1. Do I cry?

I got the call when I was skyping Akihiro, my one and only friend that I met on a pen pal website, he lives in Tokyo Japan. He was making this ridiculous face when my phone went off. I picked up my cheap flip phone and answered the call. "Is this Miss Hayla Zincter?" someone asked. At the time I didn't think much of that phone call. "Yes, who is this?" I responded. There was a brief silence and then the person responded "This is The California Hospital Medical Center, I'm calling in regards to your parents." the person responded. My eyes widened. "What happened to them?"  I asked. There was another brief silence "I think that it be best if you got down here as soon as possible." they said. "Hey, Hey, Hayla, whats up?" Akihiro asked. I looked up at him and shook my head "Look, I have to go." I said and closed my laptop lid before he could protest. "I'll be down there immediately." I told the person on the other line, then I hung up.

I slid off my bed and grabbed my backpack. I slipped it on and ran out of my small room. We lived in a two room apartment in downtown LA. I ran out of the apartment and to the elevator. I pressed the arrow that pointed up multiple times, but it was taking too long so I went for the stairs. I ran down multiple flights of steps until I reached the entrance of the apartment complex. I pushed open the heavy wooden door and took off. I probably looked like a fool, but I didn't care at that moment. The California Hospital Medical Center wasn't that far from where I lived. I kept running even though my legs protested.

Once I arrived at the hospital I went into ER. I ran straight to the receptionist. "I got called, about my parents." I told her. "Are you Hayla?" she asked me. I nodded my head. The lady stood up and stepped out from behind the desk. "Follow Me." she said ans started to walk away. I followed her as she opened doors . I heard crying, coughing and many other sounds as I traveled through the hospital. Finally we stopped walking. She motioned her hand towards a room with a curtain as a door. "I'll leave you then." she stated and walked away. I slowly walked towards the curtain. I reached out for it and grabbed it. I hesitated before I pulled the curtain back. I slowly pulled it back and stood in the doorway. Doctors and nurses surrounded two beds on wheels, performing CPR.

I leaned my head against the doorway as the doctors hand relentlessly pushed into their chests. Flashbacks ran through my head while all of this was going on.

I was asleep on the couch when I was awoken by a loud crash. I sat up, startled and I looked around. I looked into the kitchen and saw my dad, he was drunk as usual and he was throwing his empty beer bottles at the wall. "Dad, what are you doing?" I asked. I must have scared him because he jumped in his seat, smashed a bottle on the table and then threw what was left at me. I dodged the bottle, but one of the sharp edges made a deep cut up on my upper arm. Once he saw and me and registered who I was he stood up and walked right past me. "Serves you tight." he mumbled and walked into his bedroom. I stood there in silence, until he popped his head out of his room and told me to clean up the mess he made.

Another flashback I had was with my mom.

We were walking down the sidewalk, that led to our house. I was only five at the time so anything would distract me. I saw an abandoned puppy in a box. So of course I ran to it and began to pet it. and then out of no where my mom comes up behinds me and hits the back of my head, really hard. I began to cry, so she just hit me again. My mom noticed people looking at us so she scooped me up in arms and she rushed to the apartment

So as I stood there, watching them die, I was questioning the fact why I wasn't crying. Was it because I thought that they deserved to die after constantly abusing me, or was I just too shocked. Suddenly I heard a long beep, signaling that one had died. The group around my father took a step back, grief written all over their faces. The doctor that was with my father walked over to me and placed a hand on my shoulder. "We did the best we could. I'm sorry." he said and walked out of the room, the nurses following behind him.

Once they were gone I entered the room and stood in between my mom and dad. My mom was still being treated so I looked down at my dad. I found it funny that he had died smirking. I felt different, like i was about to cry, but no tears were coming out. "Do you have a steady pulse?" the doctor asked. "Yes." a nurse responded. "OK, go put her on life support, quickly." the doctor demanded. The nurses nodded their heads and wheeled my mom out of the room. I watched until they all disappeared behind a wall. I felt a hand on my shoulder and turned around. "Your mother is in a coma, and i'm not quite sure when she'll wake up from it." the doctor informed me.

I nodded my head, "Do you have people at home that can take care of you?" he asked me. I was about to say no, but then I suddenly just nodded my head. Why did I lie, it just happened. "OK." he said and left the room. I looked back down at my dad and all of the good timed that we had together ran through my mind, Like the time we went to a carnival and the zoo. Then finally one tear rolled down my cheek.
