The Paw Academy

What happens when a girl joins something she hates the most?

10. One Year, Seven Months Later

“You know what you have to do right?” I glanced over my shoulder to look at Geoff “Yes. I do.” I continued looking over the vehicle, distracting my jumbled mind. “And if you have any trouble out there just tell-.” I turned back to him. “Tell Rose to contact Turq, immediately.” I mimicked his voice. He chuckled smiling. “I don’t sound like that. But I am serious. Any Trouble Sera. One time and that’s it.” He looked me in the eye. I nodded “Alright Seraphina, let’s go.” Ryder pushed between us. I heard Geoff growl and I put my tail to his mouth. He looked at me and I shook my head “I got this.” I glanced over my shoulder to watch Ryder get to climb into the driver’s side of the vehicle. I looked back to Geoff and smiled. “I’ll be back before you know it.” He nodded “You better be.” He looked at Ryder then back at me and turned to walk away. I sighed before climbing into the passenger side of the vehicle. I noticed Ryder looking at me and I looked at him. “What?” I felt irritated. “Nothing Love.” He chuckled as he started the vehicle up. “Don’t call me that,” I grumbled just loud enough to be heard over the engine. As we pulled off, I stared down the road we were planned to take. “I still don’t know what you see in him.” I glanced at him “I don’t see how that’s any of your business.” I looked back at the road “Excuse me?” He glanced at me then back at the road, turning the wheel slightly to avoid a hole in the road. “It’s none of your business Ryder. What I do with anyone is none of your business.” I turned my head and looked directly at him. I noticed his jaw tighten. “It is my business if you hadn’t noticed.” He grumbled almost to a growl. “How is my personal life any of your business?” He shook his head “You’re my girl. Anything you do is my business.” I shook my head and sighed. “Ryder for the last time. I am not, nor will I ever be your girl. I am no one’s girl.” He blinked. “Ryder, I am not interested in you.” He inhaled quickly and I noticed the increase in speed of the vehicle. I exhaled and continued looking at the road.

“I’ll go set up the tent, you can start the fire.” I walked to the back of the vehicle and opened the door to it. I pulled a black bag out by its string and dropped it on the ground. I noticed something small and white fly out. It floated around a bit before gently floating to the ground. I stepped toward it before the wind could take it and gently opened it. I smiled when I realized it was deliberately left by Geoff.

“I hope your recon is successful babe.”

