A/N - I wrote this a while back and haven't gone back over it in a while now. It'll have some rough batches, but I hope you enjoy anyway!

9. Monday 21st October 2013

Today Ben had some more work to do so I took that as my moment to leave. I find Max at the library exit, his back facing away from me.

“Hey.” I say.

He turns with a smile on his face and quickly shoves his phone in his pocket. It’s good to see him smiling again.

“Hey Pop,” walking forwards to receive a hug from me.

“What are you still doing here?” I ask, stepping back.

A piercing shriek comes from the girls’ toilets, which I realise is located next to him. Another wail echoes the hallway and I almost jump into Max’s arms for protection. But in a flashing second, the sound clicks in my mind. I know whose cry that is.

“Max, what have you done?” I say nervously.

“I was just being honest.” He shrugs.

I slap him on the arm, hard, before storming into the toilets.

“Mel?” I say walking up to the only locked cubicle. I knock on the door a few times and wait. “Mel, open up, it’s me. What happened?”

The sniffling behind the door slows down and I hear a click. She bursts out, hands flailing in the air. Her mascara has blackening her cheeks with a bit of sparkle from her lip gloss smudged everywhere.

“I’ll tell you what happened, Poppy! I’ll tell you! Whilst you were enjoying your little dates with Ben Marci, you’ve completely ignored that fact that me and Max have been falling apart! Whilst you are playing fun games with Ben, you’ve been forgetting about your real friends!” She paces up and down the toilets for a bit before stopping right in front of me, “He dumped me! Dumped me with no reason. And you know what makes it worse. He was smiling. SMILING! He doesn’t care about me at all.”

Before I can even react she is already stomping out of the toilets. I know Max is still standing outside because I hear her scream again before there are monstrous steps echoing towards the exit. I follow her lead and storm out, finding Max and slapping him again.

“What the hell was that? What is wrong with you? You break up with Mel with a smile on your face and with no bloody reason! Max, why would you do that?” I roar at him. Poppy the raging lunatic is not a nice site to see.

“I gave her one,” he shrugs, “I can’t help it if she doesn’t approve of it.”

“How can you be so relaxed? She’s your best friend, one of your oldest friends, go after her!”

She is not one of my oldest friends. You are my oldest friend.”

I am completely confused. He is not dragging me into any of this.

“Ok then, as your oldest friends, also best friends with Melissa, I am giving you advice to go after her. I don’t understand why you have done this! Everything is perfect between you! You guys are perfect for one another. Wipe that stupid smile off your face! MAX JUST GO!!” I throw my arms in the direction of the exit. He just stands there smiling. I feel drained. I feel like I’m trying to convince a potato to talk to me. I drop my head, feeling tears fill my eyes. I give up.

“Please, just go Max.” I whisper, looking back up at him. His smile has dropped and he nods before turning to go to the door.

I pinch myself.

Nope not a dream. Not a bloody dream.

After a while, I drag myself towards the exit.
