Love and War

Bonnie can't help but think life would be so much easier if she didn't have to make choices. If she didn't have to choose between family or a future. If she didn't have to choose between Eli or Alfie. If she didn't have to choose between success or loyalty. If she didn't have to choose between one kind of love of the other.

16. Sixteen

Alfie follows me inside which is a little bit disappointing seeing as I was trying to storm off dramatically.

"What are you doing here?" I hiss. "If you dare tell my parents-"

"Oh, I'm not going to tell your parents, Bonnie." he snaps. "I'm not interested in getting you in trouble, I'm interested in keeping you safe."

"From what?" I demand. "I don't know what danger you think I'm in just because I'm doing something a little reckless."

"Just trust me!" I say, frustrated. "Why don't you trust me? Because I'm a little naive? Because I'm a girl?"

He sighs, exasperated. "No, it's just-"

"You don't trust me because I'm not letting you look after me this time."

"Bonnie, that's not it."

"Alfie, the only person you don't trust here is Eli!" I exclaim. "And you have no reason not to trust him. Are you really becoming our parents? Are you becoming the type of person who assumes things about a person because of how much money they have?"

He looks at me, his eyes glistening. He opens his mouth and then shuts it, shaking his head. I sigh.

"Exactly." I look at him. "So please just let me be happy."

He goes to object but sighs. "Okay. I will."

"You will?" I ask, hopefully.

He nods. "But don't expect me to be happy about it."

I nod. "Will you help me with something then?"

He shrugs.

"I am going to sneak out to see Eli tonight. I don't want to walk at night by myself. Will you come with me?"

He shakes his head. "I trust you. You're not just some naive little girl. You'll be fine by yourself."

And he turns and walks away.