XOXO -Geoff

I stared at the note a moment longer. He never used ‘babe’ with me before. He’s never said it. I smiled, this was a good start. I gently folded it back together before putting it into the pocket of the tents bag. I then began to pull the tent to the open area nearby. I walked back toward the vehicle and realized the trunk was now empty. “Hey, Ryder?” He pulled his head up from looking down at something. “Hmm?” He held some sticks in his mouth and began to move them to a ring of rocks he had put together. “Where’s the other tent?” I looked back at the trunk. “What other tent? I only brought one, to save space.” I looked back at him “So you intend to share one tent?” He dropped the sticks and looked over at me “Is that a problem?” I nodded “Obviously, it’s a problem. We can’t share a tent Ryder.” He shrugged “I don’t see why not. It’s not like anything is going to happen.” I stared at him for a moment longer. “It better not.” I grumbled turning away from him. Pulling the tent by its string. I pulled it until it was just ahead of the soon-to-be fireplace. I sat down pulling the sides of the bag to stretch it out enough with my paws to pull the tent out. As I put the tent together, I noticed Ryder watching me. “If your done with that, you can go scout around.” I grumbled loud enough for him to him. I brushed the ground quickly with my tail, sending dirt toward him. “Don’t treat me like I’m a low-class cadet.” He grumbled back. “Then stop drooling like one.” I growled, he blinked before growling. He turned away, padding away. My A.I appeared at once. “It’s Alright Seraphina.” I shook my head “It’s not. We need to keep an eye on him. He’s going to slow me down and I don’t have time for that. I want to complete this recon without any trouble.” I pull the strings tighter to tie the ends off. I glance at Rose and she’s watching me. “I don’t trust him either but it’s just you two out here. I’m ready to contact Geoff or Blyke at any time you need me to.” I smiled at her, “Thanks.” She nodded and sat down. As I tied the end off I sighed. “What’s next to do? I gave Ryder one of mine to keep him from gawking at me. Rose chuckled “Well, you could do the same actually. Just in the opposite direction.” I looked around, then toward the direction Ryder had gone. I turned away from it and began trotting away. Rose was at my side within a moment. After a while of trotting I began to run but soon turned. “Seraphina, up.” I quickly climbed up a tree and crouched on a branch. I made sure to pull my tail up with me. Soon a group of three very dark wolves stopped just in front of the tree I was in. “They’ve been following me?” Rose nodded “I just sensed them.” They began to spread out, sniffing around each of the trees. I began to pull myself up higher into the leaves to hide myself. One of the three sniffed around the tree I was in and soon looked around. “It stops at this tree.” The other two wolves walked toward my tree sniffing it as well. One looked up into the tree and I held my breath. “You don’t think she can climb trees do you?” The wolf looked around the trees. One of the others, mostly likely a male chuckled “She’s a wolf, not a cat.” The wolf from before, a female nodded “Should we report it?” The male shook his head “No point, we’re out of our own area as it is. No need to worry about it.” He trotted off, guessingly toward their home. I waited a while before climbing down “Anyone else around here?” Rose appeared next to me. She shook her head “No, they’re still headed away from you and the camp. Nothing else to worry about.” She then disappeared and I began to run back to the camp. I was halfway back when I literally ran into another wolf. We impacted so hard that it knocked the breath out of me. I was stopped by a tree as she slid to a stop somewhat near me. I pulled myself up “Oh, I’m so sorry. I didn’t smell or hear you coming.” The wolf lifted her head then herself. Her cloud grey fur was puffed out as if she were afraid. Her bright green eyes wide. As she stood, I noticed a small bundle of fur near her. She looked around quickly “Are you alright?” She looked back at me and shrugged slightly. “Well, I’ll be going then.” I turned to leave “Wait. Miss, please.” I stopped looking back at the wolf. She now held the small bundle by it’s scruff and I turned to face her. It’s a pup. A small one too. “Miss please, I beg you of you to take him.” I stepped back “Is this your son?” She nodded carefully not to shake the small pup. His fur was cloud grey but almost white like hers, his nose was light grey as well. “Please. Take him, he will die if he stays with me.” She placed him at my paws and I looked at him then back at her. I soon heard barking coming from the distance. “She had to have gone this way.” She still looked at me. I picked up the pup by its scruff and hid in a nearby bush. I watched her as she looked on toward the wolves racing toward her. A dark brown muscular male with white ears and left front paw appeared first ahead of a lean black male with brown patches all over his body. They began to circle her “Where is it?” The female sat down looking at the brown male. “What do you mean, Chine? Where is what?” The brown male leapt to stand right in front of her, nearly touching noses. He growled “You know exactly what I mean.” The black male stood near watching “Where’s the runt Vera?” She looked to the black male “What runt?” Chine growled pacing “The runt you call your son.” Vera looked back the Chine “Oh my son. He’s fine, great actually.” She smiled and Chine was visibly growing impatient. He leaped at her pinning her to the ground and I began to leap out of the bush and help but she looked toward the bush and shook her head. “Where is he, Vera?” The brown male asked as Chine placed his paw on her throat, she looked at him and shook her head. “I will never tell you where he is. You’ll only kill him. I will not let that happen.” Chine growled sheathing his claws so they sank into her throat. “It’s your own fault Vera. You know as well as one else that the runt’s have to die or they won’t last, they are a waste of prey and we cannot afford wasted prey.” The brown male shook his head, “We would have sent him away, to test him. If he survived a day on his own, then he would have let him stay but you taking him away yourself only proved our point.” Vera frowned looking at the black male. “You’re lying, you would have killed him on the spot. You’ve never done that before to any of the other smaller born pups. You’re a bunch of pup killers!” She growled. Chine put all his weight on her throat. “Chine.” He glanced at the black male before stepping off her. “Finish her and come back home.” His voice was clipped. “With pleasure.” Chine growled. The black male glanced at Vera before trotting off. Then I realized, that’s the father. I glanced at the pup, he was still huddled to himself. As I looked back to Vera she looked at me. My breath caught in my throat. Chine towered over her. He growled, “Didn’t I tell you Vera. He’s not father material, and you only had one pup.” He shook his head irritated. Then he snarled before sinking his teeth into her throat. She yelped and I glanced at the pup before leaping out of the bush. I growled, showing my teeth. “Let her go!” I barked, my fur fluffed out. I held my tail just over my back, my ears laid back. Chine released her throat and looked up at me. He growled before stepping toward me “Who are you? What are you doing here?” I glared at him. “Don’t you dare hurt her.” I growled, He launched at me and I moved to the side. He landed then attempted to launch at me again. When he failed again, he growled at me then turned and ran off. “And don’t come back.” I shouted after him. “Sera.” Rose called to me and I turned to look at her. She stood next to Vera who laid on the ground with a puddle of blood at her throat. She coughed and a few droplets came out. She stared ahead of her. I placed my paw on her side and she glanced up at me. “Please take care of him.” She breathed before closing her eyes. I noticed her body going limp. Rose looked up at me and I shook my head “What now?” She asked “Usually I ask you that.” I chuckled and she watched me. I stood up and stretched “Well, we do what we came here to do in the first place. She appeared next to the bush. “But what about him?” I pushed my head through the bush and looked at the pup who was beginning to stir. I carefully picked him up by his scruff. “So you’re taking him?” She caught up to me as I began to walk back toward our camp. “Yes. I can’t very well leave him out here. You heard those wolves. They want to kill him.” Rose shrugged “I guess you’re right.”
