5. Chapter Five

"What I feel for you seems less of earth and more of a cloudless heaven." –Vitor Hugo

We finally arrive at City Hall after taking a detour to go pick Emily, I see Holden and Max sitting on the steps of City Hall. The three of us walk up the steps to meet me. I ask Holden did he bring the rings. “Don’t worry Rei I brought the rings.” he tells me. Suddenly Max pulls me aside. “Reichen, Gwen must be pregnant, that’s why you are marrying her, isn’t it.” he says with a grin on his face.  “For the second time, no Gwen is not pregnant, last time I checked I can’t get a woman pregnant.” I say to Holden becoming ignored with his funny jokes. “Yeah I forgot that, you must really love her then.”

“Yeah I do Max, I know it’s crazy but I’m madly in love with her. Hell it only took me one day to realize that. Just thinking about, this morning a was a bachelor, several hours later I’m going to be a married man.”

“Yeah, you’re right that is pretty crazy. Holden and I are really happy for you Reichen, I always thought you would be the last one of us to get married, so it looks like you beat me and Holden to it. So when are you going to tell your families the good news.”

I tell them the Justice is waiting for us in his office. We all walk into the Justice’s office. The room seems smaller to me than remember as a child. Justice Walker is standing in front of his desk. Gwen and I fill out the marriage license. We turn back to Justice Walker who directs us to stand side by side in front of him.

“Are the groom and bride ready.

“Yes.” Me and Gwen say in unison.

“Okay I’m going the give you index cards with the traditional vows on it, just repeat them or you can say whatever comes from your heart. Okay, are your witnesses ready?”

Yes we’re ready," They all say.

“Okay let’s get this wedding started, Reichen and Guinevere can you face each other. Dear friends, on behalf of Reichen and Guinevere I welcome you all for this marriage ceremony. We are here today to encourage, celebrate and support the covenant these two people Reichen and Guinevere are going to make and to share in the joy that Reichen and Guinevere experience as they pledge their love and commitment to each other. We rejoice in the manner God has led them to each other and got them to the place where they now stand.”

“Reichen, the woman who stands by your side is going to be your wife. She will look to you for comfort, for support, for love, for understanding, for encouragement, and for protection. You must never take her for granted, and always stand by her for good or ill.”

I look down at the index card, then back at Gwen. I can’t believe I’m marrying Gwen. I can feel my heart beating faster and faster I can hardly contain myself. I feel like I’m the luckiest SOB on the planet.

“Reichen you can say your vows now.”

“Okay, I, Reichen, take you, Gwen, to be my lawfully wedded wife, my constant friend, my partner in parenthood, I will cherish our union and love you more each day than I did the day before. I will trust you and respect you, laugh with you and cry with you, loving you faithfully through good times and bad, regardless of the obstacles we may face together. I give you my hand, my heart, and my love, from this day forward for as long as we both shall live.”

“Guinevere, the man who stands by your side is going to be your husband. He will look to you for comfort, support, love, understanding and encouragement. You must never take him for granted and always stand by him for good or ill.”

“Okay Gwen you can say your vows now.”

“I, Guinevere, take you Reichen, to be my friend, my lover, the father of my children and my husband. I will be yours in times of plenty and in times of want, in times of sickness and in times of health, in times of joy and in times of sorrow, in times of failure and in times of triumph. I promise to cherish and respect you, to care and protect you, to comfort and encourage you, and stay with you, for all eternity.”

“Reichen, since it is your intention to marry, join your right hands and declare your consent. Do you take Guinevere to be your lawful wedded wife to have and behold from this day on, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, as long as you both shall live?”

“I Do.” I say with love in my voice.

“Guinevere, do you take Reichen to be your lawful wedded husband, to have and behold from this day on, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, as long as you both shall live?”

“I Do.” Gwen says.

“The wedding ring symbolizes unity, a circle unbroken, without beginning or end. And today Reichen and Guinevere exchange these rings as confirmation of their vows to join their lives, to work at all times to create a life that is complete and unbroken and to love each other unconditionally. May the Lord bless these rings which you give to each other as the symbol of your love and fidelity.”

