Chapter Thirteen

The oven dings and Angel brakes away from me. She laid in my arms for a good fifteen or so minutes, and neither of us really talked. She sits back up in her own chair and wipes away the mascara from under her eyes.

"I should probably get that." She moans, standing up.

"Let me." I jump up off my chair.

"Let you, who has no idea how to make a cake, get that?" She laughs for the first time since we started talking about Braden. "I think not." So I sit back down glad that she's found a way to cheer up, even if that way is her making fun of me.

"Can you help me put some of this stuff away?" She asks, sticking a toothpick in the cake.

"Sure." I get up and begin to gather up the ingredients.

"And can I see the frosting?" She throws the toothpick away. "I think I'm gonna have to frost this thing warm..."

"Yeah." I toss it to her and she pops the cap off as soon as it's in her hands.

"How long til your mom gets here?" I ask closing the fridge.

"Like," she leans over to check the clock, "seven minutes!" She starts moving faster, and I do the same. After I finish putting things in the fridge I jump over next to her and start to ask if she wants help.

"Here." She turns and hands me a butter knife, and it brushes past my chest.

"Tryin to take me out?" I joke.

"Sorry." She blushes a little as I grab the knife.

"I think you have a little chocolate on your face." I laugh dunking the knife in the frosting.

"Where?" She brings her hands up.

"Right... There." I swipe frosting from my knife all over the side of her face.

"Hey!" She exclaims while returning the favor.

"Okay I deserved that."

Pretty soon we are launched in an all out frosting war across the kitchen. I've taken refuge behind the island counter and Angel's across the room behind the wall that separates their entryway from the kitchen. Somewhere along the line found spoons and are now using them as a method to fling the frosting farther. I run over to the table where the frosting bucket is sitting as she comes out from behind the wall. I crouch down a little so I'm protected by the chair, aim, and fire!

"Hey!" She squeals, the frosting hitting her right in the stomach. It sticks for a second before falling off to reveal a large brown stain on her white v-neck t-shirt.

"Oh you're so dead!" She yells running up to the table, flinging chocolate at me. I try to duck but I feel the clump get stuck in my hair.

"Ha!" She giggles. I reach for the frosting and stick my spoon in, but there's none left.

"I win!" She claps setting down the spoon. I shake my head and try to get the chocolate out of my hair.

"Ow.." I moan getting only half of the clump out, along with a few strands of hair.

"Here, let my go grab some towels." She walks over to the drawers and kneels down to open them. I look at the chocolate in my hand, then up at her, then back again.

"Do-" she turns to me as I fling the frosting at her.

"Luke!" She screams. "OMG eww! Was that the stuff in your hair??" She cringes. "OMG that's so disgusting!" She grabs a towel out of the drawer and chucks it at me while I laugh.

"Eww." She wines again while wiping her face with a towel. I run mine down my face then through my hair, trying to get all the frosting out. Angel shakes her head and turns to look at the cake.

"Well, at least we frosted a quarter of it."

"Not even." I make my way over next to her.

"Did I get all the chocolate off my face?" She asks. I look up from where my gaze was at my towel and my heart speeds up. I don't think I've stood this close to her before. Her eyes are sparkling like stars, her hair is falling on her shoulders perfectly, the freckles on her nose are... Well perfect. She looks perfect in every way. She smells like a strawberry covered in chocolate, which is probably due to are little frosting war. Her lips are stained slightly with chocolate and I move closer to her, answering her question.

"You missed some," I lean in closer, and I can hear her breath stop. "Right, there." And I kiss her. It's a short kiss, nothing big, but Angel is completely taken aback. Her whole body has tensed up, and when I pull away she looks slightly mortified. I'm a little hurt by that.

"Luke! Wha-" she gets cut of by the sound of a car horn. "Shit." She murmurs quietly.

"Is that?-"

"My mom!" She exclaims. "Oh my God look at this place!" She drops the kiss, and I'm relieved. I turn and examine the kitchen, and it's pretty bad. The walls, the floor, the appliances, us, pretty much everything except the cake has frosting all over it.

"Yikes." Is all I say.

"My moms gonna kill me." She moans shaking her head. I hear the door open and close in the entryway, and then Karen's voice.

"Angel who's car?-" she rounds to corner into the kitchen and stops dead in her tracks. Her mouth falls open and Angel quickly tries to explain.

"Mom! I-"

"It was my fault Mrs. Islea." I cut her off. I'm not going put all the blame on Angel for this. "I came over to help Angel frost that cake you needed, and things got out of hand." I shake my head trying to add a little affect. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have come. I'll gladly help clean all this up." I gesture to the kitchen around me.

"Thank you, Luke is it?" I nod. "But I think Angel is going to have to do that herself."

"But!-" Angel tries to interject.

"No buts Angel!" Her mom yells a little louder. "Luke you can go." She points to the door. I turn to look back at Angel, but her mom stops me.

"Now." I quickly grab my things and head towards the door. As close it I hear Angel yelling.

"What the hell was that mom!!? You can't just yell at him like that, he's not your son! Can't you just be n-" I walk away, not wanting to hear the rest. I jump in my car and turn the key, thinking about the way Angel's lips felt against mine the whole way home.
