Chapter 6

Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.

I tried to roll over and turn off my alarm clock, but when I swatted at the spot next to me, there was nothing there. I started to open my eyes a little.

Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.

“Hey, hey, hey.” A deep voice called to me. I tried to look over at the voice, but the light in the room was too bright.

“Hey, hey, hey. Don’t do that.” The voice scolded me again, this time it was closer. I let out a small groan and stuck up my middle finger at the voice. Who the fuck thought they could speak to me like I was a fucking child?

The voice laughed at me.

“At least the fall didn’t affect you too bad, did it sweetheart? Still the same Caelynn.”

“Dammit, Liam.” I groaned.

“Good mornin’ to you, too, baby.” I shook my head to try and focus a little. The room was still bright but I was starting to make out shapes. This room wasn’t familiar to me, but I could recognize it instantly.

A hospital.

Why the fuck was I in a hospital?

“What did you do?” I snapped at him, my words slightly slurred. I tried to sit up, but then he was next to me, pushing my shoulders down gently.

“Don’t do that. Stop movin’.” He commanded softly. I glared up at his blurry figure.

“Fuck you,” I muttered, “I can do what I damn well please.”

“Ah, ah, ah,” he pressed me down against my bed when I tried to sit up again, “you can’t actually, my dear. You see, you’re in a hospital.”

“I got that.” I snapped at him, relieved I could finally see everything clearly.

“Do you know WHY you’re in a hospital?” He asked, amusement glinting in his eyes. I narrowed my eyes at him and shook my head no.

“You fell in your shower and knocked yourself out.” I looked down at the IV in my arm and back up at him. What about this situation was amusing?

“And I think I remember telling you to leave before I got in said shower.” I reminded him. A smile broke out across his broad lips.

“If I hadn’t left, I wouldn’t have found you and you would’ve died.” He whispered, that stupid smile growing even bigger.

“WHAT IS SO FUNNY?!” I shouted, pushing him away from me. He let out a small chuckle and let his eyes scan over my body.

“I saw you naked.” A blush instantly rose on my cheeks. I scoffed and crossed my arms over my chest, slightly out of embarrassment but mostly out of anger.

“What, are you twelve?”

“Just about.”

“Oh, Ms. Jacobs, you’re awake.” A nurse came bustling in and began to check my vitals. I let out a small shriek in pain when she started inspecting my head, but only because her cool fingers brushed over a specifically sore spot.

“Oi! Be careful, would ya? She ain’t a toy.” Liam snapped, coming closer to us to watch me.

“Sorry, sir.” The nurse apologized quickly. I sent Liam a glare over her head. He should’ve let the woman work, she knew what she was doing.

“Do you want me to go fetch the girl who was in here earlier?” The nurse asked when she was done. I furrowed my brow and looked over at Liam.

“Yeah, sure.” He shrugged. The nurse left and I sent a questioning glance in his direction.

“They called your emergency contact. Georgia. I let out a groan. Terrific. I love my best friend, don’t get me wrong, but I did not need her overbearing and worried disposition at the moment.

“She was NOT happy when she found me here.” He chuckled.

“Oh my god! Cae, what the fuck?” Speak of the devil…

“I’m fine, Georgia.” I reassured her.

“No, you are not fine, Caelynn. You’re in the fucking hospital.” She spat at me. She rushed over to the bed and kneeled down next to me. Instantly, her arms were around me, hugging me close to her body. I let myself hug her back.

“What the fuck were you thinking?” She scolded in my ear. I let out a small laugh and pulled back.

“What was I thinking when I fell in the shower? George- I didn’t exactly plan this.” She scowled at me and then looked over her shoulder at the lone audience member.

“I wasn’t talking about that. You know, I think we should wrap you up with that bubble shit they send packages in. You’re such a klutz.”

“Did I tell you how she almost got ran over by a bus a few days back?” Liam piped up.

“What?” Georgia’s eyes widened at me.

“It was nothing.” I tried to shrug it off.

“Yeah, because I was there.” Liam scoffed, eying me warningly. I stuck my tongue out at him when Georgia wasn’t looking.

“I was kidding before about the bubble wrap, but now I’m starting to think it’s our only option.” She snapped. With a sudden gust, Georgia was up on her feet.

“And why the hell was Daniel’s brother in your house this morning? And why were you with him a few days ago? Caelynn. What’s going on?” She snapped angrily.

“Nothing. He won’t fucking leave me alone.” I defended myself.

“Liam! Don’t fucking harass my best friend!”