Reichen, take this ring and place it on your bride’s finger, and state your pledge to her, repeating after me:

“With this ring I thee wed. I offer you my hand, and my heart as I know they will be safe with you. All that I am I give to you and all that I have I share with you.”

Guinevere, take this ring and place it on your groom’s finger, and state your pledge to him, repeating after me:

“With this ring I thee wed. I offer you my hand, and my heart as I know they will be safe with you. All that I am I give to you and all that I have I share with you.”

“Until now Guinevere and Reichen have spent each moment of their lives as separate individuals. But from this day on, and every day after this day shall be shared and spent as one. By the power enthroned in me, by the state of New York, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may now kiss your bride.”

Gwen and I kiss, then the room explodes with clapping and shouts of congratulations.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you Mr. and Mrs. Reichen Devereaux ." Justice Walker says aloud.

Everyone comes over to us, to congrats us. Gwen and I have our arms around each other, as Holden and Max comes back over to us. Both Max and Holden take turns kissing Gwen on her cheek, and introducing themselves to her.

“It’s nice to meet you Gwen,” Max and Holden said.

I see Holden walk back over to Emily, the two of them seem to be having a really good conversation, then Holden puts his hands on Emily’s back. It seems Cupid has struck again, I say to myself.

“So where are you two going for your honeymoon?” Max asked.

“I’m we haven’t decided yet.” my new bride says.

“Yeah, we haven’t even told our parents yet, so after we tell them we will decide where to go then.”

“Well I’ll leave you two newlyweds to yourselves. I’m about to go home and call it a night. See you guys later.”

Gwen and I say goodbye to Max, we turn our attention back to Emily and Holden, who are still talking to each other. Gwen looks at me with grin on her beautiful face.

“What.” I say to her.

“It’s looks like we might be having a another wedding in the distant future.”

"I wouldn't surprise me, Holden is a hopeless romantic."

"You are a hopeless romantic too you know.”

"Yeah, only until I met you."

We turn I'll attention back to Justice Walker, who is gathering up his things and getting ready to leave. Gwen and I head over to him to thank him, for officiating the our marriage ceremony for us. We say our good goodbyes to him, walking out of City Hall onto the still busy street of New York City. I motion Gwen over to the waiting limo, we both enter and I instruct the driver to takes us back to my apartment. As the limo is going through the manic New York City traffic, Gwen and I staring at each other as if we are in some kind of trance. I gently take Gwen's hand and places a kiss on the palm of her hand.

"So Mrs. Deveraux when can you move all your stuff into my apartment."

"I can start this weekend." I'm really nervous about telling my family about our marriage."

"Oh sweetheart don't worry, whatever happens we will get through it together."

We finally arrive back at my apartment, we take the elevator up to my apartment, before we enter I scoop Gwen my arms.

"Reichen what are you doing?"

"I'm carrying my new bride over the threshold." Gwen smiles at me, and tightens her arms around my neck. I carry her through the the doorway, into the center of my living room. I continue onto to my bedroom. Gwen and I shed our clothes and hop into to bed, I spread the covers over and Gwen nestles into my arms with her head laying on my chest. Gwen begins tracing her fingers down my chest, that sends a burning inferno through me.

"Yes sweetheart."

"I want us to have a baby."

I look down at Gwen, her confession knocks me for a loop, I always thought it would couple more years before I decided to get marriage and children, but that was before I had met Gwen. The idea gives me a rush.

"I would love to have a baby with you. We did pretend to make a baby before we got married so."

That puts a smile on Gwen's face, I would give anything in this world, to be able to get Gwen pregnant, Gwen looks at me as if she had read my mind. "Don't be sad my love, we will have children together."

"I know."

"We can get in touch with an adoption agency next week, if that's okay with you."

"Sweetheart that's more than okay."

I beginning tracing my fingers down Gwen's chin, at that Gwen begins yawning, I immediately spread the covers over us.

"Welcome home, Mrs. Devereaux."

"It's good to be home, Mr. Devereaux ."
