Maggie's BOYS

"Starting over is easy.....said no one....ever!"

Follow me... as I embark on a new, crazy and utterly insane road to self-discovery as a MENTOR/HANDLER/TBD for the super group One Direction. Be there as I forge relationships with these five young men, learn who I bond with and who I don’t. Heart strings are pulled, buttons are pushed, and lines are crossed. Is this the excitement and adventure that I had in mind or am I on a journey that is destined for disaster.

11. "On your marks!"

I watch Paddy who is now doing double duty as our trainer, work Liam hard with the free-weights and the barbells. I caught myself staring as he continues with the various equipment and I do have to admit that he was looking kind of sexy, glistening with sweat, and all.

Once he had Liam on task, Paddy, I learned whose real name was Patrick turns to me and says, “Your turn, doll.” I half-heartedly laugh but I comply and try to do as I was told.

Liam is laughing and making fun of me because I was only able to do about eight reps with the ten pound weights, so Paddy switched me to five pounds instead.

With my hands on my hips and the most serious look that I could muster, I explained to Liam that I really didn’t lift anything heavier because I had heard it would make me bulky instead of toned. He just continued to laugh and make fun, calling me a weakling. I pretended to pout, and he just laughed again.

We ended our work-out by doing a session on the stationary bikes, which he continued to pick and make jokes the entire time. I was starting to feel myself become a little annoyed with his relentless teasing.

“You know, Liam,” I say in a cocky tone. “Where I may lack in strength, I gain in speed.”

“Oh really?”

“Yes, really.” I say with confidence, as I climb off my bike.

“Okay speedy, let’s see what you got.” He says as he leads us out into the hallway.

Oh this is going to be fun.

“Whatever…do you have in mind?” I say with a slight hint of arrogance in my voice.

“A race.” He announces.

“A race?”

“Yes, a race.”

“Why in the world would I want to race you, we are not kids, I don’t need to beat you in a race to prove a point.” I am so baiting him right now, and by the grin that just spread across his face, he knows it.

“Don’t you mean when I beat you?”

“Nope,” I say. “I’m pretty sure that I could kick your ass.”

“Cocky, much?” He looks at me with a raised brow.

“Nooo sir, you are confusing cockiness with confidence, and I am confident that I can beat you.” I snicker.

“Care to put your money where your mouth is, love?”

“Sure, big guy, I could use a new pair of heels.”

“Yeah, we will just see about that.”

“So…where do you want to do this?” I ask. “Is there a park, track field or somewhere else that we can do this properly?”

“No, I was thinking we could do it right here.”

“In the hallway?” I ask.

“Yeah, why not? It looks to be about 40 yards or so, that’s plenty enough room for a good old-fashioned foot race.”

“Are you two sure that you want to do this?” Paddy asks as we head towards the backside of the long corridor.

“Yes!”, “Absolutely!” We both say simultaneously.

“There’s nothing wrong with a little healthy competition between friends.” Liam declares.

“Just make sure that you remain friends when this is over.” Paddy suggests.

“Oh don’t worry, mate.” He says. “I am a great sportsman, I won’t rub her face in it too much, when I win.”

“Yeah…keep telling yourself that,” I say as I pat him on the back.

“Alright you two, just let the record show, that I thought that this was a bad idea from the start.”

“Duly noted,” Liam says. “No worries, bro, I know that it’s part of your job to think that everything we do is a bad idea.”

“So…Liam, what are the terms of this little competition of ours?” I ask as I start stretching my limbs.

“Well Maggie, I am glad that you ask that.” He says in a really bad, really fake game show announcer voice. “We will start here at this wall and the first one to that wall down there…wins.”

“What will I win?” I ask enthusiastically.

“Now if you were to by some miraculous act of God reach that wall before me, I would graciously buy you a pretty new pair of shoes.”

“Do I get to pick them out?”

“Well that doesn’t seem quite fair, what if my version of “pretty” isn’t the same as yours, and I end up with ugly shoes?”

“You will just have to trust me, love.” He says. “Besides, it really doesn’t matter because you’re not going to win anyway.”

“I just love how you are so sure of yourself, Liam Payne.”

“It’s called confidence, Maggie Kincaid.” He says mocking my earlier statement.

“Alright, Mr. Smartass, what do you get if you get to the wall first?”

“You can cook…right?”

“Um…yes.” I say glaring at him.

“Well when I am deemed the winner, you will have to make me a country style home cooked meal. Meatloaf, pot roast, pork chops or some other type of home-style meat will be fine, mashed potatoes real ones not instant and corn on the cob. Oh and maybe some fresh made rolls or bread.”

“You’re not wanting much…are you?”

“Oh, I am relatively sure that you can handle it.”

“Okay, Mr. Big Shot, you got a deal. Oh and by the way…I like red.”

“Yeah ok, I will try to remember that when I am chowing down on some country style home cooking.” He says in his best country accent as he lightly pats me on the back, causing me to laugh at his absurdity.

“Alright already, let’s do this.” I say while I continue to stretch my legs and body. “Paddy will you count us off…please?”

“Sure,” he says as he steps in front of us, holding his arms above his head.

As we take our places, I shake out my arms and do a couple of lunges before I take my position beside Liam, who is doing the same. Oh…this is going to be so good.

I look over at Liam and whisper, “By the way I was a Champion All-Star sprinter on my High School track team…all four years.”

“You little shit…”

I took off like a bullet and within seconds I was at least five yards ahead of Liam, he totally didn’t have a chance against me. I almost feel guilty for deceiving him, almost.

I can taste victory as I quickly approach the wall, when out of nowhere…Louis steps off of the elevator directly in my path.

With zero time to react I literally plow straight into him, causing both of us to hit the floor hard.

I think I was knocked out for a second or two because when I opened my eyes fully, I was staring into a gorgeous set of blue eyes, then I realized that they belonged to Louis.

“Ugh…get off me!” I cry.

“Gladly,” he says as he pushes himself up and off me.

“Oh my God, Maggie, are you okay?” Liam asks as him and Paddy each grab an elbow and help me up.

“Yeah…I…I…think so, what happened?” I say holding my wrist to my chest.

“You bull-dozed me…that is what happened!” Louis bellowed. “Oh and I’m fine by-the-way, just in case anyone was wondering.”

“She didn’t do it on purpose, mate.” Paddy said coming to my defense.

“Yeah, Louis, we were racing and you stepped in her way.”

“Oh so this is my fault now?” He cries.

“It’s no one’s fault,” I say, still holding my wrist.

“Whatever, you two shouldn’t have been racing to begin with, what are you friggen five?” He says as he walks away in a huff heading quickly down the hall.

“Ignore him Maggie, he’s had a chip on his shoulder ever since he broke up with his girlfriend. Are you sure you are okay?”

“Yeah, I’m fine.” I lied. “I just want to go back to my room.” In truth, my face, wrist, hand or both are killing me. I haven’t quite figured it out which hurts more. I think maybe my pride hurts the most. While rolling around in the floor with Louis, not only did I scuff up my face on the carpet, I somehow landed on my hand and I am pretty sure that I sprained it or something.

Once we enter the elevator I noticed Paddy’s peculiar body language and it was clearly obvious that he wanted to say something. I think Liam noticed too.

“What is it Paddy,” I ask.

“Well…this might not be the best time to bring this up…but…I told you that this was a bad idea.”

“Shut-up Paddy.” We both say together.
