12. Believing In Magic Part 1 (Ashley)

Believing In Magic

May 2020, London

A couple comments:

Even though we’re like 24 and this is like in the future the team is the same. Sooo, yeah.

Also, yes, I know FIFA played a big part in the last one, but it’s staying.

(Ashley, Eliza)

“It’s… It’s…” Eliza looked around once more. “I don’t like it.”

“Ugh.” Ashley sighed. “What’s wrong with this one?”

“I really like hardwood floors.” Eliza told her.

“Fine. Let’s go to the next one. Thank you so much for your time.” Ashley told the real estate agent as the girls left the two room flat.

“I’m sorry I’m being so picky.” Eliza shrugged as they hailed a cab to go to the next home they had an appointment for.

“I don’t think I’m being picky enough. We need to find a place that’s going to be perfect for both of us…” Ashley said. “I mean we are going to be living there for a while, I hope.”

“Thanks for understanding.” Eliza smiled.

“Okay, this is the last one on the list. It’s in Islington so it’s in a perfect location. I just hope that everything else is good.” Ashley said, looking at her phone.

They arrived in front of a cute house, connected to a bunch of others down a tree lined street. “I like it so far…” Eliza said, taking in her surroundings.

A young man came out of a flat and walked up to them. “Are you… Ashley and Eliza?”

“Yes, we had an appointment for 3:30?” Ashley smiled.

“Perfect. So, how do you like the outside?”

“So far it’s really adorable.” Eliza smiled.

“Good good.” They began to walk inside. “Some key features of this flat are the hardwood floors and the balcony.” He said. “There is a tram stop .3 miles away and two tube stops that are both less than a mile away.”

“This is so pretty!” (X) Eliza exclaimed. Ashley had a relieved smile on her face.

“So, can I ask you guys some personal questions?” The man asked.

“I don’t see why not.” Ashley said.

“What made you guys come over to live in England?”

“Well, we were both offered jobs. We got our visas and now we just needed to find a place to live!” Eliza said.

“How exciting! What will you both be doing?”

“Well I’m going to be working as a sports journalist… I mean I won’t actually be on TV, but I’ll be working for the sports station.” Ashley replied.

“Wow, how about you?” He turned to Eliza.

“I’m training to be a physical therapist so I’ll be working with the local football clubs and getting practice.” Eliza nodded.

“Well, that’s the perfect place for that… Arsenal’s real close and Tottenham is not far off either.” He said.

“We’re die hard Arsenal fans.” Ashley smiled.

“Ahh, it’s Newcastle for me, but that’s because I grew up there.” He smiled.

They continued to talk about football and about the house and neighborhood. “Ashley, I think I love it.”

She nodded.

“Well, I guess you just found yourselves a place to live.”

August 2020, London

They were all unpacked and finally moved in. The two of them settled down on their new couch. “We did it. We really did it. We’re living in London.” Eliza smiled.

“Okay. Now that we’re settled in, let’s go out.”

    “Go out?”

“Well, I mean for food, but you know what we should do?” Ashley inquired.

“What’s that?” Eliza raised an eyebrow.

“Well you know how close we are to the Emirates… Why don’t we take a look? We’ve only driven by it, never actually gone up to it. Besides, it’ll help you because you’re going to be starting there in a week.” Ashley said.

“Hey, no need to convince me… Let’s go.”

    (Ashley, Eliza)

The walk from their home to Emirates Stadium was short, only about 15 minutes. They looked around at their new surroundings. The two of them becoming giddier and giddier as they walked. Finally, after 15 short minutes they arrived.

“Oh. My. God.” Ashley just stared.

Eliza ran up to the giant cannons in the front. “I can’t believe we’re here! You know who’s touched this ground before!?”

“Who?” Ashley laughed, although she already knew what Eliza was going to say.

    “JACK WILSHERE!” Eliza shouted.

The two girls laughed like it was the funniest thing. Although a few people who were walking around weren’t so happy, believing that Eliza had seen Jack Wilshere instead of just shouting his name.

