5. The Gap Year Part 1 (Ashley)

December, 2013

Eliza and Ashley were sitting at Starbucks. It was cold and they were both enjoying the hot coffees in their hands.

“I really need to apply for college.” Eliza said.

“You haven’t? Wow, I didn’t expect that from you. It’s kinda late…” Ashley looked at her, slightly astonished.

Eliza shrugged, “I know, I just haven’t had a lot of time… Where did you apply to?”

    “I didn’t.”

    “Why not?” Eliza asked.

“I’m taking a year off from school.” Ashley said, matter-of-factly.

“Really?” Eliza was interested. “What are you going to be doing?”

“I’m visiting my cousin in England.” Ashley waggled her eyebrows a little bit, giving Eliza a mischievous smile.

“Since when do you have an English cousin?”

Ashley gave her a look. “You know who my cousin is…”

Eliza thought for a moment. “Oh my God! You’re going to be spending a year with Olivier?”

Ashley nodded, excitedly. “His wife is going to be gone, so he said there would be a lot of empty space in his apartment, and that I was welcome to come and stay with him!”

“What! That’s crazy! I wish I could come with!” Eliza pouted slightly.

Ashley thought for a moment, “Why don’t you?”

Eliza was slightly taken aback, “I couldn’t…”

“Why not?” Ashley asked, expecting a damn good reason.

“I… Well… School.” Eliza said, lamely.

Ashley smirked, “Please, don’t tell me that you’d rather spend your time at school when you could be spending it with Olivier and the rest of the gunners.”

“I’ll talk to my parents.”

“Absolutely not.” Eliza’s mom said.

“Mom, you’ve barely let me say anything about it.” Eliza couldn’t believe her parents had said no so quickly.

“I know what happens to kids who skip school for a year. They love it so much that they never go back.” Her mom huffed.

“Mom. I’m going to go.” Eliza stood up for herself.

Her mom looked at her slightly surprised. “Excuse me?”

“I want to go. I’m going to go.”

“Fine. But you aren’t going to use any of our money.” Her mom shrugged.

“I don’t plan on it.” Eliza shrugged.

They looked at each other. “We will help you.” Her dad finally chimed in.

“What?” Eliza and her mom said at the same time.

“You’ve wanted to go to London for a long time. And we will help you finance it. It’s going to be a lot for hotels… But I can tell you’re passionate about it.” Her dad nodded.

“That’s the thing, you never even let me tell you about it! Ashley’s cousin is a soccer player and has a really nice apartment in the city… I wouldn’t have to pay for hotels or anything. I would just want money for food and stuff like that…” Eliza looked at her parents hopefully.

Her mom looked a bit more accepting of the idea knowing that she would have somewhere to stay.

“Her cousin is a good guy?” Her mom wondered.

“Mom, he plays soccer for a living and he has a wife and a baby.” Eliza gave her mom a look.

“We won’t pay for all of it. But we will help you.” Her dad said.

“I love you guys so much. Thank you!”

Eliza got her phone out to text Ashley:

Looks like we’re going to London

August, 2014

“I cannot believe we are really doing this.” Eliza said sitting down in one of the airport chairs. They finally got through saying goodbye to their parents and security, now they were just waiting for their flight.

“I know, I’m so excited. It’s going to be cool seeing my cousin again.” Ashley hadn’t seen him for a couple years and that was when he came to America.

“It will be cool…” Eliza waggled her eyebrows.

“He has a family!” Ashley laughed.

Eliza shrugged, “A girl can dream, can’t she?”

“There will be plenty of other players, don’t worry.” Ashley rolled her eyes.

“Oh I know. I’ll get with one of them.”

    “Confident, are we?”

    “Hell yeah.”

They both laughed, then their flight was called.

“Olivier!” Ashley exclaimed, running and giving him a hug.

    “Ashley!” He laughed.

“Sorry, I probably look and smell horrible.” Ashley said, letting go.

“No no, you both look beautiful.” He smiled charmingly. “You must be Eliza.” He stuck out his hand for her to shake it.

“It’s nice to meet you, I’m a huge fan.” Eliza smiled, and couldn’t help the blush that creeped up onto her cheeks. A moment later another man arrived.

“Laurent Koscielny!” Ashley and Eliza said at once, somewhat in awe.

“Did you not think that you were going to be meeting footballers?” Olivier gave the girls a cheeky smile. “Because you can’t act like fan girls.” He joked.

“Olivier, you know I like the attention.” Laurent smiled, his accent heavy.

Olivier took Ashley’s bag while Laurent took Eliza’s and they made their way out of the airport. The two men were speaking rapidly in French, trying to locate the car. Finally they came upon it and made their way to the flat. (Olivier’s Flat)

“Oh my god! This place is huge!” Eliza said when they walked into the door. They were on the highest floor and had a great view of London.

“It’s a nice place.” Olivier agreed. “I’m glad I won’t have to be in it alone.” He smiled at them. The two girls decided which rooms they were going to get and immediately unpacked and showered. Then it was time to hit the town.