“Oh c’mon, sweetheart. You love me.” Liam smiled broadly, clearly amused at Georgia’s distaste for him.

“Shut the fuck up Liam. You know the only reason I put up with you is because Daniel wants you in our fucking wedding.” She shouted. I flinched at her voice, never truly hearing my best friend yell at someone like that before. I knew she didn’t like Liam, but I could actually hear hate for him.

“Hey, Georgia, calm down. He was only teasing. He means nothing by it.” I tried to calm her.

“Cae, you don’t know him.” Georgia responded, her voice low and dark. I stared up at her in confusion for a moment. What was she talking about?

“As much as you’d like to think otherwise, sister, you don’t know me either.” Liam said to her curtly. I watched the two of them shoot dirty looks at each other for a moment before Liam turned to leave.

“I’ll let you two hang here, I gotta go take a piss.” He said, oh so politely. I rolled my eyes and watched him walk out.

“What was that about?” I questioned my best friend as soon as her soon to be brother-in-law left. She just shook her head.

“Nothing. More importantly, how are you feeling?”

“I’m fine.”

“Well, the nurse said you’ll be discharged tomorrow morning, so only one more night here.” Georgia patted my shoulder softly.

“I just want to go home.”

“I’ll send the boys over to yours later to grab some clothes, and then maybe Daniel can bring us Chinese food for dinner-”

“Wait, what?” I interrupted her, making sure I heard correctly.

“Well, I’m obviously going to stay here with you today and there is no fucking way I am eating any more hospital food.”

“No, did you just say Liam and Daniel are getting me clothes?” I hissed out. She looked at me for a moment and the patted me gently.

“Didn’t you hear the nurse say that you can’t work for three weeks, and you need to be monitored for at least a week. So, that means you will be living with Daniel and me for a week.” She informed me slowly. I stared at her in shock for a moment before I let my face twist into a scowl.

“Yeah, we’ll kick Liam out of the guest room and you can get comfy in there!” She continued on, obviously having already planned the whole thing out in her head.

“And we can have our girl’s nights in the living room just like the old-”

“Wait, Liam’s staying with you guys?” I asked incredulously. Why the fuck did my stomach flutter at the thought of living with Liam? Georgia rolled her eyes and waved me off.

“Of course he is, Daniel insisted upon it.”

“I thought Daniel and Liam don’t get along too well. I mean, they’re so different…” I trailed off, feeling like I was overstepping my boundaries. This wasn’t my family, it wasn’t my place.

“Oh no, Daniel and Liam are polar opposites, but Daniel idolizes his older brother. Liam took care of him, and Daniel said he’ll never forget that.” Georgia admitted. I could see that, through all the distaste she had for Liam, there was an undertone of respect for him too. Liam must not be as bad as I thought.

“Me ears are ringin’!” Liam announced as he came in. Daniel was close behind him.

“How are you feeling, love?” Daniel asked me politely. I’ve always loved his British accent; it was so refined and formal. I had no idea how Daniel managed to turn out the way he did while Liam spoke like some sleazebag from the British ghetto.

“Good. Great actually, so I don’t think it’s necessary for me to be monitored by you guys. I’ll just go home.” I decided, smiling as sweetly as I could. Georgia scoffed, but before she could say anything, her future brother-in-law stepped in.

“Wait up, ‘old on a second. First of all, you clearly can’t go a day without nearly killin’ yourself. Second of all, d’you know ‘ow fun it would be if we were roommates? Make a wish, because if we share a bed, you might just get lucky.” He winked. I pretended to vomit just to give him a reaction.

“No, you’re sleeping on the couch.” Georgia pushed him out of her way so she could come to me.

“Now you two go get some things for her, Cae and I are going to check out.” She shooed them away. The Payne brothers disappeared begrudgingly.

When Georgia checked me out, she came back and helped me get out of bed. I needed help walking out of the hospital, because I started getting dizzy when we were halfway out. She helped me into the car and soon enough, we pulled up in front of her familiar home.

The last time I was over, Alex pushed me over her balcony.

Oh shit.

“Alex,” I breathed out before she could turn off the engine. Georgia let out a reluctant sigh and turned to me.

“Sorry Caelynn, but we called him and he refused to come. He said you two were over.”

I should have felt bad. I should have been upset. But all I could feel was relief. Relief that I wouldn’t have to worry about him any more. Relief that I could move on. Relief that I could flirt with Liam shamelessly.

Hey, you can’t blame a girl.
