Summer Jackson went through Hell. She has spent the last eight years locked up away from the rest of the world, just trying desperately to fix herself. But now, on her eighteenth birthday, she's being sent to live with her sister, Skye, a stylist for the UK and Ireland's hottest boyband: One Direction. She's being given the chance to travel with them all around the world in return for working on their maintenance crew. Things are about to get very interesting for Summer ... in more ways than one.

1. Prologue

She felt like she was floating on air. Well, floating on air with her head being constantly jerked back from the force of Rosie trying to comb the tangles from her hair.

"Sorry about this, Summer," Rosie repeated, for what felt like the millionth time.

Summer shook her hair lightly, pressing her lips together. "Don't worry about it," she replied. "I should have brushed it yesterday, but I was having one of those days."

A hand squeezed her shoulder gently. "I know, sweetie." The touch was comforting and it brought tears to Summer's eyes. For the last eight years, Nurse Rosie Sutton had been her best friend during her time at the hospital. She had been the one to greet her at the entrance on her very first day, and guide her through it all. And now, she was leaving. She was happy about leaving, don't get me wrong, but the feeling was bittersweet. Sure, she would get the chance to be normal, but the hospital was all she'd known for almost a decade and the idea of entering the real world for the first time in so long was terrifying.

"What's it like out there?" Summer asked softly. "Is it different?"

"Well, there's a black President of the United States, Big Brother hasn't gotten any better, and pizza still exists," Rosie answered. Looking at the mirror, Summer could see the grin on her face. Finally, she was able to pull the now untangled black curls into a ponytail at the top of Summer's head and tie it into place. "There. You look wonderful."

She ran a trembling hand over her face. For the last two hours, she had been preened until she was barely recognizable as the girl who had woken up that morning. Her blue eyes were outlined in black, her eyelids smeared with a pale purple eyeshadow. The dark circles under her eyes were carefully covered by a concealer that blended in with her pale skin. Instead of the regulation hospital uniform of pristine white scrubs, she was dressed in a pair of black skinny jeans, a long-sleeved lilac t-shirt and purple Converse high-tops to match. The outfit was courtesy of her older sister, to whom she owed almost everything.

"Rosie, what if I can't do it?" she asked. "What if I don't make it out there?"

Rosie cupped her face in her hands. "You, sweetheart, have made incredible progress. You can do anything, do you understand me? And all of us here will be rooting for you the whole time. We're not abandoning you. You can call any time to book a session if you need to talk." And with that, she slid an arm round her shoulders and led her from the room.

Skye was standing across the hallway, a smile on her face. She didn't have any time to say a single word before the younger of the two had launched herself into her arms. "I missed you too, Sum," Skye murmured. She released her slowly. "I've signed all the paperwork. We're good to go."

Taking a deep breath, Summer stood up tall. Squared her shoulders. Forced a smile onto her face and then declared ...

"... I'm ready."