“Let’s go inside.” Ashley said, dragging Eliza away by the arm.

They were let in, even though the Premier League didn’t start for another six days. “This is amazing!” Ashley said. They went into one of the gift shops and looked around.

“Should I buy a jersey?” Eliza asked, looking at a Wilshere one.

“What if you get free jerseys for working here!?” Ashley said, eyes widening and thinking about all the jerseys Eliza could get for her.

Eliza rolled her eyes with a smile, “Right. I don’t know that that will be happening.”

Ashley shrugged, “A girl can dream.”

The two of them looked around some more, getting excited each time they found something new. “It’s getting late, let’s go get some food.” Ashley said. Eliza agreed and they left to go and get something to eat.

They headed back towards home and they stopped at a restaurant called Bengal Spice. They walked in and immediately Ashley froze in place. Eliza kept walking until she realized Ashley was no longer with her.

“What the hell?” She turned around, “Why did you stop?”

“Holy shit.” She was looking into the restaurant. Eliza looked in the direction Ashley was looking.

“Oh my God. Is that…” Eliza’s eyes widened.

“Carl Jenkinson!” Ashley excitedly whispered.

“And I think that’s Chamberlain and Gibbs with him!” Eliza couldn’t help the smile that appeared on her face. “We need to go over there!”

“What!? Are you crazy!?” Ashley finally looked away from the Arsenal players to look at Eliza.

“I know you can’t go and talk to them, but I can. So… Let’s go.”

“We can’t just go up to them!” Ashley held Eliza’s arm. “Just… Hold on.” The two of them walked up to the hostess. “Hi, just two of us.”

“Sure.” She directed them to a table of the exact opposite of the restaurant than the boys were at.

“Errr, actually, can we sit over near the window?” Ashley asked.

“Yep.” She turned around and headed toward a table that was directly next to Carl, Kieran, and Alex.

“Thank you so much.” Eliza smiled as the woman handed them menus and walked away. The girls looked at each other, both trying not to laugh or freak out.

God say something Eliza, say something.

Should I say something? What should I say?

The girls sat there wishing they could read each others minds.

“Uhh, excuse me?” They heard a voice come from the table next to them. The girls eye widened, but they both turned to face the source.

“Uhh, yes?” Ashley forced out of her mouth, and looked to Eliza to see why she wasn’t talking, but her face was just frozen on Carl’s.

“Could we use your salt?” He asked, his face slightly reddening.  Eliza nodded as Ashley handed the salt to the next table.

FINALLY Eliza snapped out of it. “You guys play for Arsenal, right?” She asked, quickly. The words basically falling out.

The boys faces lit up. “You Arsenal fans?” Kieran asked.

The girls both nodded. “Yep.”

“And you’re American!” Alex laughed. “We love American fans! Are you guys here on holiday? Are you coming to our first game?”

“Don’t badger them too hard Alex.” Carl smiled.

“I was just wondering…” Alex shrugged.

“Actually no, we just moved here.” Ashley said.

“And in answer to your other question yes and no. She’ll be watching the game at home, but I’m going to be training there.” Eliza told them.

“What?” Kieran asked, they all had confused looks on their faces.

“Yeah, I’m training to become a physical trainer and I’m working with your trainers.” Eliza smiled.

“So this wont be the last time we see you?” Carl looked to her.

She laughed, “I suppose not.”

    “Good.” He smiled.

“I’m Eliza, by the way, and this is Ashley.”

“Well it’s very nice to meet you both and we look forward to seeing you both again.” Alex smiled. They both went back to their own and shortly after, the boys were paying and leaving.

“Bye you guys!” Kieran smiled and waved. The girls did the same.

“What are the fucking chances.” Ashley shook her head slowly, still amazed.

Eliza arrived to her first day of work that next Saturday. She wasn’t actually going to do anything, but she was going to observe what was going on and what she would need to be doing.

“We are going to check their physical conditions first.” Her boss told her. They were sitting in a little doctors office room in the stadium. “The boys will come in one by one and we’ll just do routine physical stuff to make sure they are in proper shape to play today.”

