Chapter One

The city is a different place. Sure, I lived in a city my whole life, but this city is different. This city doesn't have murders take place every night. No violence and many more busy residents with successful, usual jobs.

My first priority is trying to find somewhere to stay. I bet I would be perfectly fine on the streets, but if I want to develop a plan on getting Aria back, I need good sleeps.

The sidewalk, which I'm walking along, is full of people rushing to get to places. I'm taking my time, while everyone else is pushing and shoving past each other. I still don't know where I am. I'm lucky I wondered upon this city though.

The next thing I know, I'm on the ground, not knowing what happened. I open my eyes and see a boy with many tattoos and piercings holding his hand out for me, asking if I'm alright.

Grabbing his hand, he pulls me up and makes sure I'm okay.

"You okay man?" He asks.

He has black hair that is perfectly done. Tattoos covering his arms, neck, and probably every other place on his body. He has a lip piercing, ears pierced, nose pierced and even his eyebrow is pierced. I'm pretty intimidated by him. And that was an understatement.

He's wearing a black t-shirt and black skinny jeans. Very simple but something that shows 'don't mess with me'. He has black boots on that are a little taller than his ankles and his wrists are covered with bracelets. I glance at them and they have various band names that I've never heard before and odd logos for random things.

"I'm fine. Thanks," I say and brush my clothes off.

"Yeah. Umm what's your name?" He asks, while leading me to a nearby coffee shop.

"Louis. What's yours?" I question back.

"Zayn," he simply replies.

"Nice to meet you," I say as we walk into the quaint shop. The shop on the outside looks like a 'hole in the wall' kind of joint, but it's actually quite nice.

"You too. So where are you from?" He asks.

"A small town in the middle of know where," I answer.

"Interesting. What was it like there?" He orders our coffees and then looks back at me for my answer. I think he ordered to plain coffees, which is fine with me. I haven't had coffee for years. Could never afford it.

"Umm, violent. I'm sorry, but I don't have any money," I say referring to the coffee.

"Don't worry about it," he smiles and goes to hand me my coffee. I smile back and thank him. I take the warm cup into my hands and let the warm liquid flow down my throat and into my stomach. Delicious.

"Are you from here?" I ask.

"Born and raised here," he says. We walk out of the shop and start heading a random direction, but I'm pretty sure he knows where he's going.

"Uh, what city are we in?" I question. We cross the street quickly because there are many cars that look that they would be willing to run us over just to get to wherever they're headed.

"Are you crazy?" He looks at me like I have two heads.

"I don't think so," I laugh.

"This is New York City," he says and spreads his arms out as if presenting the city to me.

"Really? This is New York City? Didn't think I would ever make it here," I say.

I take another look around. Before when I arrived, I didn't think much of the city, but this is New York City. I need to look around and take in my surroundings. There are many tall buildings with many billboards and logos and flashing lights. It's a lot of things that I've never been exposed to before. There are pictures of people in their underwear and something called McDonalds and what is Broadway?

"What brings you here?" He asks. Hmm. Should I tell him? 'My best friend slash love of my life has been kidnapped and I need immediate help. Do you want to come and join my crazy life? Oh by the way, you can get killed.' I don't think it's a good idea to tell him.

Aria. She's alone and probably getting hurt and every second I waste could be one second closer to her death. I need to tell him. He may be the only one who can help him.

"I actually have a huge problem," I say.

"We can talk about it in my apartment," he says and leads me to an apartment building. It's brown and pretty tall. Pretty much like all of the other buildings around here.

We walk inside and it's plain. Nothing too special. We go to the elevator and once it comes, we go inside and he presses the '7' button. It takes us to the seventh floor. When it dings we get out and he leads me to his apartment. Number '706'. I need to remember that.

He takes out his keys and unlocks the door. The apartment is actually really neat. Much neater than I expected from someone like Zayn. I guess I should not have judged him. He seems like a nice guy.

"Take a seat," he offers. I accept and get comfortable on his light brown sofa. He sits down on the other side and waits for me to start explaining. I take another sip of my coffee and prepare for everything that I'm going to tell him.

"There's a girl. She's my best friend. Her name is Aria. And in the town we lived in, no one was ever safe, but it's the only place we knew how to live in. We knew how everything went and we knew how to make sure we were safe. Turns out, we were wrong. Two days ago she was kidnapped and it was all my fault. I let her slip away from me. I didn't put up enough of a fight, I let them take her," I say and end up with my head in my hands.

"Hey, it's okay. I'm going to help you out. Okay? I'm going to go. I don't care what happens, I'm helping you. We're going to fix this," he says and soothingly rubs my back to calm me down.

"Thank you. You really don't have to do this," I say.

"I want to," he says.

"I just need to let you know that I have no money," I say.

"That's okay, I don't mind helping you out," he says and I lift my head from my hand.

"You'd really do that?" I ask.

"Of course. You're my friend now," he smiles. I smile back.
