48. Betrayal

The room I entered was small and dimly lit. Pansy shut the door behind me and I drew my wand, swirling around to her. However she wasn't pointing her wand at me as I had expected but looked at me instead.
"Put your wand down, Granger," she exclaimed. "I didn't even bring my wand with me."
Slowly, I lowered my wand and placed it back in my pocket. For a moment we simply stood there, watching each other.
"Draco has it in for you," she broke the silence. "I don't know what he is planning but you should take care."
Confused I stared at her.
"Why would I believe you," I snarled at her. "You hate me."
She looked at me uneasily. Overthinking her answer, she paced up and down in front of me.
"You're right," she finally agreed. "I do hate you. A lot actually. Nevertheless, I really would like to warn you. The other day he was talking in his sleep as he fell asleep in the common room."
She paused briefly to look at me intently, most likely guessing my reaction.
"Mione, Dark Lord, Family, Failure and Disappointment. These were the words," she recalled. "He was mumbling them over and over again. Whatever he has in store for you, it's nothing good."
I nodded in agreement, paralyzed by her words. What was he planning? To kill me?
"Take care, that's all." Pansy repeated herself and exited.

Over the next few days I realized Pansy had been right. Something was clearly going on with Draco, though I couldn't quite put my finger on it yet. He would look at me again but in a rushed kind of way as to not catch my attention. Draco was keeping a lot to himself and wasn't to be seen at mealtimes at all anymore. Whatever he planned, seemed to be a lot bigger than I had expected. I decided to talk to him about it and caught him after Potions, a week after my meeting with Pansy.
"What's the matter with you?" I asked him more concerned about him than myself.
He looked around uneasily, before looking me in the eyes for the first time in weeks.
"Let's talk somewhere more private," he requested and headed for the third floor. "This is not a public matter."
I knew at once where we were heading to and started fidgeting. The last time we had been in the room of requirement, we had the fight that caused him to ignore me the past three weeks.
"Can't we talk it out somewhere else?" I asked him concerned.
Draco shook his head in response and headed for the stairs. Not in the mood to argue, I followed him and climbed the stairs two at a time. He stopped in front of the door and looked at me intently. As if rethinking our meeting, he stared at me for a while before pushing the door open.
"I really am sorry," he said as I entered. "Mione."
The door fell shut behind me and I heard Draco's footsteps faint away.
