry ranging across the board. [I'm not depressed, by the way]

So far, these are all published as separate movellas, so you can either comment here on the whole, or if you want to leave comments on a specific poem, feel free to find that one in my list. Either way is fine with me! Photo cred: https://www.flickr.com/photos/109065142@N02/sets

5. Wonder

I know how the seasons change,

I know how it snows,

I know how the clouds move,

I know how the green grass grows.

At five years old how proud you are

to know these little things;

with every bit of knowledge

your tiny heart just sings.

I know how the cars go,

I know how the sky is blue.

I know the age of the Earth,

but is it all true?

At ten years old, your wonder grows,

stretching far and wide.

You question, question, ask away;

from you no answers hide.

I know what makes up matter,

I know how the lights turn on,

I know my proper grammar,

but that old wonder’s gone.

At fifteen years old, life grows dry,

living day to day.

The importance of style and image rise

while wonder fades away.

I know the works of Shakespeare,

I know Chaucer, Poe and Dickens.
I know the secrets of the universe,

but still life’s pace quickens.

At twenty years old, you rush about,

from there to here to there.

No time for thought, no time to ask,

no time to find to care.

I know how to manage finance,

I know how to cook and feed.

I know how to do the laundry,

but  for wonder, there’s no need.

At forty years old, you slip away,

into the same routine.

Your only time to wonder

is while you cook and clean.

I know how a bird is born,

I know from where they come.

I know I’ve seen it all before,

but a new life’s just begun.

As life comes full circle,

to return to its old start,

every little detail

is its own piece of art.

Though you’ve seen a million places,

pass before your eyes,

The wonder’s ever present,

in each little surprise.

The clouds form shapes again,

the stars return to song.

You wonder with all your heart,

why it took this long.

I know how the seasons change,

I know how it snows.

I know why the clouds move

and why the green grass grows.

And yet I don’t know one thing,

no matter how I try,

I can’t quite figure out,

just what’s the reason why.

But when you think of way back when

of a child with wondering mind,

there’s more than the eye can see,

waiting for you to find.

It seems odd to go our whole lives through

demanding, “why?” so loud and wild.

When the simple answer truly lies

in wondering like a child.

So let your mind out from its cage,

and maybe you will see

just how terribly important

wondering can be.

I know the rules of physics,

I know Henry’s law,

But I really knew nothing,

until like a child I saw.

The beauty of the world right here,

the gentle sights and sounds.

The strange ways of nature

where knowledge truly abounds.

So keep wonder near and close

to the forefront of your mind,

so that as life goes on,

it won’t be left behind.

If one lesson can be had from this,

one message hidden under,

let this be what you take:

Don’t forget to wonder.