“Oh my God, this is so exhilarating.” Eliza said, feeling her heart pound in her chest.

“I understand, but you must try to remain calm.” The woman smiled.

“Of course.”

“We’ll go in numerical order so the first one should be Szczesny. Any minute now, but he’s always late.” The woman laughed.

A minute passed and the door opened. In walked the tall, lean figure of Wojciech Szczesny. Oh my God Ashley would be so jealous right now. “You know the drill Woj.” Her boss said.

“But I’m shy around new people.” He winked at Eliza. “I’m Wojciech.” He extended his arm to shake her hand.

“Alright, now that we know each other.” He pulled off his shirt and sat down on the bench. The doctor went through her routine and he was quickly out the door. Eliza cleaned the bench and got everything set up for #3, Sagna. It was the same routine, introductions, shirt off, leave, clean. This went on for the next players, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Koscielny, Rosicky, Arteta, and Podolski - who Eliza had a hard time not fangirling around.

Wait, who’s number 10? Oh, wait. Oh my God. Number 10. Holy fu-

Her thoughts were cut off when the door opened to reveal him. Jack Wilshere. “Hello Jack, how are you feeling today?” Her boss asked.

“Good.” He said. He looked at Eliza curiously, but didn’t ask who she was. He pulled off his shirt and Eliza was sure everyone in the room could hear how loud her heart beat was. The doctor checked him out, he put his shirt back on and was about to head out the door. “Wait!” Eliza called. “Can I have your autograph!?”

He smiled, “Sure!” The doctor handed Eliza a small piece of paper. “Are you the new physical therapist?”

    “Well, I’m training…” Eliza smiled.

“That’s exciting. I’ll be able to see you again.” He handed her the piece of paper, she didn’t break eye contact to look at the paper as she stuffed it into her back pocket.

She nodded and said goodbye as he left. The boys continued to come and go. Soon, number 16 entered the room.

“Hey, err, Aaron… Can I ask something sort of weird?” Eliza asked, face burning red. He pulled his shirt back on.

    “What’s that?”

“Can I get a video of you for my friend? She’s watching the game at our flat tonight.” Eliza said.

    “Of course.” He smiled.

Right before the game started Ashley received a text from Eliza. It looked like a video of Aaron Ramsey.

“What the fuck did she do.” Ashley said aloud.

    She pressed play.

“Hi Ashley! I just wanted to say welcome to London! Eliza’s told me that you’re a fan and that you’re going to be watching the game tonight. I’ll try to score a goal for you!” Then the video ended.

“OH MY GOD!” Ashley screamed. She immediately called Eliza.

“Hello?” Eliza answered, her voice had a mischievous tone to it.

“ELIZA I HATE AND LOVE YOU AT THE SAME TIME. I’M SO GOING TO GET YOU BACK FOR THIS.” Ashley shouted into the phone. She couldn’t help but continue to smile.

“Sure sure sure… You love me…” Eliza smiled.

“Shut up. Enjoy the damn game.” Ashley said, laughing and hanging up the phone. The game was a good start to the season, Arsenal winning 2-1 against Liverpool with goals scored by Giroud and Ramsey.

Eliza: He scored a goal for you! *wink face emoji*

Ashley: *crying emoji* *sly face emoji*

Eliza got home rather late that night, but Ashley was still awake. “How was it?” Ashley asked when Eliza came into the door.

“It was so much fun. I love it.” Eliza smiled. Then she remembered something. “Oh yeah! And I got Jack Wilshere’s autograph!” Eliza handed Ashley the small piece of paper in the pocket.

Ashley’s eyes widened as she looked at the paper. “Holy shit!”

    “I know, pretty impressive, right?”

“Eliza, did you even look at this?” Ashley asked.

“Well… No not exactly, why?” Ashley handed her the paper. “HOLY SHIT.” On it were a set of numbers. Jack Wilshere’s phone number.

“He must like you!” Ashley said, “Why else would he have given you that!”

Eliza’s world was spinning. “I have Jack Wilshere’s phone number.”
