Curiosity n.h

"Curiosity killed the cat" is a metaphor used to warn of the dangers of unnecessary investigation or experimentation. A less frequently-seen rejoinder to "curiosity killed the cat" is "but, satisfaction brought it back".[1]

Chapter 6

I pulled up to the corner of her driveway. I could see her silhouette pacing back and fourth in an upstairs window, making me huff.

I couldn't just barge threw the front door so I looked at my surroundings, seeing a ladder type thing attached to the house with vines growing up it. I jogged over and slowly climbed up, watching my step.

I knocked on her window, making her jump back. One hand still on her the curve in her hip and the other hand on her heart. She rushed over to the window and opened it, helping me climb in. "Niall!" She whispered.

"Hey." I smiled.

I almost fell over when a loud pounding on her bedroom door, she jumped and ran behind me. Her small hands balled the back of my sweater and her face was buried in the curve of my spine.

"Eve! Open this damn door now!"

"He's drunk." She said from behind me. Her voice was cracked and her body started to shake from behind me a little bit. Glass broke from behind the door, causing her to jump further into me and grip my sweater tighter.

I turned around, getting on my knees and cupping her face. "Don't cry." I cooed to her. My thumbs wiping the tears that flickered down onto her cheeks. "Pack a bag, we're leaving."

She shook her head. "Niall, I can't.." She looked up at the door that was still holding strong.

"What do you mean you can't?" I asked, why does she wanna stay here? "Come on, please?" I begged. I need to get her out of here.

I got up off my knees and stood in front of her, her head tilted up due to the height I had on her. "What's that?" I took her wrist into my hand and looked at both imprints that were left on both wrists. "What's that from?" I asked.

She shook her head and tears fell from her eyes again, she tugged her wrists back and hide them behind her head. "Eve, you can't stay here..." I whispered to her, my hand touching her cheek again.

Her right cheek was slightly bruised from last night, but it wasn't all that noticeable. She's covered in bruises and it hurt me to see her so beaten.

"Please come with me?" I asked again. She looked over at the rattling door and then pushed past me. She grabbed a bag and started packing clothes in it. She threw her makeup and her wallet in the front pocket and then looked at me. "We'll go out the window." I said nodding at the opened glass.

She threw her bag down after i had jumped down. "Jump, I'll catch you." I told her. She gave me a silly look but trusted that I would catch her. She jumped and slipped into my arms, we looked at each other in the close encounter we had with each other and then I let her feet touch the ground.

I nodded my head and grabbed her bag, running to my car. I opened the passenger door for her and she climbed in, I ran around the other side when I knew she was buckled in and drove off to my house.

"What was that about?" I asked, I was a bit mad that she hadn't talked almost the whole way down to my house. She just sat in the passenger seat with her knees hugged to her chest.

She looked at me, her eyes big and her lips slightly parted. She looked like she was crying, her cheeks were swelled up and red, her eyes puffy and she looked lost.

"I-" she started but closed her mouth and took both her hands to wipe her cheeks off. "I um, my dad." She said and paused.

"Yes ...." I pressed on. "It's that an everyday thing?"

She nodded her head. I slammed on the breaks, turning to look at her. "What?" I asked. "Does he like ... Hit you? Or?"

"I just go to my room." She said monotoned.

"That's not what I asked." I frowned my eyebrows at her, my left arm hanging off the steering wheel and my other holding me up. "Does your dad hit you, or abuse you in anyway?"

She looked away from me, I touched her wrist and she pulled away. I sat back in my seat, my eyes flickering toward her. She looked in pain, emotionally in pain.

Her lips rubbed together and she looked down at her hands. I put the car back in drive and headed to my house. The car ride was an eerie silence.

But I wasn't done with the questions, as soon as we got in the door and dropped her bag. She jumped around, "I didn't mean to startle you." I said with my head down.

"It's okay." She whispered. Our voices were echoing off the walls of the kitchen entrance. She looked at me with big blue-green eyes. Gasping when my husky started sniffing her leg, she smiled and bent down to let her sniff her hand.

"Cider!" I commanded, my dog looked up at me and wagged her tail, running over to me and licking my hand. "We're not done talking." I pointed at Eve and she looked away from me. I watches her walk upstairs and I hears a door open, I shook my head and walked up behind her. "Eve?" I said, knocking on the bathroom door.

"Go away." She sniffed.

"Are you crying?" I tried to giggle the door knob but it was no use. "Unlock the door please." I said, my body pressing up against it trying to get it opened.

"Why? Why do you care so much, why did you have to come and get me I was fine." She said in frustrated tone.

"Fine? Eve he was trying to knock down your bedroom door?"

"And what are you trying to do right now?" She bit back. I stared at the door in front of me. "Niall, you don't need to know my life right now." She sounded like she was trying hard to bite her tongue and tell me.

"I'm not going to say anything about it, just let me in." I tried to encourage her.

The door unlocked after minuets of trying to get her to open it. She was sat against the wall staring at nothing when I walked in, I sat in front of her. "You can tell me, I won't say anything." I whispered.

She looked at me, "what is there to tell you?" She asked harshly. "Yes Niall, my dad is a drunk, yes he gets angry, yes I'm the only one there!" Her voice raised. I kept my eyes on hers. "Yes of course he hurts me. He yells at me and tells me I'm nothing, he makes me feel so degraded and I listen to him. I act a lot thicker-skinned than I actually am, I'm crumbling and I can't tell anyone because no one believes me." She huffed, her head hanging low.

"Hey," I whispered to her. I cupped her cheek with one of my hands, letting the other set on her leg. She looked up at me, her lips swollen from crying, "you're so much more than what you give yourself credit for. He's a jackass and doesn't know what he's saying, don't even listen to anything he says. You're beautiful inside and out."

"You just met me." She says quietly.

"Yeah, I did. And I already can't get my mind off you." That sparked something in her, her eyes changed colour quickly and I could hear her heart beating threw her chest. "Come on." I said, pulling her up.

I took her downstairs and poured two glasses of milk, putting them in the microwave for ten seconds and pulling them out. I handed one to her and she looked at me, "warm milk, it's good for when you're in pain." I smiled at her.

She gulped the milk down and then looked at me, " I feel so much better."
