Love and War

Bonnie can't help but think life would be so much easier if she didn't have to make choices. If she didn't have to choose between family or a future. If she didn't have to choose between Eli or Alfie. If she didn't have to choose between success or loyalty. If she didn't have to choose between one kind of love of the other.

27. Twenty seven

"When will Eli be here?" my father asks, excitedly.

You'd think that my parents would be very business about meeting a future husband as their views on marriage are very businesslike but I think they do care about liking the man as well and making sure that he'll make me happy. My father loves to talk business with men and my mother likes to... well, mother them.

"Eight o'clock father, like you suggested."

At exactly eight o'clock, there's a knock at the door and Sophie brings Eli in, giving me a knowing smile. She's so secretive that I'd forgotten I'd even told her. I'm so thankful for that though. I stand up and walk over to him, kissing his cheek. He smiles, placing his hand around my waist. Although we're acting loving, I know this part is just an act. Just to seem proper.

He lets go of me and walks over to my father, shaking his hand.

"Hello sir, it's good to meet you. I'm Eli Whitlock." he nods, smiling his charming smile but in a more professional way. My father practically beams.

"Hello, Mr Whitlock." he shakes his hand back. "It's good to meet you too, I'm so glad you could join us."

My mother wanders over to Eli and pulls him into a polite embrace and smiles fondly at him. Almost the way she smiles at Alfie but not quite. Not yet. They both tell each other how nice it is to meet each other and such things and we sit down to dinner.

"So, Eli." my father says. "Bonnie tells me you're a businessman."

My stomach clenches. Eli and I didn't talk about what he'd say for this. But he blows me away, really. He speaks about this false business like it's really the truth and my parents seem so impressed. I can't help but feel my heart flutter a little. This is working.

"Less of the work stuff." my mother cuts in."How did the two of you meet?"

"Do you want to tell this story?" Eli smiles at me.

I nod, smiling. "He works alongside Alfred, mother. He thought that Eli and I would go well together and once Alfred heard about what happened with that dreaded Stephen, he introduced the two of us straight away."

She smiles fondly. "Oh, how sweet."

The night goes well and they suspect nothing. Once Eli has gone home, we all go to bed. I slide into my bed, smiling. I know that something is probably going to go wrong along the way but right now, this is all okay and you never know, it might stay that way.

"I can't believe you're doing this." Ebony hisses.

"That's your problem, not mine." I whisper and go to sleep before she can reply.
