4. The Cursed Book

When it came to Secondary School, I had completely forgotten about Sombra. He was only a mere shadow of my sad lonely memories. The first day there I was still bullied. I honestly thought that the ponies would grow up over time, considering they were nearly stallions and mares. I was preparing myself for another lot of lonely years by myself as I headed to the back of class. I sat alone as usual, and when the bell went, I just stayed in class, as I didn't feel like sitting outside alone as usual. I led my head down on the table, and sighed silently. My long flowing mane blocking out my vision from the cruel reality known as my life. I heard loud trotting constantly, and it was getting closer to the school. With that I heard a deep male voice say apolegetically "ever so sorry miss! I wasn't sure where the new school was!" I remained still, not daring to look up at who was talking. I heard the teacher say politely "no worries, I shall let you off this time, but you will need to learn your way soon". The male pony said nothing more. I continued to listen, waiting for him too leave so I could be alone once again with the teacher. But instead of leaving, I heard the loud hooves trotting loudly along the wooden floor towards me. I didn't dare look up now, as I shuddered nervously, hoping he would go away. I heard the teacher say "well I'll leave you two alone, gotta go check on the others outside". I became even more nervous, knowing I was alone with a stranger.

"Jessica? Is that really you?!" I heard the deep voice say to me. I remained facing the table, too scared to look up. I didn't want to be bullied right now. "Jessica, it's me, Sombra!" With that I shot up like a firework of excitement. I shouted uncontrollably "oh my gosh, I can't beleive it's you!" With that I threw myself across the table, and into his arms. He was so shocked at my actions, that he collapsed to the floor under my weight. I soon realized what I had just done, as I scrambled off of him, and ran to hide under the nearest table in shame. I blushed a bright shade of red, as Sombra bend down to look at me. He said kindly "it's alright Jessica. I've missed you also. Please come out". I hid my face behind my hooves, and began shuddering nervously. I refused to budge, so Sombra had no choice but to come in after me. He threw his arms around me, and embraced me lovingly. My heart skipped a beat, but I hugged him back just as tight. While hugging me he said softly "now then young pony, are you going to come out from under this table, or are we going to stay under it together like old times?" I laughed nervously, but said nothing. He stopped hugging me, got out from under the table, then held a hoof out to me. "Here, I'll help you up shall I?" He said with a deep laugh. It took a while, but he was very patient with me, and so I eventually took his hoof in mine, and allowed myself to be pulled out from the comfort I felt beneath the table.

The bell rang, so I let go of his hoof, and legged it to the back of class. He slowly followed after me, and sat beside me. He smiled at me, and I smiled back. It felt like old times, and I just knew I wouldn't be lonely ever again. We spent everyday together, and he never left my side until home time. He walked me home as he did back at my first ever school. After a couple weeks of this, he always kissed me on the cheek before he left. I eventually was talking fluently to him, and no longer shy towards him. However I was still afraid of the world around me. But with him beside me, I felt like I could conqour all of my fears. We never fell out once, and I really got to know him well. I found out that his red scarf was once his fathers. His father died many years ago, and that is why he always wears the red scarf all the time. That red scarf is all he has left of his fathers. He also has a sister called Amberleaf, but she is younger than him and goes to a different school, so that explains why I've never met her. He was top in his classes due to constant studying after school. He got A's in practically everything, specially magic class. He specialized in conquoring dark magic spells, and was very good with crystals. He was obsessed with going to the Crystal Library everyday after school. I would always accompany him, even though books didn't really interest me. I was always eager for him to read to me however. But one day he got me to accompany him in sneaking into the library at midnight. We broke in through an open window, and headed straight for the restricted section. Sombra grinned eagerly at all the forbidden books within the restricted section.

One that really took his interest however was a leathary black book, tied up with a dusty bit of rope. On the front in faded gold writting it said 'A Guide To Becoming The King Of Dark Magic'. Now I knew that look Sombra had on his face all too well. It was his curious face that always got him into trouble. Sombra had always been into dark magic, so I knew he was going to read it. As Sombra went to untie the string binding the book shut, I quickly shouted "DON'T OPEN IT!" Sombra stopped for a moment, then went to untie it again after saying nothing. I whined pleading "please don't open that book! It could be dangerous! I have a bad feeling about this!" Sombra put an arm around me and said importantly "this book may contain valid information for my magic test tommorow. That's the whole reason I broke in tonight. To learn spells other young ponies do not yet know". I knew there was no talking him out of it. As I saw the string loosen and fall to the floor, a cold shiver ran up my spine. Nothing felt right about this book. The book itself may contain evil words, but the book itself felt just as evil as the stuff described within. I tried one last time to make him stop. "Please don't open that book!" Sombra gave a short laugh and said sarcastically "don't worry, it's not going to eat me!" I scrowled crossly at him, and began to back away, knowing he was about to peer inside the enchanted book. Sombra used his magic to light a candle he had brought with him and put beside the book.

As soon as he opened the book, a glowing white light streamed out from within it's pages, revealing Sombra's shadow on the ceiling. I shreaked at the sudden brightness, shielding my sensitive eyes with fright. But Sombra continued to peer into the depths of the pages, his eyes skimming quickly from side to side. It was as if I was the only one that could see the bright heavenly light, blaring onto the ceiling. Sombra would surly have been blinded by looking at such a bright light for so long. I tried to talk him away from the book. But when that didn't work, I began to use drastic measures, as I ran at him, sheilding my eyes, and tried to drag him away from the open book. It was as if he was glued to the ground. No matter how hard I tugged, he didn't even budge. He was just like the stone griffon statues outside the library. I leapt back with shock when I realized the book was floating in mid air. The book appeared to have a life of it's own. I hoped and prayed as soon as he had finished reading the book, the spell binding him would break.

I was in such a state of panic that my mind began to play tricks on me. I could have sworn Sombra's shadow was moving, even though Sombra himself could not. I watched it closely, realizing for the first time how much shadows really did scare me. Sombra's shadow appeared to now have a life of it's own. As soon as Sombra had gotten to the final sentance, he began chanting it aloud demonically, as if he were saying words backwards. While he spoke, his horn began to spark dark purple circles with a green rim. Bright purple lights flickered on the ceiling. As soon as he stopped talking, the bright light within the book burst into a massive explosion of purple, and Sombra's horn appeared to make a big bang as well. The candle beside the book blew out by itself, and as the light began to die down, I could have sworn I saw Sombra's shadow on the ceiling run out of the library. But I was so worried about Sombra who had just collapsed to the floor unconcious, that I payed no attention to the shadow. Sombra was steaming with black smoke, and scorch marks were all around him. The book had a big burn in the middle of it as well. It took me a while, but I finally managed to wake Sombra up. As he came to, he was full of rage and shock. He looked quickly behind himself, as did I, and that is when we saw a mysterious shadow of a unicorn that looked like Sombra stood in the door way. The shadow had purple light streaming out the sides of his closed eyes, and when he opened his eyes, he revealed bright green pupils. I screamed with terror as the dark shadow dissapeared into thin air.
